“The existence of prostitutes and their customers in a particular area has the effect of making it more difficult for all women to use that space, especially when prostitution occurs in a residential area. The atmosphere in a red-light district enables–even encourages–men to assert power through harassment. Women are transformed into representations of sexuality, availability and commodity (Rendell,2001). Hence, street prostitution and sexual harassment as its side effect essentially define women’s spatial experience in these zones.”Koskela 2005
