TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

FRIENDS OF PENTRE MAWR PARK

At a meeting of the Parks and Play Areas sub-committee held on 6th July, members of Abergele Town Council and officers of Conwy County Borough Council decided that they would strive to achieve a Green Flag Award for Pentre Mawr Park by 2011/12 and a budget has been set to assist in the achievement of this. The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by the Civic Trust, was introduced in Wales in 2002 with the backing of the Countryside Council for Wales. It seeks to encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways, thus improving the quality of open spaces for the enjoyment of the general public. Several Councillors had ideas for improving the Park in line with Green Flag requirements, but is was decided to involve the general public in the choosing of initiatives and to this end to set up a “Friends of Pentre Mawr Park” group. Members of the sub-committee decided to advertise a public meeting to invite interested parties to find out more about the “Friends” initiative and this meeting will be held at 6.30pm at the Town Hall, Llanddulas Road, Abergele on Tuesday 22nd September. If you are interested in helping to improve our Park, please make a note of this date in your diary and come along.

COMMUNITY SKIPS

The Council has decided to re-introduce manned community skips at the Town Hall, to assist those residents who have difficulty in disposing of larger household items at the civic amenity site at Gofer. The first skip will be provided on the car park at the Town Hall, Llanddulas Road, on Saturday 19th September and it will be available from approximately 9am. The skip will be emptied once and replaced, but will then be removed when full. A further skip will be provided in the New Year.

FAIRTRADE WALES Abergele Town Council recently made a strengthened resolution to support Fairtrade. The vast majority of Fairtrade products can’t be produced in this country, so the message is to buy local where possible and when buying imported goods, such as tea and coffee, buy Fairtrade. The Fairtrade steering group is currently working towards meeting the criteria to enable Abergele to be recognised as a Fairtrade town. If your organisation or business uses or sells Fairtrade products, or if you are interested in becoming involved with Fairtrade in Abergele, please contact the secretary, Cllr. Sam Rowlands at [email protected] or Tel: 07825 588621. For more information on Fairtrade in Wales visit www.fairtradewales.com ANNUAL GRANTS Applications for grant funding are invited annually from Voluntary Groups, Community Groups or Charities operating in the Abergele area. LOCAL NEWS continued … FOREST SCHOOL

Cyngor Tref Abergele Town Council – Golygyddol/Editorial – Hysbysiad/Advertisement – Ffôn/Tel 01745 833242

Ysgol Glan Gele have cornered off an area by their conservation site for the Forest School and a Story Telling corner. Forest Schools use the outdoor environment as a ‘classroom’ where children can explore their environment, collect items they have found. This encourages and inspires the children in a woodland environment and helps them to grow in confidence, be independent, resourceful, resilient and reflective thinkers in order to develop well being and a sense of self worth. This facility was opened by the Mayor and Francesca Kay, a professional storyteller who has been working together with Mike Kivi, a poet and the children. The following is a poem written by the children:

THE DRAGON Diamond the dragon Lives in a cave His eyes are big He isn’t a coward He’s really brave He likes to eat coconut, ice cream, fire sticks and jelly He goes to Aldi, In Abergele. by Harry, Chloe, Olivia, Sophie and Tizzy

PENSARN BEACH A few of us know that in Abergele we have one of the ecological jewels of the area sited at Pensarn beach. In 1977 part of the beach to the west of Beach Cafe was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its vegetated shingle and smaller area of dune grassland.

Pensarn Beach SSSI

The shingle has limited distribution in Wales, is the best example of its type in the county and is included as a priority habitat in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, which was produced in 1994 and aims to protect Britain’s most threatened species.

A number of the plants are regionally rare, such as Sea Kale, Ray’s knotgrass, Sea Radish and the Sea Holly, which can tolerate burial by sand or shingle and is protected from salt spray by its waxy coating.

Vehicles have had a devastating effect on the flora, including the rare Oyster plant, which has never been recorded anywhere else in Wales. Fortunately, the use of cars and motorised vehicles on the beach is now under control. Please respect this area and help to protect this important habitat by clearing up after your dog and reporting any motor vehicle activity on the beach.

LOCAL CLUBS & ORGANISATIONS ABERGELE CAMERA CLUB

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of our former Chairman and founder member, Hamish McFie in May, just prior to the June edition of the Newsletter being distributed. Our condolences to his partner, Muriel Landy and their families. Hamish’s humour and wisdom will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

There was a Club outing to Amlwch Port and Parys Mountain at the end of April, which was well attended and our next venture is a little further afield to the Ironbridge Gorge in July.

June saw officers of the North Wales Police Special Branch visit St Paul’s Church to give members of Abergele Camera Club and other camera clubs in the region a talk on the Anti-Terrorist laws as they relate to photographers, followed by a question and answer session.

By the time this newsletter is distributed, we will have had our month-long exhibition of photography at St Michael’s Church in town as part of the celebrations of the Year of St Elfod. I hope many of you will have had the opportunity to visit the exhibition and enjoyed our photography.

ABERGELE & DISTRICT U3A We have had an eventful year and now look forward to our AGM on 3 September in the Old People’s Club. We have had a variety of speakers this year from a talk on Thomas Telford to Owls being brought in to the meeting from the Owl Rescue Centre situated at Bodafon Farm, Llandudno. It was quite amazing how large and small the Owl species is, and three were brought to the meeting. We have unfortunately lost the Line Dancing teacher through ill health, and we wish her better health in the future. We hope to replace these classes with another form of dancing, but until we are able to arrange these, I will not give any more information. We are always indebted to the group leaders for taking lessons and also the people who help at the monthly meetings, making the tea etc., and the lady who arranges the speakers each time, and the ladies who welcome anyone who is new to the meeting. We have a policy of letting prospective new members come to a monthly meeting and attend group lesson or lessons of their choice, before they pay a membership fee. In June we had a day trip to Wylfa Power Station, which followed on from a talk given earlier in the year, and all on the trip enjoyed the day. Our Annual Dinner was held at Abergele Golf Club in July. Our AGM welcomes new people and we have all present members of the Committee ready to serve again for the coming year. Our membership is currently 272 and we are lucky to have such support from local people and those from further afield. If you care to have a ‘taste’ of the U3A, please telephone our Secretary on 01745 824095 for further information.

ABERGELE AUTUMN CLUB We continued our monthly coach trips with a visit to Liverpool ONE on 6 May. On the way we enjoyed a leisurely tour through Port Sunlight Village followed by visits to the Museums and Shopping Centres. A most enjoyable day in really nice weather. On 12 June we visited the Foulridge Canal for a lunch on ‘The Emperor’, followed by a visit to Oswaldtwistle Mill for afternoon shopping. Everyone agrees that this venue is the most popular of all our yearly activities. Our July trip consisted of a Mystery Tour, visiting the Candle Factory followed by afternoon shopping in Nantwich. Again the weather was kind to us. The Club continues on maximum occupancy, being restricted by room size we regret that the waiting list must continue for the foreseeable future. ABERGELE HANDICAPPED CLUB The Club has been out and about during the last few months with an afternoon tea at Plas Maenan Hotel and a super lunch with entertainment at Maenan Abbey Hotel. Members continue to enjoy the many other activities the Club provides. In the past few months we have had a Country and Western singer and the children from St Elfod School, who gave us a lovely concert singing Songs from the Shows. Our annual Church Service was held in the Marble Church in July, when we said a fond farewell to Rev Berw Hughes and Rev Peter Rimmer, and we wish them well in their retirement. Mrs Barbara Pilley was presented with a gift for her wonderful dedication driving the mini-bus for us every week. We are now desperate for a new driver for our Tuesday afternoon meetings – if anyone can help, please contact Mrs Pilley at the Stroke Club. The Club closed for August and re-opened on 1st September. New members are always welcome. Mrs Pat Parker (Leader), 49 Bryn Twr, Abergele LL22 8DD. Tel: 01745 832273 FRIENDS OF AWEL Y MOR Whilst still awaiting the alterations to start at Awel y Mor, the Friends are still visiting the residents and remembering them on their birthdays.

We thank the staff for their excellent care and concern for all the residents and anyone who visits there all get the impression of friendliness and helpfulness that exists at the Home. The residents were able to get out and about during the good weather but the rainy season did hamper their activities a little. Now there will be Autumn activities at the Home, culminating with a Christmas celebration.

The Club year has continued under the Presidency of Sally Kirkham, and at the April meeting members were asked to utilise their brain power to answer questions in a quiz that had been prepared by Secretary Wendy O’Brien and Pat Parker. In May, a talk was given by Mrs.Lynne Pritchard from the Departure Lounge and Coffee Shop in Market Street who told members about the progress made by the business since it first opened as a travel shop in Chapel Street. A wine bar has recently been added and a selection of light and speciality meals are available throughout the day and also in the evening.

The 28th Annual General Meeting of the Club was held at the Kinmel Manor Hotel on the 22nd June when Sally thanked members for all their support and hard work during the past twelve months, and extended congratulations to Delyth MacRae upon her becoming Mayor . She also presented gifts to Treasurer Anne Owen, Secretary Wendy O’Brien, Overseas Service Organiser Gill Hughes, and Club Correspondent Lorna Gregson to thank them for their assistance during the year.

Sally then inducted the incoming President, Sybil Newcombe, who presented her with a bouquet of flowers. The other officers for the year are: Treasurer - Gwenan Jones Secretary - Wendy O’Brien Overseas Service Organiser-Pat Tudor Jones Club Correspondent - Lorna Gregson Further knitted blankets have been sent to the Kinmel Bay Surgery in aid of the ‘Load a Lorry’ project, and stamps and reading glasses have been given to St.Kentingern’s Hospice. During the past year the Club has made donations amounting to £1,150 to various local clubs, organisations and charities, at home and abroad. Lorna Gregson

ABERGELE BLIND CLUB During June & July the club have enjoyed various activities, Marshall Morris gave a very interesting talk on the Titanic, and Ray Lewis gave a colourful insight into the life of Ivor Novello. The Club reopens on the 15th September and anyone interested in joining the Club who is registered blind or partially sighted is welcomed and should contact Delyth MacRae on Tel: 01745 825066 for further information.

ABERGELE HOSPITAL LEAGUE OF FRIENDS The Abergele Hospital League of Friends continue with their work raising funds and manning the tea bar in the Manchester Lounge at the hospital. The annual Garden Fete which took place on Saturday 27 June was successful and enjoyable, despite the fact that due to the bad weather on the day, proceedings had to be held inside the hospital. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr Ted Shawcross who had spent a long time during his childhood as a patient at the hospital in the early days when it was a sanatorium. Mr Shawcross was afterwards presented with a plant and gift token by Miss Sophie Truesdale, the daughter of a Staff Nurse from the Outpatients Department. Among those attending in support of the event were the Mayor of Abergele, Cllr Delyth MacRae and her Consort, Mr Chris MacRae, Mr David Jones MP and Mrs Sarah Jones and Darren Millar AM. In the Manchester Lounge, Beulah Brass entertained an appreciative audience with a programme of lively music, and pupils from St Elfod School, in their attractive costumes, put on a delightful display of country dancing. Mr Magico was also there with his ever popular Punch and Judy show. The afternoon ended with the drawing of the raffle. The League’s next fund-raising event will be the Coffee Morning to be held in the Old People’s Club Rooms (Red Cross) on Saturday 10 October between 10.00am to 12 noon. We are always pleased to see new and old members. Please join us on a Friday morning from 10.00 – 11.30am at the Presbyterian Hall in Pensarn, where coffee and biscuits are served for 30p. You will then hear of all the activities planned and would be very welcome to join in any or all of them. We send our best wishes to Mrs Freda Lane who is celebrating a very special birthday in September and also to Kath and John on their forthcoming marriage, also in September. Other members are always in our thoughts, especially Mr B Reynolds. We remember all he has done for the Club and are sorry he is house-bound now. Best wishes to you Bill, and to everyone else who is not in the best of health.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ABERGELE BRANCH I am delighted to be able to tell you that the 2008/09 Poppy Appeal total has passed the ten thousand pound mark! This is a real milestone for the Branch, and the people we have to thank are all of you. Once again, the co-operation of local businesses and the hard work of our dedicated team of collectors have been vital, but without your generosity, it would all be for nothing. By the time this Newsletter is distributed we will be well into our preparations for this year’s Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Sunday Parade. If you would like to help us by selling poppies, please contact me on the telephone number below – just a couple of hours of your time would mean a great deal. You don’t have to be a Legion member to do this, and the times and dates can be worked out to suit you. All money collected is used for the welfare support of ex-Servicemen and women and their dependants. With current Armed Forces commitments, as well as the needs of veterans from previous conflicts, your help and generosity will always be essential.

This is a new unit for children and young people who are experiencing complex mental health problems such as severe eating disorders, mood disorders and self-harm. The buildings have been designed specifically for young patients, many of whom have contributed to the planning process. The unit provides a seven-day service, with 24-hour emergency cover and will increase the number of child and adolescent mental health beds in north Wales to 18, including a six-bed emergency or high dependency ward and a 12-bed planned treatment ward. PRIDE OF CONWY 2009 At the recent awards held at The Venue, Llandudno, Abergele Library Project Team received the ‘Conwy Informed and Inclusive Award’ for the recent refurbishment at the Library. Gwrych Fete Success

Hundreds of people enjoyed the Gwrych Fete in July. This event, held on the 190th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Gwrych Castle, included guided tours up to the castle itself, birds of prey demonstrations, a Welsh clog dancing display as well as entertainment by Beulah Brass and afternoon teas. Several people have asked for the Gwrych Fete to become an annual event. What do you think? Please contact the Town Hall on 01745 833242 or email [email protected] to make your views known.

St Elfod Mediaeval Fair

We look forward to the St Elfod Mediaeval Fair to take place in Bridge Street on Saturday 5th September from 1.00pm – 6.00pm. A variety of stalls and attractions will be on hand. Do come in costume if you can! St Elfod’s Head

Have you noticed the new carved head of St Elfod which has been placed above the west door of St Michael’s Church? There was a carved head there previously, but over the centuries all the features had eroded away leaving a faceless oval shaped stone. Thanks to a number of donations we now have a tangible reminder of the Year of St Elfod. We are grateful to sculptor Simon Winter of Ruthin for this fine piece of work. Congratulations

Congratulations to the seventeen people, including five on horseback, who, between them, followed almost all of the 25 miles of Abergele parish boundary. Thank you to the Mayor, Cllr Delyth Macrae for coming along to wave the participants on their way! Thank You

A sincere thank you to all who have worked hard to ensure the success of the events organised for the year of St Elfod and particularly all who have attended the planning meetings throughout the year. Please do support the remaining events which they have planned. A special thank you to members of Abergele Camera Club for making a pictorial record of the event and to all who contributed to the exhibitions in St Michael’s Church during August.
