PHILIP E. HECKERLING
The late Philip E. Heckerling was a member of the faculty of Miami Law, where
he taught from 1963 until his death in 1983. A professional to the core, Professor
Heckerling was an active member of the Florida Bar Association, the American
Bar Association, the American College of Probate Counsel, and the American
Law Institute. From his early years in trust work, he was a man with a passion for
improving the technical competence of estate planners. In pursuit of his goal, he
created the Heckerling Institute in 1967 as a place for experts to gather and refine
their skills. He nurtured it through the years of its phenomenal growth to its position
as the largest and most respected continuing education program for estate
planners. That passion led him to also establish the nation’s only graduate program
in estate planning, which is named in his honor and continues today at Miami Law.
The faculty of the Heckerling Graduate Program in Estate Planning is
unparalleled in graduate level legal education. The estate planning Bar
in South Florida is home to many of the nation’s leading estate planning
practitioners. The Graduate Program is able to include these local
experts on its adjunct faculty to teach the fall semester core courses.
The concentrated week-long modules in the spring semester provide
the opportunity to include not only local specialists, but also preeminent
estate planning experts from around the nation on the program’s
faculty.

The Heckerling Graduate Program in Estate Planning is a two semester, full-
time program of graduate study. The comprehensive coverage of estate
planning topics offered by its curriculum is unavailable elsewhere. The
program explores the areas necessary to the development of a competent
estate planner, including the applicable income and wealth transfer tax
laws, planning strategies, fiduciary administration, drafting, and ethics.
The program begins with a traditional 14-week fall semester of course
work covering core conceptual topics that provide the foundation for
the specialized planning courses offered in the spring semester. The spring
semester consists of a series of one-week, one credit modular courses
that integrate or build on the core courses. The modular format allows
students to concentrate fully on the particular subject matter covered
each week, and is ideal for an integrated curriculum covering a series
of discrete topics. In addition, the format makes it possible to attract a
faculty of nationally recognized estate planning authorities who visit the
school for the one-week period of their course.

FAQ
WHAT DISTINGUISHES THE HECKERLING GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ESTATE PLANNING FROM TRADITIONAL GRADUATE TAX PROGRAMS? The program is distinguished by the breadth and depth of its
coverage of both the tax and non-tax aspects of individual and
estate planning. While graduate tax programs may offer a cluster
of survey courses on estate planning topics, they cannot match
the in-depth, practical focus of our spring semester classes. More
importantly, the courses offered in graduate tax programs do not
touch on the essential non-tax issues involved in estate planning,
including fiduciary administration, asset protection, life insurance,
investment planning, elder law, and probate. Finally, the Heckerling
Graduate Program provides students with hands-on practical
experience, through preparing and drafting an estate plan under the
direct supervision of a practicing estate planning attorney.
WHY IS THIS A GOOD TIME TO BEGIN A CAREER IN ESTATE PLANNING? Despite the recent economic downturn, the aging of the
baby boomer generation has set the stage for the largest
intergenerational wealth transfer in history. Estate planning
professionals are needed not only to deal with the tax implications
of these wealth transfers, but also with the related non-tax,
investment and business succession planning issues. The Heckerling
Graduate Program is ideally positioned to meet this growing need
for trained estate planning professionals.
DOES MIAMI LAW PROVIDE JOB SEARCH ASSISTANCE TO ITS ESTATE PLANNING GRADUATE STUDENTS?Our Career Development Office maintains a full-time advisor to
assist LL.M. students with their job searches, including résumé review,
mock interviews, and individual counseling. Our students enjoy
a variety of opportunities to meet and network with local estate
planning attorneys through local bar association meetings, alumni
events, and the Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning.
