Whakatāne DistrictCome stay and play in the sunshine capital of the North Island

On behalf of our District – Nau mai haere mai – welcome!

As a place to live, work and play, you’ll struggle to find better than the sunny Eastern Bay of Plenty.

There is always something new to see and do, even if you are a seasoned visitor to the area. Having lived here for over 50 years, I find it hard to choose a favourite activity or place to visit – there are so many!

If you enjoy the great outdoors, then kayak around Ōhiwa Harbour, surf and swim at Ōhope Beach, jump off the Port Ōhope Wharf, dive and fish, visit White Island (Whakaari) or Whale Island (Moutohorā), enjoy a round of golf, walk Toi’s track or bike along the award-winning Warren Cole Walkway, to name just a few.

The café and restaurant culture here is excellent too; you’re never far from a good flat white, bar meal or fine dining experience.

Make sure you book a few extra days here to enjoy all that is on offer.

Ka kite anō – until we see you again.

Tony Bonne Mayor, Whakatāne District

Key SpeakersTāmati Kruger

Tāmati Kruger (Tāneatua) is the Chairman of Tūhoe Te Uru Taumatua and was the Chief Negotiator for Ngāi Tūhoe’s Treaty of Waitangi settlement. He was also instrumental in securing the largest Treaty of Waitangi settlement to date for the Central North Island Iwi Collective. A recognised authority in Te Reo Māori

and customary practices, Tāmati has worked in tribal research and development for many years.

Sir Wira GardinerSir Wira Gardiner is the chair of the New Zealand Local Government Commission. Sir Wira has a long and distinguished military and public service career. He was a founding director of the Waitangi Tribunal and the founding chief executive of Te Puni Kōkiri, the Ministry of Māori Development.

Jacob KajavalaJacob Kajavala is the managing director of KFL – Kajavala Forestry Limited – a company started by his father, which he has grown into the largest of its kind in the country. Jacob has a degree in industrial chemistry and computing, but his initial career goal was to be a professional windsurfer, until a serious forestry accident left him all but

paralysed. The difficult road to recovery saw Jacob deskbound for some time, a period he used to gain business and finance training, which along with his innate determination, has helped him overcome a number of seemingly insurmountable business challenges. Jacob is from Tūhoe and Finnish descent.

Jenni GiblinJenni Giblin founded the Giblin Group for the public and not-for-profit sector, after a number of years spent working in the public sector as a policy advisor and strategy manager. Giblin Group is a specialist

consultancy assisting local and central government, iwi, hapū and Whānau to develop and deliver on their plans and projects. Giblin Group’s reputation has been built upon a track record of success in securing funding for social infrastructure projects across New Zealand.

Kirsti LukeKirsti Luke is Chief Executive of Te Uru Taumatua, Ngāi Tūhoe’s Tribal Authority. She holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB), is extremely knowledgeable about the tribe’s treaty claims, and was involved in the

establishment of Te Uru Taumatua.

Her goal is to build the organisation and the tribe’s economy and improve descendants’ quality of life. Her role includes recruiting management staff, building relationships with stakeholders and government agencies, developing policies to improve or co-ordinate options for housing, health and employment for Tūhoe and providing business recommendations to build up the tribe’s economy.

White Island Tours with PeeJays

15 The Strand Whakatāne

$199 Sitting 49 km off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island, this is one of the world’s most accessible live volcanoes. With the majority of the volcano sitting beneath the sea, it means we are able to disembark directly into the crater complex – no mountain climbing required. Experienced guides will lead you on a two-hour exploration of the inner crater, providing a fascinating commentary on the geology of the island as well as stories of attempts to mine sulphur. Along with volcanic and geothermal features, you will see the remains of the sulphur factory which have survived multiple eruptions since being abandoned in the 1930s.
