We are pleased to report on a remarkable year at the Lloyd Center for the

Environment.

In 2014 our program-providing departments worked diligently in the local

communities and beyond. The Research Department worked to monitor

threatened and endangered species throughout the Commonwealth and many

of the New England states. The Education Department provided programs

to over 10,000 students from 50 different public and private schools across

Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with almost half of the education programs

provided to low-income, high-need students. The Outreach Department

engaged with over 2,000 community members through programs and events.

Our member-supported Dartmouth, Massachusetts Visitor Center/82-acre

preserve attracted over 25,000 visitors.

Thank you for your generous support, which makes all this possible.

2014 marks the beginning of a transformation for the Lloyd Center. Our

organization has grown into a regional hub due to the reputation of our

programs and the dedication of our staff and board. The tradition of excellence

in exceptional environmental research, education and outreach that spans

over 30 years has been well established as we head into this new phase of

growth and organizational maturity.

We are exceedingly grateful to the committed staff, talented board of directors

and dedicated volunteers who make all this possible.

The mission of the Lloyd Center is to instill a life-long respect and affection for nature in people

of all ages through research and education; to advance a scientific and public understanding of

our coastal ecosystems and the need to protect them; and to promote a legacy of natural diversity

largely in, but not restricted to, the coastal environments of southeastern New England.

The past third of a century has seen the Lloyd Center grow from a small environmental

“studies” organization to a dynamic membership-supported institution, whose

research and education services are increasingly sought by educators, government

agencies and citizens throughout New England.

Founded in 1978 and situated with its headquarters and spectacular nature preserve

overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary in Dartmouth, the Lloyd Center has

achieved a well-earned reputation for excellence in environmental research and

education. Through its innovative outreach programs, it has established itself as a

highly regarded leader in the ongoing effort to raise awareness of the area’s fragile

coastal resources and the importance of protecting them.

At its 82-acre nature preserve, comprising pristine salt marsh, maritime forest and

undisturbed wetlands, in one of the most unspoiled reaches of southeastern New

England, the Visitor Center is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday

(plus Sundays, June-September). Here, aquarium exhibits offer close-up views of live

freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine critters. The Visitor Center

is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles, many representing

endangered species, being “head-started” and readied for release back into their

natural environment. At the always-popular touch-tank, youngsters learn the hands-

on joy of socializing with gentle spider crabs, elusive minnows, sea stars, whelks,

hermit crabs, periwinkles and mussels.

Our majestic Red-shouldered Hawk continues to be our main “Raptor-in-Residence”.

Discovered permanently disabled in nearby woods, she was rescued by Lloyd Center

naturalists and nursed back to health. Although not here as an “exhibit”, this magnifi-

cent bird of prey, having been painstakingly “socialized” by members of our teaching

staff, is now being introduced to thousands of wide-eyed children, both in their class-

rooms and here at our nature preserve. To these eager learners, it has come to represent

one of the true wonders of nature.

In March of 2013, the Center received its very own Eastern Screech Owl which is

no less wild, but partially impaired due to a retinal detachment in its left eye. The

resident raptors serve as educational tools for the biodiversity concept, which stresses

the interconnectedness and importance of all species around us, both large and small.

The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth

Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office

of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”.

Through telescopes there, one can get a bird’s-eye view of formerly endangered

Ospreys, and their fledging chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members of the

Center’s research staff. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Since its founding, the Lloyd Center has focused its research activities on assessing

and documenting the distribution and ecology of the natural resources of southeastern

New England. Collaborating with Tufts University, the Lloyd Center completed its

13th year as the Buzzards Bay coordinator of the Seabird Stranding Network, docu-

menting instances of seabird mortality and live-bird activity on the western shoreline

of Buzzards Bay. Lloyd Center scientists conducted rare-species habitat assessments

in Essex County, Martha’s Vineyard, and a number of other nearby locations.

The Center also gathered baseline data for its Biodiversity Initiative, documenting

the biota of southeastern Massachusetts. In collaboration with the Education staff,

the Center’s butterfly garden was expanded and renovated as part of the Biodiversity

Initiative.

The Center continued its collaboration with Martha’s Vineyard conservation agencies

and produced rare-habitat assessments for a growing number of private landowners.

In addition to its continuing work in protecting Piping Plovers and state-threatened

species including Diamondback Terrapins on the Commonwealth’s Division of

Conservation and Recreation beaches in Bristol County, the Center completed its 29th

year of monitoring and protecting the federally-listed (“threatened”) Piping Plovers.

Research staff also participated in Biolblitzes in Rhode Island, as well as the Rhode

Island East Bay and the Massachusetts Bristol County North American Butterfly

Association’s Fourth of July Butterfly Counts.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L E D U C A T I O N

The Lloyd Center continues to provide an increasing number of unique hands-

on science programs for schoolchildren and adolescents in over 30 different New

England cities and towns, at levels ranging from kindergarten through college.

This past year, the Lloyd Center worked with over 40 elementary and middle schools

in the region, visiting a growing number of students on a regular basis to teach

interactive lessons on relevant and critically important environmental issues.

Three of the curriculum-based offerings, Feathery Focus (an ornithology program

specially created for the third-grade level) and Turn-the-Tide (a program dealing with

the ecosystems of local estuaries, taught on the fifth-grade level), as well as the new

Climate Science Learning Project have proven to be especially effective. All educa-

tion programs are designed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in

Science and Technology/Engineering and in History/Social Studies.

For children ages 5-15, the Center’s Education Department annually provides up to

15 distinct summer programs designed to help students develop a better understand-

ing of science and a deeper appreciation for the need to protect the fragile nature

of our coast. Every year, as many as 13,000 students benefit from the participation

in Lloyd Center education programs.

The Lloyd Center offers a wide variety of programs designed to engage the minds of

southeastern New England citizens of all ages, expanding their understanding of the

fragile nature of our coastal environment and the importance of working together to

protect it.

This past year over 870 people participated in popular programs, which included

canoe tours, kayak trips, birthday parties, nature walks, shore-birding expeditions,

seal-watches, whale-watches, midnight “owl-prowls”, Migratory Bird Day and Family

Fun Day events, butterfly and moth identification workshops, as well as our annual

fall rowing and paddling regatta, designed to raise awareness of the threats facing the

delicate ecosystems of local estuaries.

Five miles of rustic hiking trails, open to the public every day from dawn to dusk on

the Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve, and a broad variety of live marine

animal exhibits, complemented by programs and seminars, continue to draw a

growing number of citizens of all ages to our Visitor Center. In addition, outreach

collaboration with partnering organizations continues to prove exceptionally effective

in promoting lifestyle changes aimed at a more sustainable use of natural resources.

The Center’s unique website provides a vast amount of environmental research and

education information for those who seek it electronically.

THE ART DRIVEOn August 9 and 10, the ART drive returned to the South Coast for its 7th annual exhibit when 32 Dartmouth and Westport artists opened their studios to the public.

The ART drive places a unique emphasis on a consistent and high level of professionalism and quality and features some of the area’s most accomplished painters, ceramic artists, photographers, jewelers, and woodworkers. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the works of guest artists at several of the studios.

“The ART drive is one of the region’s premier events for serious art lovers and collectors,” said Beverly Carter, one of the Art Drive founders. The ART drive gives visitors the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of highly accomplished artists while touring unique and dramatic private studios settings along a 15-mile route in historic ‘hidden gem’ communities along Massachusetts’ South Coast.

‘Flippin’ Flounder’Following the past four years of enthusiastically received large-scaled artistic renditions of the Classic Cod, Yellow Fin Tuna, Striped Bass and Blue Fish, this year’s artists will apply their unique talents to new, colorful and imaginative depictions of the Winter Flounder, another species well-known throughout New England. The flounder were auctioned on eBay with proceeds going to the artists, artist donations to the Lloyd Center for the Environment, and the Art Drive.

In August 2014, the ART Drive returned

to the South Coast, where 36 Dartmouth

and Westport Massachusetts artists

teamed up for their seventh open studio

weekend and raised $5,591 for the Lloyd

Center for the Environment.

“The maritime beauty of the South Coast

is inspirational to the artists of this area,”

said ART Drive organizer and artist, Bev-

erly Carter. “To help protect that beauty,

the ART Drive artists donate a percentage

of their sales and proceeds from the art

auction each year to the Lloyd Center.”

This was the best year ever.”

The Lloyd Center for the Environment

is a non-profit organization that provides

educational programs on aquatic

environments and supports scenic,

public walking trails through 82 acres

of estuaries and salt marshes in South

Dartmouth, MA. “The Lloyd Center

gratefully acknowledges the generosity

and vision of the ART Drive artists whose

gift helps ensure the Center’s ability

to provide hands-on, environmental

education programs in our local schools,”

said Rachel Stronach, Executive Director,

Lloyd Center for the Environment.

The Art Drive is a yearly summer event

for art lovers and collectors to enjoy
