At the Library

At the Librarywith Glenda MulderJuly 13, 2016

What a fun week we are having! Tuesday retired LM teacher Brad Wilkening educated us about the Holocaust. Today (Wednesday) the Blank Park Zoo will be coming to entertain kids of all ages at 1:30 p.m. At 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, July 14, Pocahontas County Conservation Naturalist Corinne Peterson will visit us again; this time with “Pollinators” a program for the adults. Join us to learn more about pollinators, their role in nature, and how we can all help by planting pollinator gardens, providing nesting sites, and limiting pesticide use. All day Friday, of course, will be LegoMania! Whew! And to think, it’s my job to play like this. I am so lucky! And that’s not all! We’ve got a couple more fun programs coming soon. NY Times Best Selling author, Heather Gudenkauf will be here Monday, July 25 at 7 p.m. Heather will talk about her writing process, getting published, her books, and more! Her bio page includes this, “Heather Gudenkauf graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in elementary education, has spent her career working with students of all ages and continues to work in education as a Title I Reading Coordinator. Heather lives in Iowa with her husband, three children, and a very spoiled German

Shorthaired Pointer named Lolo. In her free time Heather enjoys spending time with her family, reading, hiking, and running. She is currently working on her next novel.” We will not have books for sale here. So please, feel free to bring in your own copies of any of her books to get her autograph! Laurens native Madyson Main will be here in August with a program detailing her trip on which she worked with children in an orphanage in Romania. More details later, but mark Saturday, August 6 on your calendar! Lion’s Club will return for a kids Vision Screening Wednesday morning July 20, 11 to noon. If you missed it the first time, now is your chance! “On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!” Kids’ Summer Reading is so much fun! It will continue every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. through July. This week, of course, is the zoo visit, which is fun for all ages. Rumor has it Mallory will be bringing an alligator (hopefully a baby!) a tiger salamander, Rudy the Rooster, and possibly a Guinea pig who is new to the zoo. We will be learning about animal athletes. Next week Meredith Allen will get the kids moving while teaching them about the importance of regular exercise. Pockets Full of Fun Puppet Show and workshop will be on July 27. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the best news; we have a new Children’s Librarian! Jeri Wenell retired a year ago after teaching kindergarten at

L-M for 29 years. After a year of being retired, Jeri decided she missed the kids and will fit perfectly into her new role as Children’s Librarian at our Library! Be sure to welcome Jeri when you see her.

It’s been an exciting week at the Earl Mackie Memorial Swimming Pool! On Monday we ended our first session of swimming lessons with a

celebratory jump off the diving board. Some were more excited than others showing of their best cannonball or flip! Pictures can be found on the pool’s

Facebook page (search Earl Mackie Memorial Swimming Pool). During the free swim during the afternoon on Saturday the pool had over

100 swimmers and the meal in Memory Lane was a success. If you didn’t get a chance to stop and swim on Saturday, the forecast looks

like it will be another great week to cool off in the pool. Donations can be dropped off at the City Hall if you missed the meal.

Food Safety in Power OutagesSummer storms bring the potential for power outages. How long is your freezer and refrigerator food safe? What foods can you keep and what needs to be tossed? That depends. If your freezer is full, your frozen food can remain safe for three days, but if it is on the emptier side and the temperatures are warm, it may not last as long. Here are some guidelines for what to keep and what to dispose of and what steps to take in this situation: Refrigerator: • Without power, refrigerators keep food cool for four to six hours. • Place block of ice in a container in the refrigerator to keep food cooler. • Do NOT open the refrigerator. Freezer: • If power is interrupted, do NOT open the freezer unnecessarily. • If the freezer is full and you keep the door closed, the food will stay frozen about two-three days. If the freezer is not full, group packages together so they stay cold longer. • If you anticipate the power going off, turn the freezer control to the lowest temperature setting. • Do not put food out on the snow-the sun may cause warming. After Power is Restored: • Check food temperatures. If food is above 40 degrees, you need to determine how long it was at 40 degrees. If food items were above 40 degrees longer than two hours, throw away the food. • For frozen foods, look for ice crystals and check temperature. • Throw away perishables such as meat and poultry leftovers. Do Not Refreeze: • Food that has thawed completely and is less than 40 degrees, especially meat, poultry and seafood. • Prepared, cooked foods such as pizza, hot dishes, stews and soups. • Foods with off colors or odors. • Creamed foods, pudding or other low-acid foods that have thawed. Safe to Refreeze: • Foods that still contain ice crystals. • Bread, cake, cookies, doughnuts. • Nuts, flour, cereal. • Raw meat and poultry that is 40 degrees or less. • Cheese, butter. For more information, contact the Crawford County ISU Extension and Outreach Office at 712-263-4697 or at [email protected]. You can also call ISU Extension and Outreach’s AnswerLine at (800) 262-3804 to talk directly with a Home Economist. AnswerLine hours are Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m.-noon and from 1:00-4:00 pm.

The Council discussed a written bid presented to purchase 416 Nelson St. for $1 from Ben and Holly Storms. No action was taken on the bid at this time.

After discussion about the safety and placement of private pools within the City, Swanson motioned to send the matter to Planning and Zoning for consideration; seconded by Kunickis. Ayes all; motion carried.

Newgard motioned to approve the contract extension for the Pocahontas County Emergency Medical Services Coordinator position; seconded by Kunickis. Ayes all; motion carried.

Potter motioned to accept the bids of Leo Goeders for the Owner Occupied Housing Program for the properties located at 528 Smith Street and 319 W Myrtle Street.

Potter noted that during the Pocahontas County Solid Waste Commission meeting last month that the County is very close to not accepting any corrugated cardboard in the trash. If corrugated is delivered to the transfer station, that individual community will be assessed additional costs. Smith stated that she has been discussing the matter with Pomeroy. She will bring a sample letter stating that the City will no longer accept any corrugated cardboard in the trash beginning September 1, to the next Council meeting. After approval, the letters will be included in the monthly utility bill. This will allow citizens time to put a plan in place for the recycling of corrugated cardboard.

Potter motioned to adjourn at 6:45 pm; seconded by Kunickis. Ayes all; motion carried.
