Banned Book Week
This month we celebrated Banned Book Week with visual displays throughout the library. The library staff also engaged in individual and group conversations with students about challenged and banned books and the purpose of banned book week, thereby addressing State Library Standard 8 Benchmark 1. Banned Book Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Book Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of
censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.--from the ALA website

• Taught an introduction lesson on the program Pages to Mrs. Strasburg’s
Creative Writing class for the creation of their newsletter.
• Completed the MAP testing in the library. We had minimum library traffic
during testing times; however, we did remain open for individual book
checkout and renewal.
• Began sorting and labeling fiction books into genre types. The following genre
sections have been completed: Science Fiction/Fantasy, Mystery, Realistic
Fiction, Historical Fiction, Sports, Horror/Ghosts and Graphic Novels. We
hope to complete the remaining sections by the end of October.
• Reviewed library skills that addressed State Library Standard 1--Benchmark 2,
3, 4, 5 through a library scavenger hunt. Students worked in groups of 2 or 3
to complete the scavenger hunt. As students completed the scavenger hunt,
the library staff checked student work for accuracy.
• Creation of book bundles were started with the assistance of a high school
library TA. Book bundles are 3 books that are bundled together based on a
common aspect, such as similarity in setting, cover images or character types.
