Bronze sculptures of artists from the Hudson River School on display at Yellowstone’s Heritage and Research Center MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - The Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center welcomes a new art exhibit this summer season. The exhibit celebrates Hudson River School masters Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and Sanford Robinson Gifford and will be on display through September 28, 2018. The exhibit consists of bronze sculptures of the artists by Greg Wyatt as well as interpretive panels about their lives and artistic contributions. During the mid-1800s, the art movement known as the Hudson River School featured artists who painted romanti-cized views of landscapes. Moran, Bierstadt, and Gifford are considered some of the most influential artists from this movement. Initially limited to the Hudson River area, these artists later went on to embrace landscapes of the American West. The artistic works of Thomas Moran were instrumental in persuading Congress to pass the act that created Yellowstone National Park. Growing up in the Hudson River Valley, sculptor Greg Wyatt developed a style that merges realistic images with creative masses of form, space, and energy. His work appears in sculpture gardens, private collections, and muse-ums around the world. The Heritage and Research Center houses Yellowstone’s archives, museum collection, herbarium, and research li-brary. The center is located at 20 Old Yellowstone Trail South in Gardiner, Montana. Exhibits may be viewed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (excluding federal holidays) at no cost.

Yellowstone seeks comments on proposal to replace Lewis River Bridge MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – The National Park Service invites comments from the public on a pro-posal to build a replacement bridge over the Lewis River in Yellowstone National Park. The new bridge would be located directly east of the existing bridge on the park’s South Entrance Road between the South Entrance and Grant Village. In this proposal, the South Entrance Road would remain open for public travel during con-struction. This project is needed to address the deteriorating condition of the Lewis River Bridge. Constructed in 1960, a recent Federal Highway Administration Inspection Report cited problems with the bridge’s concrete surface, foundation, and railings. In addition to replacing the bridge, the proposal outlines plans to reconfigure the adja-cent Lewis River Falls parking area to reduce traffic hazards. If approved and funding is secured, construction would begin in the spring of 2019 and continue through 2020. Comments must be received by July 23, 2018. Comments may be submitted online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/lrb, by hand-delivery, or by mail. Comments will not be accepted by fax, email, or by any other means. Hand-deliver comments during business hours to: Albright Visitor Center, Attention: Lewis River Bridge EA, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 82190. Mail comments to: Compliance Office, Attention: Lewis River Bridge EA, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190. Public Comment Considerations • Bulk comments in any format submitted on behalf of others will not be accepted. • Before including your address, phone number, email, or other personal information, be aware that your en-

tire comment – including your personally identifiable information – may be made public at any time. You may ask us to withhold your personally identifiable information from public review, but we cannot guaran-tee that we will be able to do so.

An Environmental Assessment will be prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act to provide the decision-making framework to evaluate a range of alternatives to meet project objectives and evaluate potential issues and impacts to park resources and values. For more information about this proposal, visit http://parkplanning.nps.gov/lrb.

Yellowstone day ride permit program enters its second year

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - Yellowstone National Park will continue issuing free day ride permits to individuals who take stock on park trails this summer. Launched in 2017, the free permit system helps park managers understand where, when, and how many stock users visit the park. Rangers may ask to see people’s permits during rides on trails. Stock users can obtain their free permits on the park’s website, by calling the central backcountry office at (307) 344-2160, or at any of Yellowstone’s backcountry offices. Yellowstone’s stock packing regulations remain in effect:

• Overnight stock use is not allowed until July 1. Check the backcountry situation report to see what trails are open for day use.

• Stock users who plan overnight trips must obtain a backcountry permit. • Stock users must possess certification of a negative Coggins Test performed within the last 12 months for all equine

stock entering Yellowstone. Yellowstone is not limiting the number of individual stock users on trails. Traveling in Yellowstone’s backcountry with stock is an exciting way to see the park. The free day ride permits provide an opportunity for park staff to assist riders in planning safe, enjoyable, and low-impact trips.
