The year is winding down, and ev-eryone has begun to craft his or her New Year resolution; with mil-

lions of people hoping to get physically fit when this imaginary marker in time passes. Howver, we all know that not many people actually stick with it! I know I have said this before but I can’t stress it enough. Being physically fit means being happier, healthier and not to mention, looking good which is an added plus!

Instead of waiting and making a ‘promise’ to get fit or going through diets upon diets with little to no result - just make a lifestyle change altogether. By preparing yourself before all the hoopla begins with holiday dinner and copious amounts of eggnog or pumpkin spice lattes, you are setting yourself up for success. Plus knowing your limit means you can always eat within it.

Next is the oh-so important exercise that comes along with attaining your OWN version of a beach bod- not just what the magazines try to push on you. Fitness Etc. is just the place start and continue your fitness journey. It’s where I’ll be getting my work out on, so join me in the movement to a better healthly life. If you have moderate health and you can move your body, don’t take it for granted. Get physical.

Happy Holidays!

Share your fitness journey with me! We can talk tips, and tricks! [email protected]

“Every one has insecurities & flaws but coming to terms with them and learning how to work around them to better our selves… - brings out beautiful things from the inside when we dance.”

Self- Expression is something we all yearn to do. In every choice we make with what we wear, the things we do, how we choose to be seen as individuals- it all comes to be because we are expressive beings. For Hayley Paone Artistic Director and owner

of iNhayle dance studio located in Ancaster Ontario, creative is who she is.

“I’ve always been artsy and creative so a lot of my hobbies go hand in hand with my dance career today.” Instilling the value of constant progression in her classroom, articulating to her students, “iNhayle is all about personal growth and being your very best but also pushing your limits to be the best. It’s not only about getting to where you want to be, as a dancer and individual, but more about the journey and how you got there.” iNhayle is the perfect place for any person who wants to unleash their creative being through movement or anyone who dreams of becoming the dancer they envision-here you will prosper.

Offering dancers uninterrupted attention along with superb competitive training Hayley believes, “being an artist isn’t a choice... I think its something we possess inside and its almost impossible to get rid of so it always kind of shines through. Life inspires me to create…”

Something that iNhayle studio hopes to push others to do. Inviting dancers “to feel free, making them stronger, more confident” shaping them to excel through the art of movement. As a dancer herself, Hayley is an inspiration to watch and I’m sure is a pleasure to learn from, you can see the genuine spirit she possesses and shares with all who enter her studio.

Jon Abrams started playing guitar about six years ago and began by learning covers until he grew sick of learning other peoples’ songs and started to cre-

ate his own. He believes that you have to write some bad songs before you find your groove. The songs for Abram’s EP, Beautiful You Are, were recorded both in Toronto and Nashville, which was like a dream come true. The album was released at a very successful fund-raiser filled with Abram’s supporters. In fact, almost

everything that he has earned from his music so far has gone to charity. He donates generously to a variety of charities including the Milton District Hospital, United Way, and the Cancer Walk. Abrams chooses charities that give back to the Milton community. The response to Abram’s musical endeavours from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and he is grateful to have a job that allows him to pursue this passion.

Following a busy Western Canadian tour, Brooklyn born, Toronto raised, jazz and blues sensation Shakura S’Aida stopped

in to chat with Localiez on her way back to the GTA.

Although the 2012 Maple Blues Award nominee is often representing Canada abroad, the international artist says she has long shared a deep connection to the city she calls home.

Shakura describes a “diversity that comes from culture” in the city which is amplified throughout the history, art and lifestyle of its residents, and is a point of pride for Canadian artists like herself.

“I definitely think that my goals have been more attainable living in Toronto. My idols, they were my mentors,” she explains.

While in high school, a teacher encouraged her to pursue singing professionally and the candid, multilingual diva says she has been living her dream ever since.

During her stay at home, Shakura performed at the Brampton Global Jazz & Blues Fest and the Markham Jazz Fest this August. Check her out at ww.shakurasaida.com and listen to her sensational voice and classy blues tones.

It’s not everyday you get picked out of a crowd to join the handsome, chiseled faces of Tommy Hilfiger’s male model rooster. It isn’t often that this same person is also an actor, music maker and fashion de-

signer, but this is all true when it comes to Sam Sarpong; one of the fashion world’s most popular faces.

What Sam thought was the luck of the draw- getting picked up and signed by Tommy- turned out to be nothing of the sort. Since his debut with Tommy Hilfiger his popularity has blown up across the globe, and not just as a model showcasing for top brands such as Louis Vuitton or Gucci, but as a one man brand; acting, designing, television hosting, mentoring, just to name a few. Sam has his hands in all the entertainment pots. “I’m not just gonna be a model, I’m not just gonna be an actor, I’m not just going to be a television host… I’m gonna use all these things that I’m doing and brand myself.”

Soon enough you’ll find Mr. Sarpong in the role of brand ambassador for the up-in-coming fashion line called 466/64 (four-double six, six-four). Created to sustain and promote social activist and humanitarian Nelson Mandela, and his efforts to continue his legacy- and here I am dumbstruck

sam sarpong

25localiez

Page 26: Localiez

at the thought of this amazing honour. All in all Sam lives “moment to moment” and says that his life is “A true blessing, and it’s something I don’t take for granted.”

Walking down the runway and making media appearances isn’t enough to keep this UK born mogul happy. Sam shares his time mentoring kids enrolled in the Boys and Girls Club of America where he offers them positive and uplifting guidance. In his teens, up until this very day, Sam has never drank alcohol, or smoked a cigarette and he “…never missed a day of school for 12 years.” Making him stand out as an exemplar role model for youth and adolescents by my books.

Come 2013 Sam will be touring around the world – and in this case I’m not talking about his R&B Hip Hop group

The League, in fact this tour is set on a different stage. Sam will be visiting high school’s to impart some life advice with teens. Advising them to always “…keep on going and never give up… it may sound cliché but it’s the key to where I am and that’s the key to where I am going and that no matter what - you have to believe in yourself.”

Sam is a true Go Getter, working “constantly to do more and improve” himself, unshaken by the daily grind. With a zest and passion for life that you can feel whenever he’s around, it’s obvious that is Sam is going places, and if you don’t believe me, you’ll have to find out for yourself by tuning into his televised journey the “Life of an Entertainer”.

Despite the non-committal and unruly weather, don’t let your mood be brought down over the holidays or into the new year! In my experiences, the best way to combat a glum winter attitude is to keep busy. Below is a list of tried, tested and true ideas that I use and a couple from loyal Localiez readers.

1) If you can’t be it, join in for some winter fun!

This idea depends on your comfort level. But why not get some friend together and have a snowball fight or a snowman building competition? Worried about attendance or complainers? Pick up a bottle of creamy liqueur to add to your guests’ hot chocolate for extra warmth and laughs.

2) Up those endorphins!

Whether you choose a traditional gym workout or a “special” home workout, get your heart pumping to avoid gaining the dreaded holiday pounds. Building strength and stamina will not only have you looking good, but feeling good as well.

3) Find “Me” Time

Be sure to factor in time to sit back and relax. Schedule a day to finish the book you started weeks ago and take that nap in the middle of the day. Not good at sitting around?

Spend time doing something that you never seem to have time for, like organizing your finances, crawl space or that pesky drawer that makes you cringe every time you go in it.

4) Host a movie or UFC night!

Getting friends together is a sure fire way to

increase your positive vibes and put a smile on you and your friends’ faces. Whip up some drunken hot chocolate, or work through a couple bottles of wine beer to keep your guests’ palettes moist.

5) Focus your searches

The next time you find yourself aimlessly sitting in front of your computer, try and focus your search. This may mean researching a topic that your want to know more about or finding fun, and ideally inexpensive, ways to show your loved ones that you’re thinking about them.

6) Work on that Bucket List!

Be sure to live every day to its fullest, because we never know how many days we have left! A piece of advice that has always resonated with me is, “try to do something that you’re afraid of each day”. This sounds like a big undertaking, yet last week I killed a spider without sucking it into my vacuum—and that was scary enough for me.

7) Pay it Forward

Turn any day into a “Random Act of Kindness” sort of day. It always amazes me how good it makes me feel to put a smile on a strangers face. I often think people hesitate on this idea because they think ‘giving costs too much’. Yet, holding a door or returning something that a person has dropped is free, and could mean the world to someone.

8) Donate

This could be a donation to a local charity or buying a meaningful gift for a village in a less fortunate community, such as a “rainwater harvest tank”. Again, this can sound

scary and expensive, but it’s not! By doing some research your can donate a specific gift for as low as $12, or contribute to a larger project. The options are endless!

9) Look Good, Feel Good

Stop saving those “good” clothes for a special occasion and find an excuse to wear them

out. Spending an extra ten minutes on your hair, or lining up your chin-strap can add an extra pep in your step on those dark days to come.

10) Get comfortable in your own skin

This is especially important for you single ladies and gents, because confidence is one of the most attractive qualities for both men and women. I suggest, taking time to do things on your own, and giving yourself time to figure out your priorities and goals. Looking inwards should help you understand what you are looking for in a future partner. In a relationship? By knowing yourself, you can decide if you are being the best partner you can be.

Be sure to hit me up on FB at Alexis AskAnything or via email at [email protected]. I can’t wait to hear about your experiences beating the winter blues, and remember to keep those questions coming! Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Your girl,

Since birth Ericka Hunter has been a creative person “I’ve always been very animated and artistic. From the time I was a toddler, if I wasn’t eating, I was

singing, if I wasn’t sleeping, I was dancing. I have always had the desire to perform!”

Ericka is a performer in a class of her own possessing a healthy blend of entertainer and artist. Ericka has had roles in hit Broadway musicals such as Rock of Ages, Lion King and the NBC television series Smash.

With all of her success, Ericka remains with both feet on ground. If you ask her what inspires her the most she will admit it’s when her friends and family request her music. Ericka explains, “I was talking to my niece, and she asked when I am sending her more music”.

This January Ericka will be performing her own original songs at The Elizabeth Manley and Friends fundraising event, happening in her hometown of Ottawa, Ontario in support of teen mental health. You can also look out for her single due early 2013.

Ericka hopes to leave behind a legacy of music that will live beyond her time. From the moment your listen to or watch her perform, you’ll observe her effortless and enthusiastic delivery, convincing you that Ericka was destined for stardom.

Recently, Marquee Steak-house & Piano Lounge has been described as “the place

where flame meets rustic elegance and nostalgic charm, destined to become a Milton landmark”. Its kitchen, nurtured by acclaimed Chef Serdjo Lakich, is a galley devoted to the purity of ingredients and fla-vours. Rich, time consuming sauces

are the perfect accent to their prized steaks. And the seafood is purpose-fully simple as to only enhance the natural flavours of the ocean.

Here, guests are reminded that the art of service has never been lost — its dining room is lead by industry professionals chosen for their years of experience in other top flight establishments.

Courteous, knowledgeable and without pretense, they exude care and attention to detail.

“I’m very proud when someone mentions elegance and rustic to describe Marquee. We took great care in opening a beautiful location whilst respecting the town’s history,” says co-owner Diana Lakich. As the person responsible for the interior

design, Ms. Lakich was adamant about incorporating the town’s heritage into the business. Indeed, her sensibility is showcased by a grand wall of reclaimed barn wood running the length of the restaurant — both as nod to Milton’s roots and as a reminder of our closeness to food.

Tucked in a corner, a lone pianist seemingly has the ability to stop time. As music fills the evening air, guests are taken back to a time when the world never felt the need to “get up and hurry”. Sensual and deeply satisfying — the perfect pairing of food, music and service is the ultimate achievement at Marquee Steakhouse.

Great food. Great ambience. Great wine. It’s your turn to play.

On Sunday, December 2nd, the Milton Stags Basketball league held their second annual opening ceremonies to kick off the official basketball season. The Milton Sports Center was jam-packed with excited players, parents and community members showing their support. Master of Ceremonies, Dave “Titus” Smith, started off the morning by introducing Coach Mike Borlongan, followed by Mayor Krantz and MPP Lisa Raitt. Immediately after, an energized procession of Milton Stags players, ranging from 4 years of age right up to the teen REP’s, entered the gym. There was an amazing backdrop of music. In addition to that, there were a few special surprises for the players and fans alike. The Raptor mascot was on hand and not only provided humour, but really got the crowd cheering. There was also a wonderful performance by the “Dance Class”. The “Raptor Dance Pack” also attended the festivities; the crowd was blown away by their incredible talent. At this time of year, a lot of shoppers don’t im-mediately think of buying a book for that spe-cial someone’s stocking. Perhaps they are con-

cerned that the person won’t be interested in the book that they select. However, I can tell you that avid read-ers are always up for trying something new. Go ahead and surprise them… but if you are still feeling timid, here are some great holiday recommendations below!

If Santa has already given you Sarah’s Key try

Some Girls, Some Hats, and Hitler: A True Love Story Rediscovered

Trudi Kanter

So many stories about Europe during World War II have been published that it is sometimes difficult choosing which ones to read or just how many. As of late, the trend in publishing seems to be toward more unique stories chronicling the events from a different angle. This is one such tale. Originally published in the 80’s and recently rediscovered, it is the tale of Trudi and Walter two industrious young people in Vienna.

Trudi is a fashionista although that word doesn’t do justice to the glamorous and elegant hats that she designs for her wealthy clientele. She lives the high life until things take a turn for the worse. With an enormous amount of foresight, Trudi urges her family to escape. Her efforts and some fortuitous twists of fate enable her parents and her husband to survive.

This memoir will communicate the events of the time to readers in a more light-hearted method than most comparable WWII accounts. The war serves as a backdrop to Trudi’s everyday tales of fashion, love, and various flirtations along the way.

Book clubs will enjoy this story among others. For those clubs wishing to pursue a WWII study, Localize recommends Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum, My Enemy’s Cradle by Sara Young, Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak as wonderful reading choices among Some Girls, Some Hats, and Hitler by Trudi Kanter.

If The Forgotten Garden was on her list last year, try

The Secret Keeper

Kate Morton

Kate Morton, much like Santa’s elves, is constantly

working to bring you more delightful treats. The Secret Keeper, her 4th novel, follows in the traditions of her previous works. Full of secrets (obviously!) and family deceptions, The Secret Keeper will enchant you.

As a teenager, Laurel Nicholson witnesses a shocking crime that changes everything she knows about her mother. Now, fifty years later Laurel realizes that her last chance to unravel the family mystery is about to pass as her mother is celebrating her ninetieth birthday. The story will dazzle you with wartime romance while you attempt to decipher the exact course of events that lead up to the crime that haunts Laurel to this day.

The Secret Keeper is an enjoyable and easy-to-read novel. Although predictable at times, the characters are intriguing and the narrative enjoyable. Perfect for readers looking to kick back by the fireplace this holiday season.

If The Hunger Games was under your tree last year, try….

Divergent by Veronica Roth

This little elf cannot say enough about Divergent by Veronica Roth - a truly fantastic holiday find! Divergent takes place in a Dystopian Chicago. Similarly to The Hunger Games, children undergo a rite of passage... in this case, a choosing of their faction. Factions are similar to tribes but these groups are based on their dominating virtue - Dauntless (Bravery), Erudite (Intelligence), Amity (Harmony), Abnegation (Selflessness), and Candor (Truth). Beatrice, the protagonist struggles to make her selection and when she does things only get more difficult. As she attempts to determine who she really is, the secret that she keeps threatens her entire world. Action packed and thought-provoking Divergent is the total package - throw in some gift wrap and a bow and who could want anything more!!! Oh yeah, did I mention there is also a romance???

Rumour has it that this superb read will be moving to the silver screen in 2014 with Shailene Woodley as Tris.

Stayed tuned for the next issue revealing more exciting reads from Simon & Schuster and Harper-Collins.

Happy Reading!

The Raptor mascot was

on hand and not only provided humour, but really got the crowd cheering.

There was also a wonderful performance by the “Dance Class”. The “Raptor Dance Pack” also performed at the festivities; the crowd was blown away by their incredible talent. Immediately after the ceremonial “tip-off ”, the U11 Atom boys team commenced a game against the Oakville Venom. At the end of a exciting game, the Stags took home the win.
