Kurt Cooper Zach Taylor CIVE 717 April 19, 2011 Introduction Local scour can be defined as degradation of river banks and/or bed that is localized to a specific area due to a sudden change in the parameters associated with the river (i.e. change in geometry, slope, flow, or placement of a structure, etc.). It is important to monitor local scour in order to minimize adverse effects on infrastructure and on the surrounding natural environment. Two types of local scour will be discussed in this presentation: bridge scour and jet scour.
