Born in Barcelona (1973), Lluís is one of the most demanded pianists in the spanish Blues scene. Influenced from early age by records of Jerry Lee Lewis, Roosevelt Sykes and Alan Price, Lluís little by little moves away from the classical piano studies to dedicate himself, in a self-taught way, exclusively to Rock & Roll. He shows very soon a surprising ability for Blues and Boogie Woogie. Considered a specialist and awarded with the prizes “Best catalan musician 2003” and “Artista BluesCat 2006”, Lluís has given conferences and master classes on the history of Blues and Boogie Woogie piano, being one of the few pianists in Spain able to recreate the primitive styles of this genre. Lluís is often invited at European Blues & Boogie Woogie piano festivals where he stands out for his originality and powerful performances. From his beginning, this great pianist has developed a personal touch in Blues & Boogie Woogie, creating his own compositions gathered in his records REMEMBER (Omix Records 2002), BOOGIEOLOGY (Rosazul Discos 2005) and LONELY AVENUE (Swing Alley 2006). In his Cd, BOOGIE PORTRAITS (Swing Alley 2008), Lluís recorded duets with great Blues & Boogie Woogie piano players as Carl Sonny Leyland, Barrelhouse Chuck, Mitch Woods, Bob Seeley, Mark “Mr B” Braun, Frank Muschalle ... Recently Lluís has recorded his first live Cd, 7 NIGHTS AT CENTRAL (Swing Alley 2009), during a week of concerts at Café Central in Madrid wrapped up by a unique atmosphere and a warm audience. In this cd Lluís’ trio sounds full of complicity and feeling after more than 8 years playing regularly around the world. Beyond spanish frontiers this young pianist has been invited to Cincy Blues Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA ‘07) where he shared the stage with some of the most important Blues & Boogie Woogie piano players as Axel Zwingenberger, David Maxwell, Mitch Woods, Bruce Katz,... and his performance was received with a standing ovation, other remarkable performaces are Mr B's Blues and Boogie Piano Celebration in Ann Arbor, Michigan, (USA ‘08) with Mark “Mr B” Braun & Bob Seeley, Miri Jazz Festival (Malaysia ‘06 y ‘07), Voxstock Blues Festival in Belgrade (Serbia ‘06), Boogie Woogie Festival in Beaune (France ‘07), Int. Boogie Woogie Festival in La Roquebrou (France ‘06), German Tour with Frank Muschalle & Julien Brunetaud (Germany ‘07), Int. Boogie Woogie Festival Switzerland (Lugano ’05, ‘07), Jazz au Mercure (Toulouse ‘07, ‘08), Caveau de la Huchette in Paris ’08, among others Lluís’ music can be heard in all the most emblematic clubs and festivals around Spain such as Café Central (Madrid), Black Note (Valencia), Café España (Valladolid), La Bilbaina del Jazz (Bilbao), Bel-luna Jazz Club (Barcelona), Jamboree (Barcelona), Barcelona Jazz Festival (‘07), Cerdanyola Blues Festival (‘06), Terrassa Jazz Festival (‘00, ‘01, ‘02, ‘03, ‘05), Sanlúcar Jazz

The fourth album of Lluis COLOMA, "Boogie Portrait" is once again a success. The subject of this album is the duet because the Catalan pianist plays here with some of the best boogie pianists of the moment: Bob SEELEY, Mitch WOODS, Carl Sonny LEYLAND, Mark « Mr. B » BRAUN, Barrelhouse Chuck, Frank

MUSCHALLE, Philippe LEJEUNE, Julien BRUNETAUD. We shall appreciate there particularly an excellent version of "Swanee River Boogie" in duet with the American pianist Bob SEELEY or still " Honky

Tonk Blues Bar Boogie " with the German pianist Frank MUSCHALLE. Finally, the internal notebook is illustrated by 12 drawings representing each of the

pianists! An excellent album.

This is a great disc if you like boogie woogie style piano. Lluís Coloma is a leading European blues pianist, and he has made a great cd of hot energetic accessible blues piano music. I was

exhilerated after listening to the first song here, "Coloma's boogie," but I couldn't wait

to hear more!

This may be the best recorded live piano disc you'll ever hear.

"Coloma's Boogie" starts things off at a high level, and the performances just keep

getting better.

Pick it up for a great disc of piano mastery.

BLUES ART JOURNAL

This Spanish pianist – who is also one of the prime movers behind the Barcelona Blues

Festival – has an excellent release here. He opens with a fine example of his own piano playing, and the remaining eleven titles then find him working alongside equally impressive boogie-woogie

and blues players from across Europe and America, with the styles ranging from out-and-out boogie such as the Albert Ammons styled ‘Swanee River Boogie’ with Bob Seeley to low-down

blues (try ‘School Days On My Mind’ with Barrelhouse Chuck, who also turns in an excellent vocal).

Along the way are such items as ‘CC Rider’ in duet with Carl Sonny Leyland, the New Orleans-ish

‘Red Beans’ with Mitch Woods, and the cool and hip early sixties styled ‘Stick With It’ with Philippe LeJeune. Better to listen to the whole Cd

though- every track is a gem!

BLUESPAIN

" Lonely Avenue " presents thirteen tracks which contents turn around boogie and blues, with few flirtings and incursions to jazz and other genres as

those heard in the last track " Tea at Dawn ", or funky and swing grooves of some other tunes, showing that when talent and skill are exceded at the moment of composing and playing it is possible to walk where one wants without need to lose the north. Though, certainly, the majority of the songs are fitted inside

boogie and early piano blues styles, Lluís gives a new point of view never losing neither the tradition nor the teachings of the masters and achieving fullly that classical sounds new without need of fusings or experiments of doubtful justification. In these

parameters it is where Lluís moves with more fluency and reaches his better moments; to become

convinced of it it is enough to listen " Going ' to Malaysia ", the first track of the disc or " The Spirit of the Blues ", one of the most emotive moments in the Cd, dedicated to the vocalist Loti Lewis who passed

away in Barcelona during the last May.

" Lonely Avenue " supposes a new step ahead in the path of one of the most promising musicians of the national scene and one of the most important figures of the piano blues in the same territory; who in this cd shows a more personal and intimist side than in his previous works specially in compositions as " Tea at

Dawn ". According to his own words "Being a child I was

fascinated by piano. I spent hours experimenting with its sound which transmitted me so many emotions. Thanks to it, I’ve shared unique moments in my

professional and personal experience and it keeps arousing a very deep passion in me. These Cd’s

compositions are the result of this endless path in the creation process where loneliness is the main

partner.". "Lonely Avenue" supposes an excellent reference and a one step more in this process of

experimentation and creativity. More that advisable, a luxury and one of the best Cds that 2006 has left

besides.

Here is the third album of the pianist from Barcelona. It is an orchestral album because he plays here with 4

saxophones, and a guitarist. It is about personal compositions and the 13 titles which compose this album illustrate perfectly all the subtlety and the

eclecticism of this pianist. He plays boogies, swing, and some blues with sometimes some accents more

jazzy! A very accomplished album to be absolutely

possessed.

Probably one of the Spanish musicians who are quickly evolving in the last years. Absolutely exceptional and original pianist for his way of

playing and for his development inside a really slightly frequent style among the musicians of our country. A new work where Lluís adds instruments which contributes to the unstoppable march of the train of his rhythm.

BLUES REVUE

"Spanish pianist Lluís Coloma tears up the

88s on Lonely Avenue (Swing Alley 008), his latest set of original

boogie-woogie, barrelhouse, stride, and stomp piano instrumentals.

With full saxophone section (two tenors, baritone, and alto) augmenting Coloma’s basic trio (drummer Marc

Ruiz and bassist Manolo Germán), the sound is huge, and jumping numbers

like “Goin’ to Malaysia” and “The Ball” will appeal to audiences who

have never heard of Pete Johnson or Albert Ammons, much less Jimmy

Yancey or James Booker (“Yancey Meets Booker” is among Coloma’s fanciful

compositions). Coloma is also capable of gorgeous lyrical invention, as

in “Tea at Dawn,” and moves to the Hammond B-3 for his jazzy “Slow Sunset Blues” and the title track, a staggering interpretation of the

Doc Pomus/Ray Charles classic. Highly recommended."

Lluís Coloma by Loti Lewis Linernotes CD Boogieology

"Boogieology", the new CD by Lluís Coloma, is a masterpiece of Boogie Woogie. All of its 12 tracks are beautifully arranged and performed by Lluís on piano and organ with guitar and horn section. Each musician is at the top of his game. "Boogieology" is

musically listenable, danceable and fun. Lluís Coloma proves his amazing musical coordination, track by track, again and again. By any standard

this is a great Boogie Woogie cd..

I first heard Lluís Coloma playing Boogie Woogie piano at a musica fair on Montjuïc in Barcelona,

Catalunya, back in the 90s. He was just a teenager, but even then, he was authentically great. At that

time, it had been years since I was moved emotionally by hearing music from my youth, but Lluís Coloma played real Boogie Woogie with so

much warmth and feeling; he made me so happy, I was literally moved to nostalgic tears of joy. Since then, as a Lluís Coloma fan over the years, I’ve

seen and heard him grow into a musical giant and evolve into the consummate composer and

performer he is today. Lluís Coloma plays rhythm and sounds that take me back to the old Boogie Woogie masters, but the savoir faire he brings to his music is strictly of his own invention. Lluís

Coloma is not only a great Boogie Woogie organ and piano player, he’s a great all round musician

and a kind admirable person.

Loti Lewis The contemporary urban blues women.

Barcelona, 19th January 2005

Second album of virtuoso piano player and song writer Lluís Coloma which includes a bunch of songs deeply rooted on boogie-woogie tradition with an original and personal conception that sometimes get off the original roots to concentrate into his elegant creative inner world. Coloma not only enjoys playing the great masters such as Professor Longhair (‘Crawfish Fiesta’) but on this second cd he also puts the stress on his side of joyful bright and specially very actual song-writer, which becomes evident because eleven of the twelve songs included on the cd are his own compositions. Coloma performs them with a bright original feeling and he also feels ease on Hammond B3 where he gives a more ‘groovy’ performing. Also mention the drums and double bass backing duo who do a hard professional work as well as powerful horn arrangements which give the excellent support to the good work of our good piano player, Mr. Lluis Coloma. Boogieology (Rosazul Discos 2005) brings blues from Barcelona, Spain. Lluís Coloma, unlike Philipe Aaberg and Rob Rio, always plays at least drums for accompaniment, but his pianistic vision is no less sweeping. Powerhouse performances ”Swingin’ the Boogie” and “Crazy Boogie” bump against Professor’s Longhair “Crawfish Fiesta” and “Longhair’s tribute”, wit excursions into

Latin Jazz (“Anna”) and acid jazz (the B-3 number “Jungle’s Groove”). “November’s song” takes a page from Ray Charles soul, while “A Night With Axel” pits syncopated left-hand maneuvers against a rippling

right-hand melody.

Jazzy, musically spontaneous, creative and technicallly proficient are usually what it takes to make a good recording. Such is the case

here with his trio of equally positioned players when not soloing. All instrumental which is of course

the most difficult to present, I like the CD. He adds interesting twists to the

standard boogie phases and turnarounds and does them very well. He breaks up the piano with tasty B3 sounds and keeps the album flowing and interesting.

"Shuffle in C" cooks like the good boogie it is. Then we get a dose of great piano blues in "Blues For The Night Owl" Great stuff and I love it!
