Baildon In Bloom’s “Wacky Scarecrow Walk” on Saturday 11th September started off at 7am in pouring rain when the exhibitors

began their setting-up session, which lasted three hours. Fortunately the rain didn’t last long and it meant exhibitors were soon setting up their scarecrows around the village. Apart from the odd shower, by lunchtime the sun was shining and crowds were pouring into the village. The Committee has noticed that the public created a “carnival atmosphere”. Everybody was smiling and laughing and it was obvious that they had

come to enjoy themselves and were eager to start searching for the 172 scarecrows that had been set up around the village and of course to make a note of the best scarecrows in the competition.There were some wonderful characters like Wallace and Gromit in St John’s churchyard, along with Buzz Lightyear and other fantastic creations. One humorous scarecrow up Westgate was “Computer Man”, which kept blowing up with a cloud of smoke. Further up the road was a scarecrow high up on a lighting standard, doing a pole dance to music – just a bit risqué!

There was a spectacular creation made by members of a Mencap group called Unique Voices based at Ian Clough Hall. Their theme was “Pirates of the Caribbean”. They had built a pirate ship called Black Pearl, which was 20 feet long with cannons and an anchor and decorated with gold lettering. There were scarecrows on board the ship of Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell. The staff and the members of the group were dressed as pirates and were having a good old sing-song with sea shanties and this made it all very realistic. The boat will feature in the group’s pantomime version of Peter Pan, to be performed

at Ian Clough Hall on 17th November, 1st December and 8th December, at 1pm. Please telephone 07 919 542 016 for tickets, which cost £2.The event turned out to be one of the best for Baildon In Bloom. We can look forward to another Wacky Scarecrow Walk next year. The winner for the best group of scarecrows, awarded a silver platter, was the pirate ship. The winners in the general category were: (1st Prize, cup) Wallace and Grommit, (2nd Prize, digital camera) Sponge Bob and (3rd Prize, meal for four at Webster’s) Computer Man.

Bingley ShowWhat a Great Day Out at the Bingley Show

Bingley ShowBingley Show has always been extremely popular with people travelling from all over the region to attend and this years’ event was no different.

This was much to the relief of the organisers as with the extended closure of Ireland Bridge, it was thought that exhibitor numbers may be down, however the bridge re-opened just in time and with a fabulous day of weather; Bingley Show experienced another triumphant year! New to the main ring was a crazy clown feature, which entertained the kids and adults alike. For older children the motorbike display team were back, a popular spectacle and the noise and thrills once again wowed the crowds; added to this the old favourites, the sheep dog display, falconry, heavy horses, and a riding for the disabled demonstration, plus many more attractions, made a great day out for all

the family. Titan the Robot was once again the main draw for children, and he also made an unexpected appearance at the Airedale Agricultural Society Lunch, which went down a storm with the dignitaries, Titans cheeky charm winning everyone over! Personally our favourite attractions were the sheep shearing Australian with the dancing sheep, who also educated his audience as to the reasons why sheep are sheared – he brought out the child in everyone in a very clever and entertaining way. There were also some marvellous old cars on show, each having been lovingly restored and kept in pristine condition by the owners. I absolutely loved the Bubble Car which brought back fond childhood memories of riding around in my elderly Auntie’s many years ago. I would love to get my hands on one now! The prize bulls on show had to be seen to be believed, huge muscular beasts so ripped they would have given Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime a run for his money, and they were in their

element being groomed and pampered in readiness for their audience and judging panel. “Our panels provide a decorative and functional fi nish to walls and ceilings in any room. They are however ideally suited to bathrooms and kitchens with many advantages over ceramic tiles.

They are much quicker to fi t, there’s no need for grout, and they offer improved insulation and will not support bacteria or mould growth!” Explains Damian Campbell, owner of Yorkshire Cladding Centre Ltd in Bradford.

Damian, originally from Bingley, moved away in 2002 to Newcastle after being made redundant from the Bradford & Bingley. He worked for his cousin selling internal upvc cladding in Newcastle until May this year.

After marrying his wife, Amanda in 2007, they decided to move back to Bingley in May this year as Damian missed family and friends, and this was the perfect opportunity to set up Yorkshire Cladding Centre in his local area.

A superb, cost effective and more decorative alternative to tiles, decorative cladding was extremely popular in Newcastle and seeing that not many people sell this product in the Leeds/Bradford area, Damian saw a gap in the market. “The cladding is easy to install, even the most basic DIY enthusiasts can fi t it. I carry a large range of colours and styles along with assorted

fi nishing trims and adhesives. My showrooms have been specifi cally designed for people to look at what’s available and how fantastic a fi nished room looks.

Here at MAD Publications, we absolutely love it when we discover someone who offers a unique service that is perfect for all start up businesses and businesses wanting to move to the next level. So we were absolutely ecstatic to come across Andy Thompson and his brilliant concept TooCan!

For any business needing a ‘knock ‘em dead’ website without the usual massive financial outlay for design and hosting, Andy is the man to speak with, for reasons we will go into shortly. First let’s tell you a little about Andy and how TooCan came into being. Andy studied mechanical and production engineering after leaving school and found a passion for designing products that offered a solution to everyday problems, a passion that grew during his time working for a plastics engineering company after he finished his apprenticeship. Then through a chance meeting he was introduced to some people who worked in the security industry and he started to develop security systems and solutions for protection to high risk corporate organisations, including solutions for such as anti-terrorism. This line of work took Andy all over Europe, however after a family bereavement, he decided on a change of direction, going back to his roots developing, manufacturing

and marketing his own products. To date Andy has sold over one million products that he has personally designed, manufactured and marketed and he has two products currently in development which are almost ready to market; one is for the security industry which will be launched under a new brand called Ko-Ko, and one for consumers, both are being kept tightly under wraps until completed as the volumes Andy anticipates selling run into literally hundreds of thousands. As part of the process and the marketing mix when launching his products, Andy has developed many of his own websites, some as promotional sites and some for direct sales. It’s offi cial: children know their carrots from their

courgettes

A survey of 1,500 children around the UK has shown that it’s not all bad news when it comes to kids and vegetables. On average, children aged 3-11 recognised over 80% of fruit and veg

in organic vegbox company Riverford’s summer challenge. The vegetables children were asked to identify included commonly available carrots, potatoes and broccoli, as well as the more unusual kohl rabi, globe artichokes and fennel. Three quarters of children said they eat at least half of the fruit and veg; 4% said they eat them all; and only 5% said they eat less than a quarter of them.

Riverford also quizzed kids on their favourite and least liked fruit and veg. Carrots came out on top, followed by sweetcorn and broccoli. The most disliked veg was Brussels sprouts, then courgettes.

Andrew, who delivers Riverford vegboxes to families throughout North & West Yorkshire, said “We’re really encouraged that not all children think milk comes from cartons or tomatoes in tins. With kids going back to school and getting into a healthy routine after the holidays, lots of

Chocolate courgette cake

By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field KitchenTaken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book120g softened unsalted butter125ml sunfl ower oil100g caster sugar200g soft brown sugar3 eggs, lightly beaten130ml milk350g plain fl our2 tsp baking powder4 tbsp cocoa powder450g courgettes, peeled and fi nely grated1 tsp vanilla extractPut the butter, sunfl ower oil and both sugars in a bowl and beat together until light and fl uffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and then the milk.Sift the dry ingredients together and fold them into the mixture. Stir in the courgettes and vanilla, then spoon the mixture into a 20x35cm baking tin lined with baking parchment. Place in an oven preheated to 190°C and bake for 35-45 minutes, until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cut into squares whilst still warm.

These results seem to back up our theory: the children of Riverford customers ate a wider range of ‘weird’ veg than those of non-customers.

The veg challenge has been taken by children at numerous shows this summer from Otley Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, Bingley Show, Halifax Show, Ripley Show and most recently at Keighley Show, the veg challenge proved very popular and got local kids thinking about where their food comes from. Riverford will be exhibiting at the West Yorkshire Organic Show on 18th September in Exhibition Hall, Saltaire as part of the Saltaire Festival the veg challenge will be their on the day for anyone wanting to test their veg knowledge.
