As Memorial Day approaches, American Legion Post 118 asks you to pause to remember and give thanks to our many heroes that never returned from the mountains of Afghanistan, the deserts of the Middle East, the jungles of Vietnam, the “Forgotten War” in Korea, the islands of the Pacific, the European continent, and many other lands. We cannot repay their sacrifice, but at the very least we can and must continue the legacy for which they died, the causes of democracy, decency, and patriotism. And while Memorial Day is intended to honor our fallen, we should not forget those who have pledged to make the same sacrifice if called upon—the young men and women still serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, the United States, and more than 130 foreign lands. Freedom is not a gift. It is an earned benefit that was paid for by the blood of our heroes. From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terrorism, the sacrifices and caliber of America’s fighting men and women have been nothing short of inspirational. Let us always remember them! Gardiner Post 118 would like to invite the community to attend our Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery on Tinker’s Hill (1/2 mile north of the high school on old Yellowstone Trail). We will honor our fallen comrades as we do each year on Memorial Day. There are 20 veterans of military service buried in our community cemetery. Yellowstone Seeks Additional Public Input on Effects to His-toric Mt. Washburn Lookout MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Yellowstone National Park seeks additional public input on poten-tial direct and indirect effects of a project involving the historic Mt. Washburn Fire Lookout. The park proposes to erect a three-sided mounting structure around the lookout. This effort, which is part of a larg-er project to improve the park’s wireless infrastruc-ture, may have ad-verse effects per Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The law requires agencies take into account effects on historic properties. The park believes the effects from most of the project to improve wireless infrastructure (in other areas) would be negligible based on visual simulations; the exception being the visual effects to Mount Wash-burn. Information on the factors park managers con-sider when they assess effects is available in 36CFR800.5. The park is seeking public comment on whether the construction of this mounting structure would cause an adverse effect to the historic fire lookout. Infor-mation on this project is available online through the Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) system. Submit comments through PEPC, by hand-delivery, or by mail. Comments will not be accepted by fax, e-mail, or by any other means. Comments must be re-ceived by midnight MDT, June 22 2017. Gardiner Chamber of Commerce Unveils New Public Restrooms Thousands of visitors from around the world who enter Yellowstone National Park through the historic North Entrance each year will be pleased to discover newly-renovated public restrooms at the Gardiner Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center in the gateway community of Gardiner, Montana. The state-of-the-art facilities will serve area visitors year-round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visitation to Yellowstone National Park continues to skyrocket, and the North Entrance gateway community is no exception. The expanded restrooms--including handicap-accessible stalls and a private Family Room--will help alleviate pressure on the facilities of the small shops and local businesses that make up Gardiner, Montana, in addition to better serving the needs of area visitors. “The public restrooms are a huge plus for our gateway community to accommodate the many visitors we re-ceive from all over the world,” says Gardiner Chamber of Commerce President Schalene Darr. “We’ve been fortunate to make it happen with grants and resort funds.” Now in completion, the renovations began in the fall of 2016 as part of the Gardiner Gateway Project--a part-nership between local, state, and federal agencies to improve and enhance infrastructure in the Gardiner com-munity. The facility upgrades were made possible by contributions from the Tourism Grant program and Big Sky Trust Fund - Montana Office of Tourism & Business Development, First Interstate Bank, Gardiner Area Resort Tax funds, Park County Community Foundation, and the partners of the Gardiner Gateway Project. A public unveiling of the facility renovations will take place on June 1, 2017 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during an Open House at the Gardiner Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, located at 216 Park Street in Gardiner, Montana. Drinks, food, and music will accompany the festivities.

Montana road crews hope to open Beartooth Pass on Friday

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Crews are scrambling to clear the snowpack on Beartooth Pass on the Montana-Wyoming border in hopes of opening the highway Friday. The Billings Gazette reports https://goo.gl/ZWojdM the Montana Department of Transportation started clear-ing the snow on U.S. Highway 212 seven weeks ago. Steve Reed, a supervisor with the transportation depart-ment, says drifts were deeper than average this year, and the snow is wet and heavy. A snowplow scrapes about 6 inches (15.2 centimeters) of snow from the top of the drift on each pass it makes. Up to 40 feet (12.2 meters) of snow buried some areas of the highway, and it could take days to reduce to a depth manageable for the giant snow blowers. Near the borderline, the pass reaches above 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) in elevation.

Springtime on the Beartooth Ranger District Red Lodge, MT – Springtime in Montana often means a mixture of dry sunny days with thunderstorms and even blizzards. Keeping these changing weather conditions while visiting your national forest can help ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Below are some things to keep in mind when recreating on public lands include… • All road openings are weather dependent. If a road is open but is still wet and muddy try to find a different

spot to explore. Roads can get easily damaged this time of year and nobody wants to get stuck. • Pick up a Motor Vehicle Use Map and Forest Visitor Map at your local Ranger Station office. Motor Ve-

hicle Use Maps can be downloaded at www.fs.usda.gov/main/custergallatin/maps-pubs and are available on the Avenza app. These maps show all the roads on the forest where vehicle travel is allowed, and have opening dates for roads that are closed seasonally.

• Remember to store safely all attractants – food storage requirements are in effect. • Rivers and streams are running really fast and high this time of year. A creek that is crossable in the morn-

ing can become impassable as temperatures rise during the day so plan ahead and take extra precautions when crossing a waterway.
