I have immense pleasure in presenting the Placement Brochure of our M.A. Criminology and M.Sc. Forensic Science students for the session 2012-13.

With the change of society from simple to complex, nature of crime has changed.

Criminals have become techno-buff and have been using latest technology to commit various crimes. Further, criminal operate in borderless world. As a result Criminal Justice System is facing formidable challenges in making our society safe.

To meet this challenge specialized and formal study of crime and criminals and use of modern scientific techniques is essentials. Our M.A. Course in Criminology has been designed to educate the students about etiology of crime, various forms of crime, criminal justice process, correctional administration, human rights, research methodology, etc. The course in Criminology is unique blend of theoretical and practical aspect Criminal Justice education. M.Sc. Forensic Science course has been designed to equip students with latest knowledge about application of Science in investigation, use of basic scientific concepts in examination of crime exhibits and professional values, concepts and ethics and truthfully present evidence in the trial court.

The theoretical inputs equip the students with conceptual knowledge along with analytical skills. Variety of field exposures are organized to supplement this theoretical knowledge. NICFS students are exposed to a large number of Conferences, Workshops, exhibits and field visits in their areas of specialization. The location of the Institute in Delhi enables us to organize talks by exceptionally qualified Guest Faculty and each one of which is among the best in the country. Being aware of the Criminal Law (both penal and procedural), in court process and working of police and law enforcement agencies, our young Alumni can be extremely helpful in protecting the interest of their employers against activities which can be criminal or other irregular transactions. It is with great confidence that I present this batch of students who are an appropriate amalgamation of passion and professionalism.

On behalf of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology and

Crime being a dynamic phenomenon, the nature of crime and criminals have changed

considerably due to advent of economic liberalization, globalization, communication revolution

etc. This has not only resulted in effecting substantial alterations in the dynamics of crime and

criminal behaviour but has brought about multiple challenges for the criminal justice system in

particular and society as a whole in general. Therefore, education and research in Criminology

and Forensic Science have become duty bound to respond to the needs of the society and the

criminal justice to face these unprecedented challenges for their existence.

Our programmes cater to emerging requirements for effective crime control and crime

investigation. The course curricula which have been revised in recent years, are culmination of

thoughts of eminent professors, scientists and practitioners in areas of Criminology and

Forensic Science. Syllabi of all the Universities teaching Criminology and Forensic Science in the

country have also been consulted before giving a final shape to our syllabi. The syllabi, thus,

evolved have maintained an excellent blend of theory and practice.

The students of 2012-2013 batch have derived the benefit of these syllabi and thereby

have been empowered with specialized skills and knowledge in areas of Human Right, Forensic

Chemistry, Forensic Biology, Ballistics and Forensic Documents. I believe that the students with

their specialized skill in combination with their strong academic background will, undoubtedly,

serve better to the organizations which will give them opportunity to serve.

MESSAGE

About the Institute

National Institute of Criminology & Forensic Science was established by the Government of

India in 1972 to promote ‘Criminology’ and ‘Forensic Science’ through education, research and

training. During over 41 years of its existence, the Institute has made significant headway in the

areas of training of officials of the Criminal Justice System. Forensic Scientists and conducting

research in applied aspects of the two subjects. Over 35,997 officers from Police, Civil

Administration, Prosecution, Judiciary, Correctional Administration, Customs, Defence and

Forensic Science Laboratories have participated in Seminars, orientation and Specialized

courses organized by the Institute in Delhi and elsewhere. Officers from foreign countries like

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Maldives, Sudan, Myanmar, Nepal,

Palestine, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Uganda and Zambia have also participated in some

of these courses. In 2003 the Institute was renamed as Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan

National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science.

The Institute started M.A./M.Sc. Courses in Criminology and Forensic Science in 2004

under affiliation with the GGSIP University and has produced brilliant alumni. Every year 6-8

students clear NET conducted by the UGC.

Located in Rohini sub city of the National Capital of Delhi, the Institute has 8 acre

campus housing administrative wing and teaching block (about 9000 sq. mtrs.). Hostel space

(2400 sq.mtrs.), several lecture theatres, Seminar rooms, Auditorium besides residential

facilities for faculty and staff. The Institute has an Instrumentation Wing and 7 laboratories

having state of the art equipment.

The Institute library has over 16000 volumes of technical books and subscribes over 42

journals (both National and International) on Criminology, Sociology, Social work, Social

anthropology, law, police, science, forensic science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, etc. The

collection of reference books, CD’s audio-visual/Video cassettes on Criminology and Forensic

Science subjects is very rich.

The Campus offer variety of sports and recreational facilities including gymnasium with

latest equipment. Carom Board, Chess, Badminton etc. for the students and trainees.

Students of M.A. Criminology have been participating in All India Criminology

Conferences organized by the Indian Society of Criminology every year. Several students of this

Institute have been awarded Gold/Silver Medal in the Conference for the presentation of best

research paper in the scientific session of the Conference where large numbers of students

from all over country have been presenting research papers. After award of degree NICFS

alumni have been appointed in various NGOs, academic bodies, Banks, Companies both within

India and abroad. Some students have also been selected in International Student Exchange

Scheme.

The students of M.Sc. (Forensic Science) have been participating in All India Forensic

Science Conferences organized by Directorate of Forensic Science Services in collaboration with

State Forensic Science Laboratories h every year. Final year students participate in these

conferences for presentation of their research papers where large number of students,

academicians, professionals, Forensic scientists assemble from all over the country for

presenting their papers.

After the award of the degree, the pass-out students are placed in the Banks, MNCs,

FSLs and CFSLs and with privately owned investigating Agencies in the country. One of the

students in the batch 2009-11 got selected for International Scholarship of Florida International

University after competing through GRE/TOFEL examination.
