EMBA Experience

In addition to a new position within your company and degree program, you also have a family. How is your family dealing with the demands of your new schedule? With two children, a fast-paced job, an EMBA, finding the time for my wife, family, and friends is really challenging. Managing all these challenges successfully requires two things: 1) upfront align-ment: getting the support of your manager, your family, etc. 2) Time management and focus: You need to become a much better manager of your own time. Multi-tasking doesn’t really work, focusing on one thing at a time and allocating specific timeslots for work, EMBA, family is what currently has worked best for me.

How is the Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program helping you in your everyday job? The Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program has been and continues to be an amazing learning experience. The topics covered are up-to-date and relevant to today’s fast-paced business world. faculty is top-notch and the exchange of experiences and learnings between fellow students has been very enriching. The Program has allowed me to refine and polish up my knowl-edge of key business functions. In addition, the leadership mod-ules gave me a crucial edge in terms of managing and motivating teams. Finally, the one-on-one business coaching sessions have really enlightened me in terms of getting to know myself better and connecting the dots. And this has had a very positive impact on my everyday job.

Work history: Within the past 12 years, I have worked for 8 companies in 8 different countries and specialized in Project/Program Management, Customer Relationship Man-agement, Digital Marketing, and Business Intelligence/Analytics.

Hobbies/interests: water sports, running marathons, cooking, watching Game of Thrones.

favorite emBA class: Strategic Innovation, Business Strategies, Leadership in Organiza-tions.

Work history: 12 years in international mar-keting communications working on projects within the food, biotechnology, agribusiness industry.

Hobbies/interests: traveling to lesser-known destinations, watersports, sailing, swimming, and bicycling.

favorite emBA class: Management Ac-counting, Strategic Decisions in Operations, Finance in China.

How many global electives did you do during the EMBA? Which ones/which locations did you pick and why? I decided to do two global electives – Miami and Beijing. I chose Miami because I was very interested in developing a Latin American network for future business opportunities. Beijing was an obvious choice for me. In my opinion, understanding China and how to do business successfully there is a must for anyone in international business. I found all classes there fascinating, particularly “Finance in China” with Professor Qiao Liu, and the company visit, which was organized for us, brought everything together.

How did the knowledge/experience acquired through the Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program contribute to your non-profit career? What challenges did Kellogg-WHU help you over-come in your current position/sector?The Kellogg-WHU EMBA obviously gives you a great under-standing of how private sector thinks and how they work, but it was conversations with classmates at kellogg-WHU that offered me a real insight into how the private sector views public sector/nonprofit organizations. This is invalu-able in terms of knowing how to pitch our organization and ‘sell’ our story.

An unexpected but very positive experience from the kellogg-WHU emBA is the confidence that it has given me. Confidence because now that I have a better understand-ing of what the various departments need, I know how to talk to them and discuss what we need to do at a deeper level.

How did the Kellogg-WHU EMBA impact your personal life and career? If you want to reach your professional goals and live life, it is cru-cial you make the right choices. kellogg-WHU was the right emBA choice for me, both professionally and personally. This established program prepared me for my international job transition, enabling me to become a global leader in a constantly changing business environment. If so, how?I attended courses in Germany, Miami, Chicago, and Toronto, which provided the experience I needed to build a strong global network. Although my unforgettable kellogg-WHU journey is now over, i still keep in touch with my former classmates. We discuss best practice sharing, career transition, candidate search, introductions, human resources consulting, and other insightful topics.

Our Alumni on … Entrepreneurship and Career Development

Andreas, you changed careers and sectors while doing your EMBA, what influence did the Kellogg-WHU EMBA have on your career move? Kellogg-WHU greatly influenced my career change. most people who sign up for an mBA have the ambition to change their career in one way or another. Some are seeking promotion, some are looking for a career shift, and some just want to be better at what they do – but everyone wants a change. You ex-pect the change in advance. What you cannot expect is the force with which this change comes to you. A top level emBA like kellogg-WHU exposes you to so many interesting courses and people (professors and colleagues), it is cer-tain that no matter what you are currently doing, you will feel the urge to change and try something new.

ProfeSSor Tim CAlkinSClinical Professor of marketing at the kellogg School of management

You often travel to Germany to teach Kellogg-WHU EMBA students, what is the best thing about teaching in this program? The best thing about this program is the wonderful mix of students from all over the world, which makes the class discussions really entertaining for both me and the students. What I find fascinating with the Kellogg-WHU pro-gram is that you can really see how the concepts we teach play out in different parts of the world.

What do you like most about teaching in the Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program? I like to use cases because I think they bring everyone togeth-er around a single issue. one of the best parts of my job is when you bring in a case study to class and find out that there is a student who has a direct connection to it and can bring it to life. For me, it’s great because I keep learning more and more about the situation, the company and the play-ers. And I think it makes it valuable for the students because it’s not just a theoretical exercise, it is actually grounded in real business challenges that people are facing.

Background: BA from Yale; MBA from Harvard; consulting experience at Booz Allen and Hamilton; marketing experience at Kraft Foods for 11 years.

I write a blog on brand strategy: www.strongbrands.wordpress.com; I am an expert on Super Bowl advertising.

“All of our participants are managers who have been trained to get things done. What we want to accomplish with this program is to develop them into leaders who are able to apply advanced frame-works/tools of analysis and who have a broad perspective on things. This means that they should develop some sort of strategic foresight. As leaders, they not only have to select the right people who will get things done but more importantly they have to make important strategic

choices. And understanding choices and the assumptions around choices is a core objective of this program.”

Jürgen WeigAnd,Professor of economics and Academic director Post experience Programs at WHU – otto Beisheim School of management

Background: M.Sc. in Economics; Ph.D. in Finance, University of Bonn, Germany; work experience in the tax and audit industry. Co-founder of a small software company that we started about three years ago.

What has been your experience teaching the Kellogg-WHU EMBA students? Teaching the kellogg-WHU emBA students is probably the most intense, but definitely the most rewarding teach-ing experience. In other programs, professors usually chal-lenge students. With EMBAs this works both ways. I am always amazed at how much everybody in the classroom can learn from each other.

In your opinion, what is so unique about the Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program/partnership? In the world of business schools, the word “international” is likely one of the most (over)used buzzwords. Every school and program aspires to be perceived as such. However, there are only few that live up to this claim. The Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program is one of the very few truly international programs. And this shows basically across all dimensions. Being part of the EMBA Global Network is only one aspect. Having participants from all continents, professors from very different back-grounds, and cases and other real-life applications from all around the world leverages this partnership in a way that creates tangible benefits for everybody involved.

As an executive coach, what role does resilience play for EMBA students?Resilience, or in other words the capacity to handle adversity and setbacks constructively, is a compe-tency of growing importance for today’s managers. Developing resilience means to become more astute in steering your “inner world”, e.g. your attitude, emo-tions and thoughts. As the former CEO of Deutsche Bank, Alfred Herrhausen, once put it: “If you can’t lead yourself you will not be able to lead others.” The EMBA Program provides a structure that enables and fosters both professional and personal growth. In the Advanced Leadership Module each student works with a dedicat-ed executive coach over the full period of the program. These confidential sessions are supported by interactive workshops on relevant leadership topics to provide supporting models but also to challenge the participants to leave their comfort zone and grow.

The Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program regularly updates its leader-ship & personal development activities to reflect new trends in executive coaching. Managers today are expected to make collaborative decisions and provide inspiration to their teams. For that, they need to first understand and develop themselves. The Kellogg-WHU leadership & personal development team is there to guide you through this transformational journey.
