RELIEF CARVING

with Scott Phillips of PBS’ The American WoodshopSaturday / FREEOur relationship with Scott Phillips began 32 years ago when, as a forestry student, he came for a tour of our sawmill. Scott remembers that day very well, “I thought, man, this is heaven…because you sold these wonderful woods. And what’s been neat for me, is to see you grow. I got to see Johnson’s Workbench, your retail division, at its very beginning.” Scott will be onsite Saturday, September 10th for a full day of sharing his vast woodworking experiences and tips.

Scott will highlight new tools now avail-able, their benefi ts and applications.

Keeping your tools sharp is critical for faster, safer, and more accurate wood-working. Scott will cover the latest sharp-ening systems available.

Band saws play a signifi cant role in woodworking. So when they decide to be fi nicky and act up, it can have quite an impact on your progress. Scott will discuss how to identify the cause of the problem and solutions to get you quickly back on track with your project.

Resawing may look easy, but there are some problems inherant with the task. Knowing the challenges you may face when slicing a thicker board to acheive a thinner board will make the machining go much smoother for you.

Scott will give a how-to on turning a round box on the lathe demonstrating the proper tools to use.

Scott will cover the various moulding tips avalible, their benefi ts and applications.

”LL Johnson has a new source of the same Shorea Meranti from islands just south of the Philippines...Russ Arrand and I traveled there yesterday to look over this same specie wood from Malaysia. It looks great and we both bought some 6/4 and 8/4. They have more on hand and can get more if the demand is there. I believe that color and grain-wise, this is the closest I've ever seen to what Chris-Craft used, at least pre-war!” -- Don Danenberg

HARDWOOD PLYWOOD

Our European Birch Plywood is produced by a quality controlled process using a superior glue bond coupled with a multi-ply design, giving the plywood superior strength, rigidity and di-mensional stability. The foreign grading system uses alpha des-ignations to refer to the quality of the plywood (B(S), BB, CP, L, and C) with B(S) being the best. The first set of letters refers to the face. The second set refers to the back.

Cumaru (Brazillian Teak) is known especially for its superior hardness and durability and adapts extremely well in residential or commercial ap-plications. Its color ranges between a tan brown to a reddish brown with some boards displaying black striping. Cumaru’s color changes little from its original tone and gradually mutes to a uniform color over time. Cumaru naturally weathers to a beautiful, silver-gray patina. To maintain this rich tone, apply a UV inhibitor like Penofi n. Applica-tion of sealers is optional. Rated 25 years against decay and insect damage with applications having longevity of over 50 years.

CUMARU (BRAZILLIAN TEAK)

Rustic charm at its best. Widely used by hom-eowners and builders, this category of knotty decking combines the high manufacturing stan-dards required for deckboards with a hole-free knotty appearance.

WESTERN RED CEDAR Knotty

Ip’e has also been rigorously tested and found to be highly resistant to fi re.”

IPE’ (E-pay)
