2. Summary Ministry Description:

Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that is looking to grow within and beyond our walls. We have a congregation that does have some deep divisions, but many people have been working to build bridges over that gap. We all recognize we are on a journey, and though our individual spiritual journeys will continue, we hope our collective journey will bring us to a point where the walls are just physical walls and that we go beyond them. As we continue our faith journey, we will grow our vision to become a more caring, spiritual and inclusive community, living out both the truth and intent of the Gospel. 3. 4. What we value about living in our area:

From a spiritual perspective, Trinity has been a stable and consistent home for our congregation since 1869. In some cases, people have been faithful congregants for over 60 years. We welcome new members from various backgrounds and hope that together, we can learn to walk the path that Jesus laid out for us. Home Sweet Home

As for the general geographic area, there are many attributes that result in a high quality of life.

Part-Time Minister. Churches that either choose to call a part-time minister or who cannot afford a full-time minister will need to provide a part-time compensation package. It is critical in part-time calls that churches and ministers are clear and transparent regarding ministry responsibilities and expectations. When determining compensation for part-time ministers, congregations can begin by determining what a full-time position minister’s compensation would cost and then pay the portion of that package that matches the part time level of ministry agreed upon. (See Appendix D for more information)

15. What is the expected living situation for your next minister?

• The pastor would be expected to commute for the service, office hours, homebound ministry and any other mutually agreed upon Pastoral support.

17. State any incentives:

• None

18. Describe peer and professional supports available for ministers in your association/conference:

• Our Conference offers Community of Practice (COP) groups for clergy. UCC ministerial groups are typically organized regionally. They meet monthly and are led by a trained facilitator for the purpose of collegial support and ministry skill development. They enhance clergy wellness and effectiveness immensely.

• The Conference offers scholarships for clergy continuing education. • Included in Trinity’s Pastoral expenses is the budget item “Pastor’s Misc. Expense”

which can be used for continuing education expenses at the Pastor’s discretion. 2019 budget figure is $1,400.

• In addition, there is internal support for the new Pastor from the Council, Spiritual Life

and Executive Committees.

19. If applicable, describe how your church will adopt part-time adjustments in the pastoral schedule to support a minister’s bi-vocational employment:

Page 7: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 7

• Realizing the challenges inherent in having a half time minister, Trinity will be flexible in negotiating an amicable schedule to support both the half time Minister and Trinity UCCs interests.

WHO IS GOD CALLING TO MINISTER WITH US?

20. Describe the ministry goals you envision your next minister co-collaborating with the congregation to achieve.

• Reach out to others in our community and help define what exactly our community is. • Grow as a community of faith by letting others in. • Move out of our comfort zone and think outside the box. • Develop a structured Safe Sanctuary Policy. • Ecumenical outreach to leverage Trinity’s footprint in the community. • Pastoral Care • Youth Programming • Confirmation (co-sponsored with other area congregations)

This Word Cloud takes the text from the entire Trinity Pastoral Survey document and posts all the words. The larger the text, the higher the count of that word in the initial text. It is a tool to present an overview of a document and provides some focus for the reader. 30. Describe how your vision of the minister you are now seeking will assist the congregation in making an impact beyond its walls.

The new Pastor will serve a leadership and mentoring role for the congregation. We are aware that we need support in developing and executing effective outreach programs. Community

Outreach is not referenced in our Constitution, By-Laws or Chart of Committees, so this is a wide-open opportunity for Trinity. Some of the issues that have been identified in our recent congregation retreats are:

• How do we effectively invite others to join in? • How do we identify people in need and how do we get them here? • How can we practice what we preach (walk the talk)? • How can we expand our personal boundaries as to who is welcome? • How best should we grow as a congregation? • How can we develop a spirt of Radical Hospitality for all people? • How do we engage another generation and bring younger people into church? • How do we develop a Strategic Plan for Trinity?

31. Specify language requirements or culturally-specific capacities preferred in a next ministerial leader, and why those matter to the congregation’s sense of calling.

• In order to assure clear and concise communications, we would expect that all candidates are proficient in reading, writing and speaking the English language.

• We would expect full and enthusiastic support of Trinity’s Open & Affirming policies. • No other specific cultural related capacities are specifically required.

32. Based on what you have learned about who your church is, who your church’s neighbor is, and who God is calling the church to become, describe four areas of excellence that your next minister will display to further equip the congregation’s ministry in these areas.

Trinity conducted a series of Congregational Visioning Retreats to address many questions for this profile. Here, we include items from those retreats as well as those items gleaned from Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers in the UCC.

Identified via Trinity Visioning Retreats

• Find Common Ground to help resolve tensions within the congregation. • Be open and inviting of change and new experiences. • Challenge us to think and ask questions. • Maintain a personal touch with our young members.

Identified via Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers in the UCC

• Loving God, following Jesus Christ, and being guided by the Holy Spirit; living a life of

discipleship • Exhibiting a commitment to the core values of the United Church of Christ: continuing

testament, extravagant welcome, and changing lives. • Strategically creating the future of God’s Church and Encouraging leadership

development of self and others through continuing education and lifelong learning. • Practicing self-care and life balance.

WHO IS GOD CALLING US TO BECOME?

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 NRSV)

33. Who is God calling you to become as a congregation?

• Desire for spiritual self-improvement • Strong Lay Leadership • Become role models for both our congregation and community • Be accepting in God’s Grace • Live like Christ, who broke all the rules (No rules as to who is welcome) • Be accepting (in God’s grace) • Learn and accept the changes needed to remain relevant as a faith community • Be curious rather than fearful • Be forgiving and kind • Be open to new ways of being • Contemporary services to connect with the community and younger generations • Encourage Diversity and inclusion

34. Describe how God is calling you to reach out to address the emerging challenges and opportunities of your community and congregation.

• We are a great idea Church but need to initiate and follow up better • We live by goals, but there is no leadership for goals • Need to develop strategy and long-range visioning • Teaching the congregation our common goals. • Discerning - Listening - Prayer • Committed to Open and Affirming process • Strong Lay Leadership • Strong and faithful Mission Program • Safe Sanctuary Process • Challenging Theology

Trinity UCC currently does not have a multi-year strategic plan or a vision statement, however this is something the council is trying to work with the congregation to achieve.

WHO ARE WE NOW? “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39 NRSV) CONGREGATIONAL REFLECTIONS

CONGREGATIONAL REFLECTIONS 35. Describe your congregation’s life of faith.

As we prepare to celebrate our 150th year as a continuous congregation, we are anxious to see what the future holds in store for us. We are anxious to see what the future can be and where God is calling us to go as a Community of Faith. As a congregation we have expressed a desire to:

• Grow our faith within the framework of an Open and Affirming philosophy • Experience individual Spiritual growth • Show acceptance for all God’s children • Be strong advocates and witnesses to God's work in our lives and the world • Bringing Christ's love to others

We rely on the Holy Spirit's presence in our worship. People feel free to speak out during a sermon, or play a tambourine, speak a prayer request into the community, or even to just laugh and be a bit silly.

Contemporary music with drums or other instrumentation speaks to our ministry of music and brings a spirit of joy to worship. The choir presents an opportunity for people, who enjoy singing, to joyously express the Spirit.

Non-traditional Music worship

We welcome guests into our midst with a person to serve as Greeter every Sunday and extend a warm welcome. Critical to our congregation is the “Passing of the Peace” to serve as a bonding activity for our family of faith. 36. Describe several strengths or positive qualities of your congregation.

• Outstanding Music and Choir ministry

39. Describe how your congregation is organized for ministry and mission. When it comes to decision-making, how many hours are spent in meetings per month?

● Council meetings are held once a month and roughly around two hours long (sometimes longer depending on the items and depth of discussion of the agenda items). Various committees meet each month or quarterly. The council and committees do keep minutes and those are posted, and every Sunday, announcements are done by a chair, co-chair, or liaison to a committee. The council president and/or council vice president do announcements as well.

• Communication documents and processes include: • Announcements in weekly bulletin • The Bells monthly newsletter • MailChimp e-mail distribution.

43. Describe the mix of ethnic heritages in your congregation, and the overall racial make-up. What does diversity mean in your context?

The congregation at Trinity is a fairly homogenous group with the overwhelming majority being Caucasian from various ethnic groups. From the perspective of diversity, the prime focus at Trinity is service to the LGBQT community through our Open and Affirming theology.

44. Has your congregation recently had a conversation about welcoming diversity, or do you plan to hold one on the near future (perhaps using, for example, the Welcoming Diversity Inventory)? Please note the date. Comment after the exercise:

The focus of Trinity’s diversity activities has revolved around our Open and Affirming declaration and the LGBQT community. There has been little formal outreach to people of color, but the desire to develop an effective ministry in that regard exists within the church. It is our expectation that the new Pastor would co-collaborate with the congregation to determine how we could extend this ministry.

48. Reflection: After reviewing the congregational demographics and activities above, what does this information reflect about your congregation’s overall ministry?

Approximately 75% of Trinity’s active membership is 50+ with the majority of active members participating in communion and church-wide meals or events. In order to grow the congregation and add younger families and youth we are seeking a minister who will co-collaborate with us to grow as a community of faith, move out of our comfort zone and grow the youth and young family membership. Being an Open and Affirming community and having an outstanding music and choir ministry has helped us grow and we hope to continue this trend with the strong support of our new minister. In addition to growth through the LGBTQ community we also seek to reach out to the larger community around us by sharing, teaching and bringing the biblical word to life.

• Funds are not drawn regularly, but only under specific circumstances. In the last 5 years only small amount to help with ministry training.

64. What is the percentage rate of draw (last year, compared to 5 years ago)?

• Due to the conservative philosophy governing fund use, there is no real percentage rate to compare. The fund is stable within the period indicated.

65. Describe draw on endowment, if any, to meet operating budget expenses for the most recent year and the past five years:

• Endowment funds are not used for Operating Budget expense.

66. At the current rate of draw, how long might the endowment last?

• Funds are only used in very specific instances, so there is no consistent depletion of the funds to make a comparison, The Endowment believes that the fund is sustainable for the foreseeable future.

67. Other Assets:

• Memorial Fund with a stated value of $15,000. The Memorial Fund contributed to both property enhancement, and sound and lighting equipment for the Sanctuary. This occurred over the last 2 years for a value of about $3,000.00

74. Reflection: After reviewing the church’s finances and assets described above, what does this information reflect about your congregation’s mission and ministry

• Each committee submits their expense budget in the fall by line item and total. Council Treasurer, with help of in-house bookkeeper and outside accountant, reviews their budgets (committees) for acceptability and also determines projected income from envelopes and other giving and then prepares upcoming year’s budget. Finance committee (minus council treasurer) comprised of Financial Secretary, Stewardship Chair and Endowment/Memorial Chair review budget and vote on acceptability. Budget is then submitted to congregation, first at a budget info meeting and finally at the Annual

• For the past 7+ years, the church Treasurer/Accountant has moved $250.00 per month from operating (checking account) into a designated money market fund labeled “New Pastor Fund.” As of March 31, 2018, there is $22,419.24 in that fund designated to be used for any legitimate expenses for interviewing, hiring, moving and installing a new pastor.

• We are willing to support further education and development costs associated with the New Pastor’s ministry.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION 75. Name one to three significant happenings in the history of your church that have shaped the identity of your congregation. Add the most important event in the life of your church in the past 10 years.

Decision to commit to an Open and Affirming process. Trinity has proudly proclaimed that we are an “Open and Affirming” community. Trinity’s commitment to the LGBQT community has resulted in singles, couples and families who are LGBQT, finding a safe and nurturing spiritual community. Open to progressive theological interpretations

During the last several years, Trinity has supported and hosted several sermons and lectures by Bishop John Shelby Spong. Our Pastoral and Lay Leaders have conducted several classes to understand and discuss his progressive theologies and writings. As a congregation, we are open to new and inclusive interpretations of The Lord’s word. We take it to heart that, “God is still speaking”, and we are still willing to learn.

Mission Focused Trinity has a vibrant multi-faceted Mission Program that supports several worthy causes. We provide physical and/or monetary support to:

Mardi Gras fundraiser for Back-Bay Mission

• Food sort at The Hunger Taskforce • Cemetery on Church grounds • Clothes, (Mitten tree, Undie 500, Soles for Souls) • Serving meals at Hope Center • School supplies for Women’s Center of Waukesha • Waukesha Food Pantry collections • Sponsor of Boy Scout troop 21 • Mercy Mats • Linus Project, Baby Blankets for Children's Hospital made by our youth. • Recycle Mobile Telephones • Recycle Medication Containers • Recycle Prescription Eyeglasses • Pop Top Tab collection for The Ronald McDonald house • There is rarely a period of the year that we are not actively supporting a Mission

project

76. Describe a specific change your church has managed in the recent past.

We were grappling with our church identity and deciding what we needed to do to define ourselves for the future and how to best remain relevant as a faith community. There were two specific directions that Trinity targeted.

• Commitment to an Open and Affirming policy Through a church-wide initiative, we

overwhelmingly decided to focus on opening our congregation to the LGBQT community by declaring Trinity an Open and Affirming congregation. We truly believe that anyone is welcome at Trinity, regardless of where they are on their personal spiritual journey or where their life has taken them.

Page 23: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 23

• Contemporary Worship and Music programs Trinity started to hold services that were geared to connect with the community at large and younger generations in particular. This included modern inclusive vernacular in the liturgy and varied music genres spanning country, jazz as well as traditional.

Annual Mardi Gras jazz worship

77. Every church has conflict, some minor, some larger. “Where two or three are gathered, there will be disagreement….” Describe your congregation’s values and practices when it comes to conflict.

This is an area where we will be needing help from our new Pastor. Due to the passionate feelings that our congregants have for Trinity, we often find ourselves in conflict. This tends to separate us into “factions” when it comes to addressing controversial issues. These issues tend to be more of the Mortar and Brick or financial variety as opposed to theological. We do not have a protocol for conflict resolution, which more often than not, results in the issues in question being deferred or abandoned completely. The fact that we are not good at conflict resolution, seems to be the one thing where everyone is in agreement.

79. Comment on what your church has learned about itself and its relationship with persons who provided ministerial leadership:

The Trinity UCC congregation is united in their love and dedication to the Church, however, the way each congregant chooses to express that love is as varied as the stars in the sky. Sometimes, this vast pool of opinion brings us into conflict with each other (church politics). Our new Minister must be able to navigate this divide and serve as a clarion call for cooperation and understanding. As a congregation we respond better to a “Teaching” leader as opposed to a more “Directed” form of leadership

80. Has any past leader left under pressure or by involuntary termination?

No.

81. Has your church been involved in a Situational Support Consultation?

No.

82. Has a past pastor been the subject of a Fitness Review while at your church?

No,

COMMUNITY VISION 83. How do the relationships and activities of your congregation extend outward in service and advocacy?

• Sidewalk library • Active website • Dog treat dispenser by sidewalk library • Pet blessing service at Trinity • Participant at ONA Booth at Pride-Fest • Craft Fair • Contemporary worship • Annual Jazz worship and (Back-Bay Fundraiser) • Sponsor Boy Scout Troop 21 • Mission breaks down its funds giving by local, national, and international. Most of our

funds are used to help within Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties • Trinity UCC has a very active Mission Committee which helps facilitate the congregation

in doing community outreach. o We participate in food, paper products, toiletries, school supplies, and clothing

drives. o We support the Hunger Task Force. o Hope Center meals and support Waukesha Provides (food pantry and shelters). o The Guest House in Milwaukee (men’s shelter) o UCC emergency effort relief

85. Many local churches love to tell the story of what they are doing in the community to transform lives. Some have identified certain aspects of their witness into the wider community using language shared with other UCC congregations. (Find more information as desired at ucc.org.) Check any statements below that apply to your UCC faith community.

Accessible to All (A2A) Creation Justice Economic Justice Faithful and Welcoming X- God Is Still Speaking (GISS) Border and Immigrant Justice Inter-cultural/Multi-racial Just Peace

X- Global Mission Church X- Open and Affirming (ONA) WISE Congregation for Mental Health Other UCC designations: Designations from other denominations None

86. Reflect on what the above statement(s) mean(s) to your community. Is your congregation interested in working toward any of the above statements of witness in the near future?

• We realize that, with having a Part Time Pastor, there will be time constraints on what the new Pastor can accomplish. The laity of this congregation provide a lot of administrative support through their work in various committees and the Council. We have been blessed with several members of our congregation that have significant experience with Lay Leadership which would be available to support our new Pastor to address all mutually acceptable goals.

• Through our recent Visioning Retreats, we have identified certain areas of focus. They

are: • How to effectively Grow Trinity’s congregation • Develop Strategic Plans for the Future • How to attract young people and families

87. Describe your congregation’s participation in ecumenical and interfaith activities (with other denominations and religious groups, local and regional).

Page 27: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 27

Trinity UCC currently does not participate in ecumenical or interfaith activities. In the past, we have rented out our fellowship space for a group of Muslims to worship but the members of Trinity did not participate. However, this has been discontinued (unsure as of why). We are looking to be more involved in ecumenical and interfaith activities, and are hoping for a settled pastor who is willing to help us with that part of our outreach.

88. If your congregation has a mission statement, how does that mission statement compare to the actual time spent engaging in different activities? Think of the range of activities from time spent gathering, to governance, to time spent going out.

Currently, Trinity is actively engaged in establishing a revised mission statement. We have solicited 4 members of the congregation to develop Mission Statements that we will be using during the summer months. When the congregation gets used to these various Mission Statements, we will then regroup and consolidate the various thoughts into one cohesive statement. As can be seen below, the initial mission statements all consistently focus on Open and Affirming, spiritual growth and a welcoming community. It is expected that this statement will be reviewed annually during the Strategic Review to assure that it stays active and relevant to our faith community.

• Trinity United Church of Christ is an open and affirming community dedicated to

building relationships with the Sacred and each other. We seek to reach out to the larger community around us by sharing, teaching and bringing the biblical word to life.

• Humbled by the grace of God’s love, we at Trinity United Church of Christ, endeavor to

be a spiritual, nurturing, and affirming congregation. We offer an open and welcoming reception to everyone, no matter where they are on life’s spiritual journey. Following the lead of Jesus Christ, we share our spirit and abundance with our neighbor and those of less fortunate circumstances.

• We are a people of a loving God nurturing community with one another, seeking to grow

spiritually, finding focus for our mission in the life of Jesus and welcoming all who care to share this journey.

• With open and affirming hearts, Trinity welcomes those seeking spiritual fulfillment.

With a firm foundation, taught to us by a loving God, we share our abundance with all those in need. We strive to be a beacon in a hostile world by doing Christ’s work with grace and love, always moving toward the light.

89. Reflect on the scope of work assigned to your pastor(s). How is their community ministry and their ministry in and on behalf of the wider church accounted for in the congregation’s expectations on their time?

Unfortunately, there is no reference to community ministry in any governing document at Trinity. This area, however, has been identified as a potential focus point via the Visioning Retreats that were conducted with the congregation. We are open to working alongside of

Page 28: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

the wider church and want to provide time for the pastor to participate as such (given the limitations of a half time ministry). We will help the pastor set reasonable expectations for half-time ministry, taking into consideration their needs and Trinity’s.

MISSION InSite 90. Comment on your congregation’s MissionInsite report with data for your neighborhood(s) or area. What trends and opportunities are shown?

The data from the MissionInsite “ExecutiveInsite” report (see Appendix G), confirms what we have indicated in earlier responses. The data indicates that we have several challenges that must be addressed with the help of the new Minister.

• Population of area as well as our congregation is getting older. • There is a lack of interest among the young adult population to joining churches. • Quadrennium Project shows lack of interest in traditional church services. • Fighting these Demographic battles, is going to take a lot of effort on the Church’s (UCC

and Trinity’s) part. • Our hope to become more racially diverse, is hitting up against the reality that our own

neighborhood is very Un-diverse. • To establish a more diverse congregation, we will have to pull people from a very wide

circle, from areas with long standing churches of African-American heritage.

As for our existing (ONA) mission, serving the LGBQT community, there are no real demographics to speak of in the “ExecutiveInsite” reports to support our ongoing mission activities. Trinity and the new Minister will have to get creative to address improving our mission to this underserved community.

91. How do your congregation’s internal demographics compare or contrast to a) the neighborhoods adjacent to your church, and b) other neighborhoods with which your church connects?

Trinity is generally regarded as a “Progressive” Church which has been moving to a more “Liberal” and inclusive interpretation of scripture. The Open and Affirming policy our congregation accepted by overwhelming vote is testament to that. Our congregation is also very senior with a significant portion of our members being retired and living on fixed incomes. The average age has increased in recent years as children have grown up, gone off to school and many have not returned to the area.

Page 29: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 29

As competition pressures increase on families for Sunday morning time (soccer, baseball, football, etc.) we have seen a reduction in young families in church. This leaves us with a small (but slowly growing) Sunday School program, and a lack of young single adults in the congregation. Our congregation is generally “graying” along with the population in our Brookfield community. The Brookfield area is predominantly upper middle class and politically conservative. It ranks in the upper 2% of communities in Wisconsin in terms of income and has a poverty rate of about 3.2%. Brookfield is overwhelmingly Caucasian (88%). It seems that the conventional wisdom of only 10% of people being interested in joining a church is probably correct in this community. There are some large conservative denominations in the area along with the tradition blanket of Lutheran Congregations that inhabit most Wisconsin communities.

See Appendix A for detail from the Self Respondents to the 2018 Trinity UCC Congregational Survey.

92. How are the demographics of the community currently shaping ministry, or not?

Recent new members to our congregation seem to be more focused on the Open and Affirming theology of Trinity as opposed to a more general attraction to any specific denomination or creed. If this continues, our focus clearly needs to shift from a conservative area like Brookfield being our main focus to a much broader focus for growth on the surrounding region. The areas of Menomonee Falls and Sussex seem to be growing with a younger population whose values may more closely approach the theology of Trinity. There are already a few UCC churches supporting these communities which may in fact limit our penetration of these potential markets. We should not discount the adjacent areas of Wauwatosa, Waukesha and Milwaukee where we could draw congregants. With the correct exposure, Trinity’s theology could resonate there also. If increased diversity is a target value, we clearly need to focus on areas other than Brookfield (88% Caucasian)

See Appendix B for detail from Census and various other sources covering Brookfield, WI.

93. What do you hear when you talk to community leaders and ask them what your church is known for?

There seems to be an arm’s length relationship between the Trinity and the city of Brookfield. Contact is more related to issues involving building and zoning as opposed to a more direct qualitative interaction. Recent contacts have been related to repairing the sanctuary after a fire, setting up the new lighted sign, and a zoning violation due to Trinity not taking down some UCC banners after the allotted time.

The lack of more in-depth contact is perhaps due to Trinity not focusing on ecumenical contacts, which would include the city.

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 30

94. What do new people in the church say when asked what got them involved?

Recent new members to our congregation have indicated that the most significant driver for them joining our congregation has been our focus on an Open and Affirming theology.

CLOSING PRAYER 96. Include here any prayer or dream for the minister you imagine journeying toward you that is meaningful to your Search Committee: Scripture Passage: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4, NIV Prayer: Gracious God. We give many thanks for our church, faith community, and for our search committee that has worked diligently this past year in trying to put together the best picture of our Trinity congregation based on surveys, interviews and retreats. We know we have some challenges, but we have a strong faith and are committed to show grace, compassion, and kindness to all who come through our doors. We value and practice our open and affirming status, and just like your Son, we never will turn anyone away. We ask that you help us find a pastor who will share our values, but challenge us to be better, to grow in our spirituality and to advance our mission-oriented spirit beyond the walls of our church. We know this process can be a long and arduous one, but we will keep you at the center of all we do and allow the spirit to lead us on the path we are meant to be on. Our next spiritual leader will walk that path beside us, no matter the bumps or twists in that journey. We will continually pray to you for strength and guidance. We do this in your name. Amen!

Describe some areas of strength in this church’s ministry. The greatest strength of this congregation is its people. They are open and welcoming, willing to learn and grow. People are growing spiritually in this place, with several having attended Lay Academy, another attending United Theological Seminary and another seeking ordination. They are engaged and invested in the church and energized about discovering new ways of reaching out to the community beyond their doors. Describe some areas for improvement in this church’s ministry. The greatest area for improvement in this faith community is in its willingness to learn to ‘think of others before they think of themselves.’ Conflict is still within the community and has often made it difficult to get people working together. Practicing the Jesus life seems to be part of the necessity for this to be resolved. Describe a significant experience you have had of this church’s ministry. As an interim, renewal and redevelopment pastor, my most significant experience has been a decision by the Search Committee to enter into retreats that helped them explore what it will take to move them in a new direction. Between 30-40 people engaged in 4 retreat sessions and the discussions. They are very engaged and willing to learn. Anything else you wish to share. As someone who has been doing renewal and redevelopment work for many years, there are significant pieces for a pastor to build on – strong lay leadership is among them, but also a building with good exposure, a new sign, a great website, a handicapped accessible building, and wonderful music program. There is much to build on!

This ExecutiveInsite Report has been prepared for Wisconsin Conference UCC. Its purpose is to "tell the demographic story" of the defined geographic study area. ExecutiveInsite integrates narrative analysis with data tables and graphs. Playing on the report name, it includes 12 "Insites" into the study area’s story. It includes both demographic and beliefs and practices data. ExecutiveInsite is intended to give an overview analysis of the defined geographic study area. A defined study area can be a region, a zip code, a county or some custom defined geographic area such as a radius or a user defined polygon. The area of study is displayed in the map below

The Trinity Study Area (5 Mile Radius) Population, Household Trends Population: The estimated 2019 population within the study area is 105,865. The 2024 projection would see the area grow by 2,479 to a total population of 108,344. The population within the study area is growing somewhat faster than the statewide growth rate. While the study area is projected to grow by 2.3% in the next five years, the state is projected to grow by 1.7%. The study area’s estimated average change rate is 0.5%. Households: The households within the community are growing faster than the population, thus the average population per household in 2010 was 2.51 but by 2024 it is projected to be 2.50. Compare this to the statewide average which for the current year is estimated at 2.49 persons per household.

Population per Household: The relationship between population and households provides a hint about how the community is changing. When population grows faster than households, it suggests an increase in the persons per household. This can only happen when more persons are added either by birth or other process such as young adults in multiple roommate households or young adults returning to live with parents. In some communities this can occur when multiple families live in the same dwelling unit. Family households provide an additional hint about the changing dynamics of a community. If family household growth follows population growth, then it would be reasonable to assume that the increasing population per household comes from additional children. This is the case within the the study area. Family households are growing as fast as the population suggesting that the increasing population per household is from additional children.

RACIAL-ETHNIC TRENDS The US population’s racial-ethnic diversity is continually adding new and rich cultural mixes. This data considers the five groups for which trending information is available. Please note that several groups are aggregated into a single category due to their smaller size. Those persons who indicated Hispanic or Latino ethnicity along with a racial category have been separated into a Hispanic or Latino category.

The Population: Racial/Ethnic Trends table provides the actual numbers and percentage of the total population for each of the five racial/ethnic categories. Pay special attention to the final column on the right. This will quickly indicate the direction of change from the last census to the current five-year projection.

This graph displays history and projected change by each racial/ethnic group. This chart shows the percentage of each group for the current year estimate

This chart shows the percentage of each group for the current year estimate.

• Asian (Non-Hisp) is projected to remain about the same over the next five years. • White (Non-Hisp) is also projected to remain about the same over the next five years.

Black/African American is projected to remain about the same over the next five years. • Hispanic or Latino is projected to remain about the same over the next five years.

AGE TRENDS A community’s age structure and how it is changing is an important part of its story. Overall, the American Population has been aging as the Baby Boomers progress through each phase of life. This has been abetted by episodes of declining live births. However, this picture may particularize differently from community to community. There are communities in the US where the average age is lower than some others. In other cases, there is a clear shift toward senior years as the Boomers enter their retirement years. The Age Trends section explores two variables. AVERAGE AGE TRENDS, Five important snapshots of a community from five data points; the 2000 census, the last census, the current year estimate, the five-year projection and the ten-year forecast. These five numbers will indicate the aging direction of a community. PHASE OF LIFE TRENDS, Breaks the population into seven life phases that the population passes through in its life time.

Average age findings: The Average Age Trend chart shows both history and projection of the change in average age in the study area. The average age of the study area has been rising for several years. It is projected to rise over the next five years.

A comparison to the average age of the state helps to contextualize the significance of the average age of the study area and its history and projection. In the graph below, the study area and state are laid out side by side. The state's average age is estimated to be lower than the study area.

Phase of life findings The Phase of Life analysis provides insight into the age distribution of a population across the different stages of life experience. It can reveal a community in transition. Pay special attention to the color codes of the Change column (below). It will immediately indicate which phases are increasing or decreasing as a percentage of the population.

Page 52: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 52

Summary of Phase of Life Findings: Phase of Life changes reflect the age profile of a community. On average, it takes 2.1 children per woman to replace both mother and father. If the percentage of the population under 20 is declining as a percentage of the total it is likely that the community will see an increase in the more senior aged population possibly due to a decline in birth rates. In this study area children 17 years of age and younger are declining as a percentage of the total population. Considering the other end of the phases of life, adults 55 years of age and older are increasing as a percentage of the total population. In summary it may be that the community is aging as children are raised and leave but parents remain. SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN TRENDS The School Aged Children variable provides a snapshot of three levels of the population that comprise school age children. The three levels roughly correspond to the following.

Page 53: LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE · 2019. 9. 24. · Trinity United Church of Christ is, at the moment, a church in transition. It has a strong faith community, and it is a faith community that

LOCAL CHURCH PROFILE – 2017 PAGE 53

Summary of School Aged Children Findings:

• Early Elementary children ages 5 to 9 are projected to increase as a percentage of children between 5 and 17 by 1.0%.

• High School aged children ages 15 to 17 are declining as a percentage of children between 5 and 17 by -0.7%.

• Late Elementary to Middle School aged children ages 10 to 14 are declining a percentage of children between 5 and 17 by -0.3%.

• Overall, children are aging , but there is some evidence of a resurgence of children in the younger years.

HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY INCOME TRENDS Average Household Income and Per Capita Income indicate the level of financial resources within a community. In this study area, the estimated current year average household income is $109,081. The average household income is projected to grow by 11.5% to $121,674. Per Capita Income is a measure of the average income of all persons within a household. For family households, this would include all children. It does not mean that each person actually contributes to the average income from work. It is calculated by dividing the aggregate household income by the population. The estimated per capita income for the current year is $43,566. The Per Capita Income is projected to grow by 11.6% to $48,628.

FAMILY INCOME

Family income is a sub-set of household income. It excludes non-family households. Family households include two or more persons who are related and living in the same dwelling unit. Children are more likely to live in family households. Non-family households are households in which two or more persons live in the same dwelling unit but are unrelated. The number of families with annual incomes above $100,000 is projected to decline over the next five years. For the current year, it is estimated that 50.2% of all family incomes exceed $100,000 per year. In five years, that number is projected to be 49.9%.

MEDIAN INCOME BY RACE AND ETHNICITY Median income by race and ethnicity is a subset of household income. Median income is that point where there are as many households with incomes greater than the median as there are households with incomes less than the median.

HOUSEHOLDS AND CHILDREN TRENDS The diversity of child rearing environments are increasing along with the many other types of growing diversity in the US. To understand this, we begin with the types of households that exist in a community. There are:

• family households with children under 18 • family households without children under 18

The concern of this analysis is family households with children under 18. Of the types of family households with children there are:

• Married couple families • Single parent families (father or mother)

A comparison to the state reveals to what extent this community is similar or dissimilar to the state as a whole. The study area's married couple households with children are dissimilar to the state's profile. The percentage of single parent households with children is less than the state.

MARITAL STATUS TRENDS Population by Marital Status considers the number and percentage of persons 15 years of age and greater by their current marital status. Trend information as well as a comparison to the study area’s state marital status types provide two different views of this social reality.

In this community, the current year estimate of marital status reveals a community of adults more likely to be married than the state average for adults. The percentage single never married is lower than the state average for adults 15 years and older. Divorce is less prevalent than the state wide average.

POPULATION BY EMPLOYMENT Like educational attainment, an analysis of a community by its employment types and categories provides an important “insite” into its socio-economics. This analysis looks at two factors. First is a report of the employed population 16 and over by the traditional “blue collar” and “white collar” occupations and compares these to the state. Second, it looks at the community by the seven standard census bureau occupations and compares them to the state.

A powerful way to envision demographics is by following a generation through its phases of life. This is because there are, in a general sense, common life experiences at each phase of life. Using the Strauss and Howe model of generations one is able to see a more three-dimensional view of a generational group, bringing mere age demographics to life. Members of a generation share three qualities:

• An age location in history • Some common beliefs and behaviors, including basic attitudes about risk taking, culture

and values, civic engagement, and family life. • A common perceived membership in a generation, e.g., Boomers, Gen X, Millennials etc.
