Roberts Park, Saltaire

In 1953, Titus Salt, then 53 years old, moved his wool business from the centre of Bradford to his new model village on the banks of the River Aire. He was prompted to do this because of the rising death rate affecting Bradford’s workforce. This was a decision he made in 1848, when, as Mayor of Bradford, there occurred a Cholera outbreak that killed 480 people.

Deciding on the area he wanted, he appointed Lockwood & Mawson Architects, who had just finished building Bradford Town Hall and The Wool Exchange. Work started on his new mill and homes for the workers in 1851. Titus Salt laid down strict conditions for people moving into the houses in the new village, there were to be no public houses, and he banned clothes lines but made alternative arrangements for ‘wash day’ – he built a huge wash house and incorporated drying facilities with constant hot water and hot piping to dry the clothes! For their entertainment he built the wonderful Victoria Hall, with a ballroom and many rooms for meetings. The hospital he built was well equipped and still functions to this day. Schools for pupils of all ages were built and a college - which again is still a hive of activity. He also built a wonderful

church with its dome and churches for all denominations. One of the buildings meant for 800 Sunday School pupils was demolished to make way for a car park! Lockwood and Mawson, the architects, used an Italian influence in all of their buildings, which, coupled with the new Yorkshire stone mined locally, produced a beautiful picture. One of the main features is the main chimney, modelled on the Santa Maria Gloriosa Church in Venice. To ensure the health of his workforce, Titus built Roberts Park, to provide an area for them to enjoy fresh air, sunshine and exercise, and it contained a cricket club, a cricket pitch and pavilion and an arboretum of beautiful trees that still stand proudly today. There is only one name for this architectural masterpiece...Saltaire! Unfortunately, after the death of Sir Titus in December 1876, funding for the park started to dry up, leading to its

deterioration and it became neglected and a disgrace - when suddenly out of the blue came LOTTERY MONEY! And behold, plans were soon underway to give the park a makeover costing millions. On completion of the work, a celebration was held on Saturday May22nd this year, where The Lord Mayor officially opened the new band stand. People turned up in their thousands to be entertained by various bands including The Titus Salt New School Jazz Group! He would have been very happy and proud to see his beloved park restored to its former glory and enjoyed by so many.

The Baildon in Bloom Committee is currently busy planning the next Wacky Scarecrow Walk for Saturday 11th September, and would like to invite members of the public to send in their application forms as soon as possible. The forms are now available in most shops around the village.

This booking system worked really well last year and was a great help to the organisers who try to make sure everything runs smoothly, no

mean feat when you have so many people and scarecrows to contend with! There will be no set theme as anything goes, so please put your thinking caps on and have a go. The children will love it, as they did last year, and you never know you may even win a Silver Cup – presented for the ‘Best Scarecrow on the Walk’.

The Launch of the Wacky Scarecrow Walk by Baildon Resident, Ron Bairstow

Last year saw a record number of scarecrows, 220 in tota, so let’s see if this year there can be even more! I have ordered the sunshine for the day already, for there is nothing worse than looking at a wet scarecrow!

You may have seen in the local press that Matthew

Splash Swimming Academy provides children’s swimming lessons

of the highest standard to families in and around the Bradford area. We limit the class sizes to an absolute maximum of 4 children, and all our instructors teach in the water. We fi nd that progression is far more profound, strokes are more technically correct and that the overall enjoyment of the lessons and relationship with the instructors is greatly improved.

When children are in crowded classes, often very little individual feedback is provided. These classes frequently suffer from instructors teaching on poolside which can make it diffi cult for the children to hear and see the demonstrations, this therefore hinders learning and progression, and quite often the instructor is unable to provide stroke analysis on all the children. However, 1-1 lessons don’t provide enough interaction and

competition which is why we fi nd our 1-4 the perfect balance. With the individual attention we provide, you will fi nd your child is more confi dent with the belief to push their boundaries in the safe knowledge that the instructor is there to support and encourage them. This often results in the earlier removal of buoyancy aids and the child swimming distances unaided with the correct stroke.

Our instructors initially focus on breaststroke with beginners and gently introduce frontcrawl & backstroke leg action and body position. We then progress the children through our distance awards scheme developing their strokes and overall water skills.

Our summer intensive which runs 16-20th August provides a fantastic opportunity for new customers to experience what Splash has to offer. All term time and summer courses are held at St Bedes Catholic School in Heaton, Bradford with a duration of 30 minutes per lesson. Splash Swimming Academy caters for all abilities, and takes children from as young as 3 ½ years old.

If you wish to book your children onto one of our courses, or wish to make an enquiry, then please don’t hesitate to contact Brad Hinchliffe on 07890 854408 or visit www.splash-academy.co.uk for further details.

Spring is the perfect time for home-owners to get their house in order and this usually includes the one job that is constantly overlooked... the over-worked oven!

Even the most enthusiastic of Spring cleaners fi nd donning rubber gloves and tackling the oven one of the most loathed household chores, and if people are not thorough with their oven cleaning, fat and food can cause future problems which could result in an oven fi re and it’s also a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs. This is where Ovenu comes to the rescue! Owner, Richard Greenwood, runs the local franchise of Ovenu, the UK’s most prestigious oven cleaning company, and his is a true family business as four of his team of six oven cleaning technicians are members of his family. Richard said: “People don’t realise that the more you use your oven the more debris and grease starts to build up and this can

affect its effi ciency. Remnants of food could still be lurking in the oven, hiding behind the panels, behind the fan cover or even dribbling over the heating elements in those hard to reach places.” The whole Ovenu process takes around three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. So call Richard today to arrange for that most hated cleaning job to be taken care of so that you don’t have to!

S andal Primary School set up their gardening club just over fi ve years ago. We were able

to buy equipment such as tools, gardening gloves, compost, seeds and pots with money from a grant from the Children`s University of Bradford to encourage science projects within our school. Our club runs after school on Monday evenings all year round and is attended by Year 4 pupils. We have a varied range of outdoor activities and indoor

garden related projects ( for inclement weather days!) that the children get involved with. Some of these include building and decorating birdboxes, minibeast hunts, pond dipping, planting up tubs and hanging baskets, sowing seeds, sowing and harvesting fruit and vegetables, weeding, making windchimes, making birdbaths, designing mosaic garden signs, scavenger hunts and decorating plant pots. After collecting the “Let`s Grow” vouchers from Morrisons supermarkets, we have been lucky enough to add further to our equipment and we also now have our very own greenhouse and garden shed.

Our “Garden Gang” also tend the main school garden, where each year group have their own raised bed to grow their own plants, fruits and vegetables. In previous years our young gardeners have worked closely with the Baildon In Bloom committee, helping to plant bulbs in Baildon village and getting our school ready for the judging of Baildon in Bloom. Our club also get involved each year with enterprise projects in school. Some of these have included growing daffodils and selling them to parents after school just before mothers day and making natural Christmas wreaths and cards which were sold at our Christmas Fair.

One of our favourite projects of the year is making the scarecrows for the annual “Wacky Scarecrow Walk” organised by the Baildon In Bloom committee, in which we came fi rst place in its initial year and second place in the second year of the competition. We are just starting work with an environmental group called “Habitat Heroes”, and are all very excited at the prospect of the different projects which, we as a school are going to be undertaking in our school grounds. Our “Garden Gang” have already sown a meadow full of wildfl owers near the new Sandal Childrens Centre. We are also planning our own school allotment, a sensory walkway through our woodland area and some living willow sculptures. Our young gardeners have also been asked to give a short presentation at the next Neighbourhood Forum meeting to be held at Sandal in July, detailing all the

varied gardening activities and projects that they undertake at school.

D ear Reader, in reading these stories, I hope that you will have as much fun

as I had writing them. I have tried to recapture the memories of my childhood and I hope that they will stir some of your memories and maybe let younger readers know about folks and places and happenings in the ‘20’s and ‘30’s. Please remember, these were the days of the ‘depression period’ after the General Strike of 1926, but in spite of all that, we managed to enjoy ourselves, ‘as lads always will’!

There’s been a reight lot of changes round t’West Riding, Not all of them have been for the best, And there’s not much you can do about them, only accept them, like the rest. But there is just one thing that you can do, That’s look back on how things used to be, And t’folks and t’places and happenings round Bradford, ‘bout 1923.

I lived in an industrial village, where a street, met a street, met a street, Hundreds of houses snuggled together, in rows all straight and neat. Houses full of friendly folk, and happy folk and miserable folk, Houses full of quiet folk, and lonely folk and nosey folk.

But folk who stuck together, whatever trouble might be, You could allus knock on someb’dys door and borrow a mashing o’ tea. Working day started reight early, In fact it started in t’middle

o’ neet. It started wi sound of Knocker-Ups clogs going clack, clickerty clack up street.

Knocker-Up round our way was called Sally, It was a woman who got ‘em all out o’ bed, She didn’t need a stick with all t’wires at end,her clogs would have woken the dead! I used to wonder why a woman did this job, She was out in t’rain, hail and sleet, I used to wonder who wakened her up, or if she stayed up all neet.

Soon t’mill buzzer ‘ud start to blow, you never heard such a row, It used to rattle all pots in t’cupboard, and all dogs ‘ud start to howl. And mill lasses ‘ud go pattering past,There’d be mothers and aunties and sisters,There’d be menders and blenders and perchers, and bobbing-liggers, doffers and twisters. Lifes blood o’ mill were these lasses, working from morning to neet, Allus laughing and joking, especially on Friday neet.

Then there’d be a lull till about half past eight, when school kids ‘ud go past in little huddles,Some running on t’walls, some playing tag, some jumping up and down in t’puddles. You’d hear them laughing and screaming in t’playground, till bell went, then they’d all troop inside, Quiet as mice; they daren’t say a word, or they got t’cane wrapped round their backside!

Once again it ‘ud be quiet and peaceful, Women washing up or scouring t’steps, When suddenly you’d hear t’sound of iron clad wheels, and iron clad hooves on ‘t setts.

Then it ‘ud start, the great procession, a colourful cavalcade, One after t’other they’d pull up t’street, owd hoss and cart parade. First one was always the milkman, with a reight little hoss pulling t’float, It ‘ud wander from one side o’

street to other, cadging sugar or a handful of oats. While Joe with his heavy milkcan, from door to door he’d sway, Shouting “Morning Luv, where’s your jug? Do you want a pint or a quart today?”

He’d no sooner gone round t’corner, when

a coil man ‘ud come along, Shouting “Coil, coil, two bob a bag.” In a sing song sort of song.

He had a great big black stallion, puffing

steam like a kettle on t’boil, No wonder it puffed, yon cart weighed a ton, piled high with its sacks o’ coil.

Then in’t distance you’d hear somed’dy shouting, and you knew it were Raggy Jones, You’d hear him coming nearer and nearer, shouting “Rags and bottles and bones.” He’d come round t’corner; you’ve never seen such a sight, He’d be sitting, hunched up on his cart, You couldn’t tell where he finished and his smelly old rags did start!

His hoss was t’oldest in Bradford, its back was bent like a bow, Its bones and its ribs all stuck out, And it moved reight painful and slow. Slow, we used to call it Lightening, but I’ve seen it move fast as well, That’s when it went past knackers’ yard, by gum it went like ‘ell!

Trouble with hosses wass hoss muck, you’d to watch where you put your feet. There were piles of it here and piles of it there and piles of it all over the street.

I once asked a chap why he collected it; he said “To put on mi rhubub and flowers.” I said “Rhubub, that’s a bit funny, we allus put custard on ours.”

Aye there’s been a reight lot of changes round Bradford, And I wanted young ‘uns to know,About folks and places and happenings Round Bradford, ‘bout seventy years ago.

“Trouble with hosses was hoss

muck, You’d to watch where you

put your feet, There were piles

of it here and piles of it there

and piles of it all over street.”

Our field workers sow courgettes in small pots in late March or early April, covered with fleece to protect them from frost.

The plants are often flowering within a month, when the covers are removed to allow pollinating insects in. Picking normally begins in mid June, and by July the courgettes are in full swing. Our challenge is to stay on top of the picking and avoid too many over-sized rejects.

Courgettes keep best in the bottom of your fridge. They keep their appearance for two weeks or more, but the flavour and nutritional value decline much more quickly. Eat them as soon as possible; old courgettes are tasteless but a really fresh one, straight from the plant, is fantastic.

Deep fried courgette flowers, stuffed with ricotta and spinach and eaten in batches as they come out of the pan, are one of the best things on earth, but you’ll need to grow them yourself. We would love to put courgette flowers in our veg boxes, but they are just too delicate to last the journey from the farm. Also, we might accidentally give you an unwelcome freebie… slugs love to curl up and take a snooze in the flowers.

Find some freshly-picked courgettes and try Jane Baxter’s recipes; the chocolate courgette cake has even been known to convert veg-averse children! Find these and other recipes in the Riverford Farm Cook Book.

Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to everyone. No-one wanted the business to get too big, so Guy teamed up with ‘sister’ farms who shared his passion and wanted to re-build the connection between grower and consumer.

River Nene was the first sister farm in 2005. From Sacrewell Lodge Farm near Peterborough, we deliver to homes throughout the east of England. River Swale followed in 2007, from Home Farm in North Yorkshire. River Swale supplies veg boxes across Yorkshire and the North
