From the editorWith the summer drifting away – I hope that autumn brings some welcome sunshine before winter sets in! Despite the weather the local community has succeeded in putting on a good show – whether at the picnic in the park, the pirate fun day or hospital fete, all events went ahead regardless of the weather forecast.
September does not look to slow down either with the Burnham Folk Fest at the start of the month, art and craft exhibitions and displays and events to raise money for McMillan Cancer Support - it never stops.
Tickets are available for sale for the BOSH performance of Pinafore Pirates at the Princess Theatre via the box office – be sure to support this new youth group in the town. It also promises to be a good show, if interested in being involved in the youth theatre contact the Princess Theatre.
I personally have had a “Staycation” this summer – but have made an effort to take my children to all the local activities taking place, and we have never had such a hectic school holiday. Enjoy Septembers edition and do keep sending in your editorial by email.

The Friends of Marine Cove with the support of Sedgemoor
District Council have been busy in
the garden so far this summer – despite the weather. The sunset beds were planted in June by community gardener Jacqui Strong and a team of volunteers. Ongoing work had been happening in the garden on a Saturday mornings between 0930 and 1130 where volunteers are welcome to come along and chat or get involved with the jobs required. The Friends of Marine Cove are hoping to introduce a terraced bed in the garden over the next couple of weeks.
The Dreamscheme and the
volunteers have been sanding some of the benches in the garden and sealing them.
Plans are being made for a Christmas Carols by Candlelight event and also for the events programme for 2013 – if you would like to share some ideas then contact the Friends Group via www.marinecove.org.uk on the contacts page.
If you would like to attend one of the History Walks on Thursday 30th August or Thursday 27th September tickets are available in advance from the Information Centre for £2.50, all proceeds from the walk hosted by local historian and author Bob Thomas goes to the Friends of Marine Cove to assist with the maintenance and future events in the garden.
Friends of marine Cove
Just months after its refurbishment, Marine Cove Gardens has received a prestigious Green Flag Award for the fi rst time and Apex Park has received the Green Flag Award for the sixth year running. The Awards are a sign to visitors that the parks are well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities. It is with thanks to Sedgemoor’s Parks Offi cers, Dog Wardens, its Clean Surroundings Team as well as the support from the Friends of Marine Cove Gardens and Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group that both parks are in tip top condition for their wide range of visitors. In 2012, 1424 parks and green spaces nationwide will fl y either the Green Flag or Community Award.
Burnham Bowling Club is approaching the end of the outdoor season, but don't let that stop you; get a head start ready for 2013. If you are thinking of taking up a new hobby, or wanting to keep active, you will fi nd bowling a friendly sport. Free coaching is available without the need to become a member fi rst.
There are still plenty of friendly games scheduled for the remainder of the season, as well as league matches, but also ample opportunity just to bowl casually amongst friends. As we are now into the second half of the season, there is a reduction in fees for the remainder of this year. For membership details contact
the Men's Secretary, Alan Lane (792508) or the Ladies' Secretary, Anne Richards (782890). For coaching information, or to arrange coaching, please contact Ellis Davies (760544). We also play indoors from early October to late March. For details including indoor membership, contact June Bridges (781706).

I can probably guess what you’re thinking… .a Choral Society; they’re stuffy and very formal. Well, you’re wrong. Although I must admit that’s exactly what I thought, but I can assure you we’re a friendly and relaxed group of people who just happen to sing choral music, which is sometimes serious, but there’s a lot of laughter whilst learning it.
Our programme for next season:- Saint Saëns –
Christmas Oratorio, Vivaldi’s – Gloria, and excerpts from Les Misérables. We’re a mixed choir, so ladies and gentlemen are welcome. Especially those Tenors, Baritones and Basses. If you’re not sure which you are, don’t worry we’ll help. Come on don’t be shy. There are no auditions, and although reading music is an advantage, it’s not necessary. There is no excuse because the fi rst 3 weeks are FREE, so you can try before you buy, so to speak. Now what have you got to lose? For more information contact Mr Bev Hearn on 01934 732041. The Dreamscheme launched its summer programme on Wednesday 25th July with a task day in Marine Cove sanding down the benches. The Dreamscheme is a community based initiative run by volunteers. The young people undertake community tasks in reward for points, which can be redeemed against activity days.
The points are worked out on the amount of hours the young people spend volunteering on projects - 1 hour = 10 points. The fi rst year has proven very successful and to celebrate the hard work the young people put into their community an incentive has been introduced for those who achieve Gold status (600 points or 60 hours volunteering). Those who achieve the
Gold Award are now presented with a certifi cate, Dreamscheme hoodie and gold Dreamscheme badge - these items cannot be bought but are award in recognition of their efforts. The fi rst members to receive the Gold award
badge and hoodie were Thomas Jefferies, Ellis Crennol, Joe Clark and Joseph Strong - hopefully this will inspire the other members to continue their hard work.
The Dreamscheme have recently been successful in obtaining funding for the
purchase of a Badge Maker. The idea being that the Dreamscheme will set up a youth enterprise to fund the activities they undertake during the year, but we are hoping that local groups will use the Dreamscheme to purchase items such as 45mm badges/magnets/keyrings or mirrors. The items can have a design of your choice. For more information contact Jacqui Strong 07864 051315.
We are looking for new members to join the Dreamscheme if you are aged between 7 and 14 years of age get in touch with John Alexander [email protected] for a membership form. We are continually looking for community projects to undertake throughout the year and volunteers to help oversee the activities or with some of the management decisions.

Dance and Fitness Classes for Children and AdultsFree trial classes
For more details please call Victoria on 07701 045993
or visit: www.dancefitsomerset.co.uk
DanceFit, in Love Lane, Burnham-on-Sea, is very pleased to announce that we are expanding our timetable. Alongside our existing classes, we are now running RAD ballet for children aged 2 ½ right up to adult ballet. Ballet is the foundation for all dance, and is a lovely way to get youngsters dancing, it also is a fantastic form of fi tness for adults, combining graceful moves with exercises that will really tone your whole body, you do not need any prior dance experience.
We are also adding the popular Musical Theatre to our timetable, a chance for all budding performers to gain knowledge in all three disciplines of dancing, singing and acting. We will run a junior class for children aged 6-10 years and a senior class for children aged 11 years upwards. This class has proven to be very popular at our annual summer school “Build a Show in a week” with over 20 children aged 5-10 years working together to create a production of “The Pirates of The Currybean,” which was the performed on the fi nal day at The Princess Theatre.
We are very excited to now be able to offer children that attend a DanceFit class the opportunity to take part in The Arts
Award, alongside taking their dance exams. This enables children to gain nationally recognised qualifi cations at different levels from bronze through to gold that can help them throughout life.
In addition to our existing Zumba and Adult Tap classes we are now offering more throughout the week, with new evening Zumba classes and also brand new beginner adult tap classes.
We are hoping to help break the world record for the most tap dancers dancing the same routine in multiple venues across the country and raise money for Children In Need, so if you have always fancied trying tap dance now is a great time to get involved, we run classes for children aged 3yrs up to adults with no upper age limit!!
For more information on any of our existing classes such as street dance for boys and girls, tap, modern, Pilates and Latin dance or any of our new classes please ring Victoria on 07701 045993 or email [email protected], you can also visit our website www.DanceFitSomerset.co.uk All classes are FREE to try!

SRYP has featured in a national newspaper in a report about the impact of the recession on young people. The story in the Independent on Sunday highlights the difficulties for young people living in the countryside who are hit harder by fuel costs, transport cuts, bad career advice and few training options.
Triston Watkins, of Burtle, who is involved in the charity’s Moped Loan Scheme, was featured in the national paper. He said: “I live 10 miles from Bridgwater College in a pretty isolated village. Transport is an issue. There is not much really to do there. I haven’t seen a bus in three years. Those we have are for schools".
“I used to cycle to Glastonbury along the canal path about seven miles most mornings. You end up tired
before the day has started. I got a moped at 16. Once you have got a mode of transport it’s alright, but if you haven’t you are pretty stuck."
A report recently released by the Commission for Rural Communities stated that there were a number of issues related to young people living in rural areas including access to education, work or training .
The number of NEETS, young people not in education, employment or training has increased significantly in those live in rural areas.
The work of Somerset Rural Youth Project is even more vital at a time when so many cuts are being made and young people are struggling to access means of training.
The charity runs a Moped Loan Scheme, which offers young
people the opportunity to have their own transport. o
Other programmes run by the charity enable young people to gain accreditation or training. The Rural Employment And Learning (REAL) team, offers employment training, CV writing skills, a job club and many other life skills to help prepare young people for the future.
The Green Activities Team offers young people the opportunity to undertake work for organisations including the National Trust and Natural England, where they are given accreditation for their efforts, again helping them have something extra for their CVs.
For more information on the charity you can visit the website at www.sryp.org.uk or call 01278 722100.

Are you having a dilemma over what type of computer to buy? In this issue I hope to explain the pros and cons of different types of computing device.
One of the fi rst things is to decide is where you would like to use the computer. For example, the traditional desktop computer is usually based in a spare room, so the obvious choice if you don’t have this kind of space is to buy a notebook (laptop) or tablet (iPad) which can be used in any room in the house, or even away from home. The unfortunate thing about notebook computers is that they are not as robust as the desktop and can often develop problems, a common one being damage caused by heat. Laptops are more likely to sustain damage due to spillages, or even being dropped, so their portable nature can be detrimental. On the other hand, their portability has to be considered a major benefi t.
For those of you who do a lot of typing (i.e. creating documents or long e-mails), comfort should also be considered. Tablets can be very tiring when used for long periods, and the notebook computer can also cause posture problems. For those of you who spend hours on a computer, I would normally advise buying a desktop computer,
as the seating position allows the best comfort long term. Desktop computers are generally very reliable, can be expected to last for years and have the best performance versus money spent.
However, many people just want a device for viewing information and sending the occasional email - for this a tablet is highly recommended. The “touch” screen can be easier to use than a keyboard or mouse and their lightweight nature allows easy access in all situations, from being at home to travelling in an aircraft. My father was one has found the iPad to be brilliant, having suffered a stroke he was unable to use a traditional keyboard, but found the touch screen invaluable. Games, books and fi lms can be downloaded to the device whilst at home, and then transferred to the tablet for use anywhere. A tablet, such as the iPad, is not strictly a computer, so there are downsides. It will not run some traditional computer software, and it does not allow devices such as digital cameras to be directly connected, so most people are advised to own both a computer and a tablet, so that all functions can be performed on one or other of the machines. The Pirate Fun Day held on Sunday 12th August was a great day, well attended and
enjoyed by the local community and visitors alike.
I have to say running Pirate School was great fun and getting Captain Stupid (aka John Alexander of the
Dreamscheme) and Captain Bluebeard (Peter Burridge-Clayton) soaking wet with water bombs that were made by Tanya and the volunteers – this was just part of the afternoons activities. With facepainters, balloon modelling and games – it was a great combination.
Thanks to Louise Parkin of the Pavillion for purchasing the goody bags and prizes for the children and to the Lions for ensuring the afternoon
went off with a swing with the assistance of Jonathan and Micheal. The afternoon may never have got off the ground without the co-ordination of Ian Jefferies – with his ships mate TJ helping with the posters.
All the volunteers who were involved would like to consider future events on the beach of a similar nature, so if you are interested either drop me an email via local reach or leave your details with Biars.

Within Your LimitsSeptember: A time when the harvest homes are upon us and good times should be had. For parents of
young people who will want to experience perhaps their fi rst opportunity to visit a licensed event, PLEASE
make sure you know where they are and who they are with. At risk of sounding like a really crotchety old man, just check on your alcohol store at home. Many of the problems that we experience in the community with young people and antisocial behaviour is alcohol related. We’ve probably all done it but drunken teenagers cause untold misery to the community and it sometimes gets them into extraordinarily dangerous situations.
As the evenings start to draw in, stay vigilant and tell us what you’re concerned about. The safest communities are those who are strongest. We are stronger together. roger TOlleY - Inspector

Home bakers are called to get their teeth into British Food Fortnight and start perfecting their entries for the Great Burnham Bake-off : One cake, large or small, iced or naked, rich or fruity is all that's required to enter. The organisers hope that families will dig in to their favourite recipes or try something new and get practicing over the summer holidays. The contest will take place on Saturday 29th September as part of the fi rst Burnham on Sea Food and Drink Festival.
Anyone who has ever licked a spoon can stand a chance to win the Great Burnham Bake-off trophy, to be presented by Emma Britten on the day. The competition might be tough, as several well-known fi gures in the town have already caused a stir in public meetings and street parties with fl uffy
Victoria Sandwiches and sticky gingerbread. So we know that cake is a serious business in
Burnham and we are not afraid of a challenge! Alex Turco of contest sponsors, Positive Wealth Creation Ltd, says "Competition is Good, especially if it involves cake! Baking brings out the best
in us and this competition should be seriously good fun."
The Burnham on Sea Food and Drink Festival will take place in the Princess and the Baptist Hall from 10am to 5pm on the last Saturday in September, with Side Orders happening at venues all over town throughout the weekend. Bake-off entries should be presented by 2pm and will be returned to the baker after the judging for sharing or showing-off. The day will be a celebration of food and drink produced in and around Burnham, with local brewers, cider-makers and food-producers bringing their best to the heart of the town. Entry to the festival will be free, with tastings and workshops for all they family. For more information go to www.burnhamonseafoodfestival.org and look out for posters at participating shops and restaurants.

Unless you are keeping some heads for seed next year, keep removing all dead flower heads to prolong flowering, only save the strongest seed heads.
Pansies, violas, wallflowers, primroses, auriculas and polyanthus can all be planted out in the borders this month for spring decoration.
Thin out old shoots and tie in new shoots of climbing roses.
This is also the month to plant anemones, crocuses, montbretia, narcissi, chionodoxas, scillass, etc. but not tulips. It is best to only plant snowdrops after flowering when they are still green.
FruIT
Gooseberries can be pruned this month. Fruit is produced on one year old wood. The object of pruning is to keep the bushes as vigorous as possible and to try and get a plentiful supply of strong and healthy young growth. Fruit is also formed on spurs produced on the older wood but they will be smaller.
If you cannot get your bushes to produce young wood each year some of the old wood must be retained but should be cut back to two or three buds.
Try to keep the bushes open in the centre to help the fruit ripen

Saturday, 11 August saw our 100,000 customer come through our doors. Mr David Jamieson of Wells and his fi ancée, Mary White, from Bridgwater, were surprised, if a little overwhelmed, to be greeted at the Centre by our Mayor, Ken Smout, with a bottle of champagne, fl owers and a Burnham on Sea Bristol Blue paperweight. This was the couple’s fi rst visit to BiARS although they said they come regularly to the town when the sun is shining. They were very impressed with what is on offer and the range of expertise we are able to show. Who knows who the 200,000 customer will be but other customers in at the same time were also offered a little champagne as a gesture of goodwill.
The Centre is now functioning
very successfully both on a tourist and a local level. More and more local people are coming in, not just for the up to date bus timetable, but to see what events are being staged in and around Burnham on Sea. Advertising of events is placed in our monthly diaries (we display four months at a time) so that customers can see what is on offer on a particular day. We also try to fi nd out free events in the area as it can be so costly on holiday. So, if you have an event coming up, let us know and we will advertise it for you in our diaries.
Besides the usual tickets for The Weston Playhouse, Seaquarium, Burnham Speedway, Berry’s Coaches we are currently offering the National Gardening Show at the Bath & West showground. All the tickets
we sell are at a discount to the customer and we receive a small commission. We also have discounts for Wookey Hole, RAF Yeovilton and Puxton Park. So if you are planning to go to any of these during the summer come in to save some money.
Our success is due, in no small part, to the happy band of volunteers who open the Centre from 10 am to 4 pm, 7 days a week. If you would like to be part of this success, come in and talk to us or telephone 01278 787852 when someone will be pleased to tell you what volunteering entails. In the meantime, thank you for your support. A seaside resort needs to have a thriving, forward thinking Information Centre and we think we are managing to ensure this continues.

With social services experience, she will have in depth information about care providers and can effectively “hold your hand" throughout the whole process.
When important decisions need to be made in relation to your change of health and lifestyle, it would be more advantageous to be prepared instead of dealing with it in a crisis situation. She has also set up The Rainbow Link which offers discounted conveyancing for selling property, estate agency service and more importantly, fi nancial advisors who can provide long term care advice.
Karen is offering to provide free talks to any club or organisation regarding the services she offers in the hope that the preparation process can help to achieve a more smoother transition. Please call 07765 401384 or e-mail [email protected].

The groups' aims:To fi nd common ground between every single-issue interest group in Highbridge.
Everywhere the message seems to be the same; we don't want our town given over to fl ats and maisonettes. Some of the strongest support comes from owners and residents of the existing fl ats who moved into a reasonably well balanced mix of a town and don't want to see the balance eroded.
Infrastructure concerns everyone; the lack of school places, jobs and medical facilities is at a critical level Our youngest members point to the lack of affordable activities for fourteen to sixteen year olds.
We want to support everyone wherever possible.Cllrs Helen Groves and Joe Leach are involved, helping to navigate the planning process. Anyone is welcome.
Chairperson Dawn Molloy said: "...it is the hope of the group
to make the best of the town's development; supporting positive ideas to rebuild our infrastructure and taking action to restore the community we once had in Highbridge."
Tina Gray, the Vice Chair: "Together we will stand up and fi ght for everyone who is unable to use their voice; especially the young and elderly".

Lynda Bellingham asks Somerset residents to help beat dementiaActress and presenter Lynda Bellingham is urging Somerset residents to put on their walking shoes and support Memory Walk - Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. Your local Somerset Memory Walk will take place on Sunday 16th September.
Lynda, who is an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador, said: 'My Mum had Alzheimer's so I know how devasting its impact can be - not only on the person who has been diagnosed but also on their family and friends. Lynda is asking families and individuals to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support local people with dementia and their carers.
The walk will start at 2pm from Brean Leisure Park on Sunday September 16th. This delightful route follows the beach to Brean Cove and over Brean Down. On return, everyone will enjoy well deserved free refreshments at the Brean Tavern. The Walk will be started by SOOTY from CITV and is open to people of all ages - sponsored dogs are especially welcome!
To register for the Memory Walk visit memorywalk.org.uk / BREAN or contact [email protected] 07936538263
