The answer is simple: We need to receive those releases by our deadlines in order to share your news with the public.

Believe me, I understand the frustration when someone opens the newspaper expecting to see their item about an important club event, health fair, concert — you name it — and there is no mention whatsoever.

After all, LOCAL is the ideal vehicle to publicize such news.

We produce five monthly, zoned newspapers that are direct-mailed to 200,000 homes and businesses across the greater San Antonio area. We are filling a gap in news coverage by reporting on what others don’t — namely, neighborhood news. The response to our brand of journalism has been fantastic.

However, because we have a limited staff and our publications are planned weeks in advance, it is imperative that releases about calendar items or neighborhood happenings get to us two months before LOCAL goes to press. Even a month ahead is good, too.

Of course, I realize that not everyone planning an event is ready to release details as early as two months ahead. We will work with those folks who send us submissions really close to deadline, but I can’t guarantee the items will always get in.

If you are responsible for publicity, marketing or events in your organization, please know that we want to see your endeavor get the widest exposure possible. Too often I have to write back to folks informing them our deadline is past and I can’t help them. I would like to reverse that trend, but I need your help.

May is national Military

Appreciation Month, and it’s a good time to think about why

San Antonio’s nickname — “Military City U.S.A.” — is so appropriate.

More than three centuries ago, conquistadores arrived at the San Antonio River and established the Presidio San Antonio de Béjar as the headquarters of Spanish colonial power. The Alamo was a strategic defense post in Texas’ struggle for independence. Texas Rangers and Confederate troops came and went. In the 20th century, the U.S. military began a steady expansion here.

The first military airplane flew at Fort

Sam Houston’s parade field in 1910, and by 1950 Randolph, Kelly and Lackland were official Air Force bases. While the federal Base Realignment and Closure process shook the city with the shutdown of Kelly AFB, more change has expanded Brooke Army Medical Center and rebuilt Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, now part of the massive Joint Base San Antonio. Lackland is also the beating heart of Air Force basic training. Fifty Fridays a year, hundreds of young men and women graduate from basic to become airmen.

In April, I attended one of those graduations, along with hundreds of invited friends and family members who hailed from across the country to cheer their loved ones as they stepped into the Air Force ranks. After the ceremony, I noticed real estate agent John Thurman, a tall civilian gentleman, warmly greeting some of those visitors as they swarmed out of the parade-ground bleachers.Thurman has become a passionate proponent of civilian outreach to the rank-and-file military folks stationed here, and to those who visit town to see enlistees or do business.

As an “Honorary Commander,” an unofficial designation given to civilian volunteers who help the Air

Force (the Army calls them “Honorary Quartermasters”), Thurman wants families to know San Antonio is a friendly place, one they’ll want to enjoy while they’re here, and return to in the future. Thurman is one of many such community volunteers, from the venerable Military-Civilian Club and the Ambassadors program to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee.

It’s not just about patriotism, or warm and fuzzy feelings for the folks in the armed services. It’s also good business to appreciate visitors. One recent study indicates that military-related visits generate 2 million hotel-room stays a year. And that’s just one aspect of the enormous economic and professional impact the military has on our town.

This year, as groups and individuals around town geared up for May’s Military Appreciation Month events, headlines announced the Army is considering a $95 billion budget cut and “force reduction.” The Chamber estimated the city could lose thousands of military and civilian personnel over the next five years.

The hard fact is that these days, while the military presence is still strong here, America’s armed forces are ever-smaller and leaner, if no less proud and patriotic. In World War II, when Kelly

was in its heyday, more than 10 percent of Americans had family members in the service. Today that number has shrunk to less than 1 percent. And there’s not much that most folks can do about it but adapt.

Thurman and many other San Antonians are doing what they can to boost San Antonio’s image with the many visitors who travel here to visit or work with the military.

Just saying “thank you” to active-duty folks and veterans is another way we can all help – as many do. The nonprofit Paseo del Rio Association’s May 16 America's Armed Forces River Parade is a great time to show your support. From May 1-16, you can also donate to the group’s Yellow Ribbon Project. For a $5 donation, you can sponsor a yellow ribbon to help line the River Walk as a visible show of gratitude (see https://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/events/yellow-ribbon-project). This fall, San Antonio’s Celebrate America's Military, organized annually around Veterans Day, is another time when opportunities to say “thank you” abound.

Support for local troops needed again

It is time once more for residents of San Antonio and other area cities to

rally around the troops. With talk surfacing again about military reductions as a consequence of sequestration, local voices must be heard in Washington, D.C., to preserve the various missions at Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis.

Local leaders are not taking the possible drawbacks lying down, but more must be done. There has to be a groundswell of support to get military commanders and the politicians at the national level on board.

The loss of active-duty personnel and related services at the venerable Army post will create not a ripple effect but a virtual tidal wave that could disrupt area economies and community ties for years to come.

If the reduction happens, forecasts

call for nearly a half-billion dollars in lost revenue as a result, with the impact reaching into virtually everyone’s wallet. The auto industry, trades, services, housing stock, education and so much more could take a hit if the Army draws down its troop strength.

According to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the loss could be as much as $382 million.

Restructuring and budget restraints mandated by the federal government include a 25 percent reduction in soldiers over the next five years, according to a 2014 assessment. Experts say that equates to a possible loss of 3,949 soldiers and 1,985 civilians from Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis.

The drawdown actually creates a bigger crater in the San Antonio financial landscape once 9,008 family members are added to that 5,900-person reduction. The figure grows to nearly 15,000.

Washington needs to know San Antonio has paid its dues in terms of military-force reduction over the years — remember Kelly and Brooks air force bases?

Now is the time for the brass in the nation’s capital to listen to the voices of the Alamo City united to preserve Military City

INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Musical Bridges Around the World presents a

LOS TEJANOS The Institute of Texan Cultures is opening a new permanent exhibit delving

QUAKER SPRING FAIR A fair hosted by a coalition of humanitarian nonprofits will

IN OTHER NEWSTHE BRISCOE WESTERN ART MUSEUM recently celebrated the installation of a new, 3-ton bronze sculpture, “Coming Home to the Briscoe” by T.D. Kelsey, on the River Walk. The statue depicts a vaquero driving majestic longhorns and was designed specifically for the museum. It was delivered and lifted by a crane to its site along the River Walk entrance of the Briscoe museum.

OFFICIALS WTH THE TEXAS GENERAL LAND OFFICE AND SAN ANTONIO are teaming up to develop a master plan during the next 12 months for the Alamo and the Alamo Plaza Historic District. “This alliance is long overdue and also very encouraging for all of us who treasure the Alamo,” Land Commissioner George P. Bush said in a prepared release. “The

time for us to come together is now and I look forward to collaborating with San Antonio, also known as the Alamo City. Together we will create a strategic vision and work toward our common goal of restoring the Shrine of Texas Liberty to a site worthy of its noble roots.” Added Mayor Ivy R. Taylor, “A joint master-planning effort will maximize our ability to create a unique and authentic destination that tells the story of San Antonio and its ultimate urbanization.” The city will fund up to $1 million of the master-plan process through the 2012-17 Bond Program.

THE LAVACA NEIGHBORHOOD CAME TOGETHER RECENTLY to celebrate renovations at Labor Street Park, a part of the redevelopment of the former Victoria Courts public housing complex, now known as Victoria Commons. Located at 436 Labor St., it is just south of the HemisView Apartments. District 1 Councilman Robert Trevino served the ceremonial first pitch to officially unveil a refurbished kickball field, as well as cutting the ribbon to showcase new outdoor fitness equipment, a revitalized basketball court and other park amenities such as benches and picnic tables. Officials said the renovations and some new programs taking place at the park were funded by a

grant from the Coca-Cola Co. through the National Recreation and Park Association.

THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU HAS NAMED AREA STUDENTS winners of the fourth annual San Antonio region Laws of Life Essay Contest. Pupils in sixth through eighth grades were asked to “write from the heart” about core values, or laws of life, by which they live, according to a release. First-place winners include eighth-grader Michael Wood and seventh-grader Jack Osterhage, both of San Antonio Academy; fourth place includes seventh-grader Troy Cervantes of San Antonio Academy; and a certificate of merit went to Nikhita Pathapati, a eighth-grade student at Keystone School. Out of 435 entries, 16 finalists received invitations to a special ceremony, where they received a cash prize.

TRINITY UNIVERSITY’S ALUMNI ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZED TWO SENIORS — Mary Lea Watson and Ben Whitehead — for their service to the university and to San Antonio. The cardboard cutouts represented the thousands of children who are victims of violence. The Cardboard Kids helped raise funds for the ChildSafe program.

THE ALAMO HEIGHTS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD HAS NAMED LAURA ANCIRA as the new principal of Alamo Heights Junior School beginning this summer, said Superintendent Kevin Brown. In a message to AHISD parents, Brown said, “As you know, Mrs. Ancira has had a great career here in AHISD as well as in two other districts. She has

proven herself to be a highly successful teacher and assistant principal in AHISD for many years, and also served as a teacher in Laredo and an assistant principal in (North East Independent School District). Not only does she have the knowledge and skills needed for the job, but she has a great passion for the Junior School in particular.” She and her husband, Chendo, have two sons — David, who graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 2009, and Roberto, a third-grader at Woodridge Elementary School, officials said.

The council gave the final OK for the retail outlet during the March 23 meeting.

“Approval from the council was technically the last hurdle that it had to overcome,” said City Manager Mark Browne. “The ARB is going to review it one more time for the landscaping plan and the lighting plan, but that’s not going to be coming back to council. The council has already approved it. It’s just simply going back for

details of landscaping and lighting.” The 12,656-square-foot store will

be located at 4600 Burr Road at the corner of Broadway and will be built on land that was owned by the University of the Incarnate Word, housing the Kathleen Martin Enrollment Center.

The city granted a special-use permit to CVS that allows for the one lane drive-thru. A city code dating to 2010 prohibits drive-thrus without special city approval and under very specific conditions.

During the negotiations, city leaders and residents alike stressed the building had to match local architecture and landscaping.

“Its design is to fit in with the city’s comprehensive plan in form, shape, size and location; and all those are very important things,” said William Kiel, a member of the Planning & Zoning Commission.

The store will be located in the front of the property near Broadway, with parking in the rear. The site was made up of four separate parcels that were rezoned into a B-1 business zone, making the property part of a business district.

CVS is part of CVS Health, which operates more than 7,700 CVS pharmacy and Longs Drugs stores. The company made headlines in September 2014 with the announcement it would no longer sell tobacco products.

“The city really has had so many other things on its agenda and especially with elections (May 9) and the apartment complex on Broadway and Austin Highway, it’s kind of fallen off the radar,” Cooper said.

The topic briefly flared several months ago, when residents told Cooper the city’s lack of a ban on smoking in public places concerned them, especially since the number of Texas cities with such a prohibition continues to rise.

The matter was placed on a September council meeting agenda, but

it was pulled before the session and, since then, there has been no formal public discussion on the subject.

Cooper said the item was removed because of a lack of overwhelming interest in the topic by other elected officials and the public.

Cooper said the city has been too busy with other issues to even broach anti-smoking rules. A controversial proposal for a mixed-use midrise in the city’s center has been chief among those issues in recent months.

In addition, a variety of public places, including office complexes, churches, school buildings and businesses, as well as apartment complexes, already have their own smoking prohibitions in Alamo Heights.

The Lion & Rose Pub & Restaurant, 5148 Broadway, is the lone public gathering spot that allows smoking inside city limits.

Just down the road, The Broadway 5050 had allowed smoking until a grease fire in the kitchen forced the restaurant to shut down for a months-long remodeling project.

Upon reopening the restaurant at 5050 Broadway last year, the owners decided smoking would no longer be allowed.

No-smoking issue for now has ‘settled itself’

That event, Cooper said, has further convinced him that any consideration of a local smoking ordinance is essentially a non-issue for the time being.

“We’ve talked with lots of citizens and it seemed to me there were many people that wanted the opportunity to go smoke at a place,” Cooper said. “They really enjoy the Lion & Rose. After work, they can go there and have a cigar or cigarette.”

He added: “Then it seemed like people who didn’t want smoking went to places where they knew, in and around Alamo Heights, where smoking wasn’t allowed. After a while, it just seems like the issue sort of settled itself.”

Chris Royter, area manager for The Lion & Rose, said his company has briefly considered making the Broadway location a non-smoking one, but then wondered if any local competing business would still allow smoking.

“As you can see, it might be an advantage that we allow smoking,” Royter said. “But I would actually say, yes, I’m fine with an ordinance as long as everyone’s operating under the same rules.”

Cooper said if smoking in public becomes an issue, such as more residents requesting discussion, he and the council would consider looking into the matter.

Smokers who enjoy flavored tobacco have an option at Heights Café, a hookah lounge located at 5306 Broadway. Cooper said he figures if the city ever enacts an anti-smoking ordinance, it would exempt hookah bars, just as San Antonio’s anti-smoking ordinance does.

According to current research, nearly 80 Texas cities have enacted local smoking bans of varying degrees in public places, including San Antonio, Live Oak, Windcrest, Garden Ridge, Schertz and Boerne.

Alamo Heights’ neighboring cities of Olmos Park and Terrell Hills have no such anti-smoking ordinances.

ALAMO HEIGHTS — Developers who want to build a controversial

apartment-retail complex in the heart of town cleared another hurdle after City Council granted them a special-use permit that moves the project forward, but the plans still face scrutiny from other agencies.

council approved the special-use permit 4-1, with Councilman Bobby Hasslocher casting the lone dissenting vote. The permit had earlier been recommended by both the Architectural Review Board and the Planning & Zoning Commission.

However, the approval of the SUP doesn’t mean construction begins immediately, city officials cautioned.

“They still have to go through the floodway approval with San Antonio River Authority and (the Federal Emergency Management Agency), so that is currently the next big step and that could take months to get that done,” said City Manager Mark Browne. “The other important thing that they have to do is take their final design plan to the ARB and then bring that back to the City Council.”

The project includes the apartment complex, the retail space and underground/aboveground parking.

“The SUP was approved to allow for 150 rental apartment units, 5,100 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and associated parking,” said Argyle Managing Director John Burnham. “The SUP will also allow us to undertake an expansion and enhancement of the triangle parcel at the corner of Austin Highway

and Broadway, as well as improvements in the form of street trees, back-of-curb parking spaces and sidewalks along the entire exterior of the building.”

Burnham said the approval resulted from a collaborative process.

“This only happened because many people, including both our dedicated city staff and our citizen volunteers, spent countless hours reviewing our proposal,” he said. “The resulting modifications will allow us to create an even better project.”

Council approved the SUP with the stipulation Ellwood remained open, which previously had been proposed as a right of way to be closed as part of the sale of a parcel of land.

“Probably the biggest change from the previous presentations is that they’ve scaled the project back so that they’re going to keep Ellwood open at a width of 26 feet,” Browne said. “So, therefore, they are not going to buy quite as much of the city right of way as they initially proposed. It will leave Ellwood open.”

The city also agreed to sell five parcels of land that adjoin the .8 acre of land that the Broadway Ellwood Co. owns for the price $20 per square foot.

2) Focus on purpose. It was easier to keep putting one foot in front of the other by visualizing my purpose. Meaning renews our energy.

3) Stay on course. With limited energyand time I didn’t want to get off course, which helped me to avoid distractions and stay headed toward my destina-tion with each of my 172,000 steps.

4) Keep alert; danger and opportunity can show up at any time. So I kept aware of my surroundings and re-mained open to surprises.

to keep up with growth, the proposed project has not been without its critics.

One of those is Dr. Olive Roen, who sent an email to council members citing her concerns about traffic, flooding and drainage, road closures and environmental issues.

“From the U.S. Census Current Population Survey, Alamo Heights grew by more than 500 people between 2010 and 2013, the most recent data available, for a growth rate of over 7 percent,” said Roen in the email. “ People moved to Alamo Heights because they like it the way it is.”

Roen stressed the need for more environmentally-friendly development in the city and cited the counter proposal that Glenn Huddleston, a local property owner and developer, had made to the council to develop the property into a natural city park.

The proposal did not get support from the council.

While other living-and-retail areas in central San Antonio such as the Pearl are close to amenities including Brackenridge Park and the River Walk, “Alamo Heights has nothing, just an uncrossable intersection on either Broadway or Austin Highway,” Roen said. “There is increasing realization that people need green space for stress

relief and mental health, and thanks to Mr. Huddleston we have the opportunity to use the public land for public good.”

Other nearby cities are investing in developments that enhance quality of life, she added.

“Olmos Park is improving its public spaces with landscaping, and replacing old apartments with garden homes, much more desirable than this huge project, and which could be built on land privately owned facing Ellwood,” Roen said.

The next steps in the permitting process could last a year, Burnham said.

“Now that we have our zoning in place, we will advance the design and begin to process all permits through the San Antonio River Authority, FEMA and the city of Alamo Heights,” he added.

This is not the first time Alamo Heights has seen residents choose sides in a debate about the parcel at Broadway and Austin Highway.

In February 2014, Dallas-based Alamo Manhattan notified city officials it would not build a controversial $30 million apartment and retail complex called Alamo Gateway. Company officials said the project was not economically viable after the council requested the developer scale back its proposal. Several residents at the time voiced their opposition to the project.

San Francisco-based competitors Uber and Lyft refused to accept stricter rules from San Antonio and ceased operations April 1 in the Alamo City. However, suburban leaders recently created a coalition that paved the way for ride-hailing in their communities.

“We believe competition is a good thing,” Alamo Heights Mayor Louis Cooper said. “There are a lot of people who like taxis, but they like Uber, too, and they want both of them to

stay. We want our citizens to have a choice – and it’s shortsighted by the city of San Antonio (for it) not to allow our citizens that choice.”

Customers access ride-hailing services through smartphone apps. The companies assign those requests to local drivers, who shuttle the customers in their personal vehicles.

Windcrest became the first to take the wheel March 25, when its City Council unanimously approved an interim operating agreement with Uber.

“We look forward to Uber doing business in Windcrest – we think they are a valuable commodity for any city to have,” said Mayor Alan Baxter, who joined other area mayors in a show of solidarity during a recent news conference.

In early March, the San Antonio City Council approved new standards for ride-booking companies, requiring random driver drug testing and background checks, and tighter rules regarding vehicle inspections and insurance requirements.

However, other area leaders OK’d Uber’s current driver and vehicle standards, saying ride-hailing provides their residents with an alternative that offers enhanced safety at a cheaper cost.

In coming weeks, other communities will follow Windcrest’s lead and hop on board.

Baxter noted the city’s largest employer, Rackspace, supports Windcrest’s stance. While no agreements have yet been formalized with Lyft – which didn’t respond to requests for comment – Uber expects to soon receive similar acccords from other Bexar County cities.

City councils in Hollywood Park and Converse were scheduled to discuss and possibly approve resolutions in April.

“I am in support of free markets, competition and innovation,” Hollywood Park Mayor Chris Fails said. “I will do anything I can to allow new businesses to thrive in our town as long as they operate in a manner that is legal, ethical and safe.”

The issue revolves around freedom of choice, ride-hailing proponents said.

“Ride-sharing drives better choices,” Uber spokeswoman Debbee Hancock said. “The people of Bexar County have demanded access to a safe, reliable ride, and we applaud these mayors for working hard to provide it, making the streets of Bexar County safer for everyone.”

For months in municipalities across the nation, Uber and Lyft have battled intense lobbying from cab companies

threatened by the new competition. It continues in Texas, where both companies are spending $1 million in a lobbying effort against legislation that could strictly regulate their operations.

Uber arrived in San Antonio last spring and gained popularity following Fiesta festivities.

“When we launched last March, we never anticipated we’d spend our (first) anniversary being unable to operate in the Alamo City,” Hancock said.

Uber and Lyft hit the road when San Antonio’s new ordinance went into effect, just days after the meeting of mayors – which included those from Alamo Heights, Olmos Park and Hollywood Park – chauffeured in a new era in area ride-hailing.

Windcrest’s accord – also to be adopted elsewhere – calls for ride-hailing trips to initiate and end in Windcrest and surrounding communities as well as one-way destinations within San Antonio. Two-way travel within city limits is prohibited, but one-way trips are permissible, as long as Uber vehicles operate under permits issued by surrounding cities.

“It’s our interpretation that if any of the trips originate in Windcrest or any other city that signs the agreement, they can go freely,” Baxter said.

Converse Mayor Al Suarez lamented the end of ride-hailing programs in San Antonio, but added Converse has no ride-hailing restrictions.

“In a suburban area like Converse, with little to no taxi service, this might be another viable option for our citizens to enjoy,” Suarez said. “We are inviting both Uber and Lyft to Converse for discussion.”

“The city of Converse has traditionally been a big supporter of small business, free enterprise and,

of course, the American dream.”Schertz Mayor Michael Carpenter said:

“We currently don’t regulate in this area. Sometimes, the most business-friendly, citizen-oriented thing a municipality can do is choose not to legislate.”

San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor said she wanted ride-hailing to remain, but only if the companies followed the city’s new guidelines. She called it “sensible” for San Antonio to require background checks, vehicle inspections and random drug tests for ride-booking drivers.

Meanwhile, ride-hailing proponents cited marketplace options and safety factors.

Hancock said dozens of area business leaders and more than 13,000 riders and drivers have urged San Antonio politicos to embrace ride-hailing.

“Despite this, city officials have created a regulatory climate that makes it impossible for us to meet the high standard of service that riders from over 170 cities across the U.S. have come to expect,” she said. “By adopting these rules, San Antonio officials have eliminated thousands of jobs and a safe transportation alternative from their city.”

Ride-hailing has not been permanently driven away from San Antonio.

“Make no mistake, we are not giving up on San Antonio, and will work hard to bring Uber back,” Hancock said.

The Oxygen Room offers Intraceutical facials, or oxygen facials. The facials are a clinical treatment that involve putting hyaluronic acid into the skin, which plumps up the collagen already in the face. Guevara said she found out about Intraceuticals because she’s a huge fan of Madonna, who has used the process.

Other services include color and cuts, facials, brow and body waxing, spray tanning, Brazilian blowouts, extensions, nails and “anything and everything you

could possibly imagine,” the owner said.“Even though it’s a salon service, it’s more

than that. When you do these kind of things for yourself, you feel amazing,” Guevara said.

Also, from 2 to 5 p.m., the salon offers what it bills as a happy hour. Customers can try out almost any service for 25 minutes and $25.

The Makeup Box, Guevara’s other venture, holds makeup application classes on the third floor.

The name, menu and décor are part of a corporate re-think.

Anthony Spears, the hotel’s general manager, hopes longtime customers will be pleased with the renovation of the former Tex Sports Bar and Grill, but he also wants to attract new diners from area neighborhoods.

The soft opening took place in February and a grand-opening gala in April was very well received, he added.

“With the Asado Seafood & Grill,

not only did we want to be an amenity for our guests in the hotel, but we want to be another restaurant offering for local residents,” Spears said.

He said Asado is a new concept for Hilton properties.

“We have another Asado in Kansas City and one in California, and soon to be in Washington, D.C.,” Spears said. “Asado means roasted, grilled or broiled, and I refer to the new concept as ‘casual elegance.’”

“Everything is just melt-in-your-mouth,” he added. “The grilled salmon is served on a cedar plank with beurre blanc sauce. One of the most popular items is our tequila-cilantro shrimp. We also have chicken, lamb chops, filets, rib-eyes and some nice small bites like crispy calamari and crab fondue.”

He also wants visitors — especially locals — to take it easy in the Asado Lounge.

“Our Asado Lounge is a relaxing, cozy place where we’re hoping our local residents will come unwind after work, have a martini, visit with friends. It’s a very upscale lounge feel,” he said. “We are looking into getting a singer for Friday and Saturday nights – something soft, maybe jazz, so that people can still have conversations.”

With space to seat 120, the restaurant is large without being cavernous, Spears said. The Asado Lounge offers about 80 seats.

The Alamo Heights Little League second baseman, who dreams of one day being a major-league general manager, was chosen to be a Sports Illustrated Kid Reporter this February — one of only 15 nationwide.

During his first few months in the game, the 14-year-old has already interviewed some legendary sports figures

including his idol, Cal Ripken Jr. “I always felt I knew a lot about

sports for my age,” he said. “And I love writing about baseball.”

Brian describes himself as the shyest kid in school, but that didn’t stop him from trying to get a job with the world-famous sports magazine.

After entering the Sports Illustrated Kid Reporter essay contest twice before, he covered his bases, went straight to the source, emailed the editor and asked about the best qualities of a kid reporter. The editor remembered his previous essay entries and gave some constructive criticism.

Brian paid attention and ended up hitting it out of the park, said both his teacher and his editor. He is the very first SI Kid Reporter from San Antonio.

“I’ve never had a student who had a more mature and internal sense of responsibility,” said Junior School journalism teacher Heather Hershell. “It isn’t too often that you can call a person responsive and proactive, but Brian really is both. He works hard to meet deadlines and requirements, yet he also actively seeks out information on his own. He doesn’t shy away from re-entering a project or piece of writing until he has it right.”

His very first assignment for Sports Illustrated was to interview Spurs coach

Gregg Popovich about his 1,000th win. He also covered a Dodgers/Rangers game and spoke with baseball giants Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez, Justin Turner and Joc Pederson.

But his biggest moment by far was getting to interview The Iron Man — baseball legend Ripken.

“I was so nervous about interviewing my idol I couldn’t sleep the night before,” Brian said. “He turned out to be a great guy. He explained everything and had some great stories to tell.”

Each of the kid reporters is assigned an editor who serves as a mentor to field story pitches, help focus their ideas, go over interview questions, edit their pieces and send interview requests on their behalf.

“Brian is very enthusiastic about his position as a kid reporter and he is eager to get out in the world and interview people,” says Sports Illustrated Editor Elizabeth McGarr, who serves as Brian’s mentor. “He has a lot of ideas, and he is not afraid to tackle more sophisticated topics, such as when he wrote about the possibility of San Antonio getting a major-league franchise.”

In order to focus on his passion of writing sports with a kid-friendly spin, he began a blog several years

ago (www.sportswithbrian.com). “In the future I can see Brian blending

the longstanding principles of good journalism with new trends,” Hershell said. “He will be very successful at blending the new with the ‘tried-and-true.’ He’s definitely one to watch.”

So what’s a kid to do when he lands a writing gig with Sports Illustrated? Slowly jog around the metaphorical bases, high-fiving all his teammates? Not if you’re Brian. He is in the process of writing a book about his adventures visiting all the Major League Baseball stadiums across the United States.

“I have seen 20 of the 30 stadiums so far. I’m going to write about all the things we do on our ball park-chasing road trips,” the student said. “My book will be a mix of stories about what happens on the road and what the stadiums have to offer— who has the best service, where to get the best hot dogs, where to find the best parking and what else to do when kids are in that city.”

“Brian is a bright young man with a very positive attitude, so he can do anything he wants,” McGarr said. “As is the case with all of our kid reporters, he is finding his voice, grasping the importance of getting the facts right, and learning how to be a good storyteller — three skills that will take him far in life no matter what career he chooses.”
