  • What is a Coordinate Plane? A plane formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line called the x- axis and a vertical number line called the y- axis.   • How to Use a Coordinate Plane A Coordinate Pair is needed! (x, y) A coordinate pair tells the exact location on the coordinate plane. The x position on the X-axis goes in the x place. The y position on the Y-axis goes in the y place. *Mathematicians plot on the x-axis first.

  • Signs of Numbers - GPS means turn Left or turn Down on the number line/axis. means turn Right or Up on the number line/axis. The signs of a number tell which way to go on the number line/axis, like a GPS gives directions!

  • Read Points (Figure out the Coordinate Pair) 1) Start at the origin. 2) Count the lines left or right toward the point. The number of lines you count goes into the x place of the coordinate pair. (x, y) becomes (2, y) 3) Now count the lines up or down toward the point. However many lines you count goes into the y place of the coordinate pair. (2, y) becomes (2, 3)

  • Find Points In which quadrant is A? is B? is C? is D? Which point is (4, -5)? 1) Start at the origin. 2) Look at the first number and count that many lines from the origin left or right. (Right if its a positive number; Left if its a negative number) 3) Look at the second number and count that many lines from where you were up or down. (Up if its a positive number; Down if its a negative number) Its Point C!

  • Plot Points Plot (-2, 3) Start at the origin. -2 is in the x place, so find -2 on the x-axis. (count the lines on the x-axis from zero) 3 is in the y place, so find 3 on the y-axis. (count the lines on the y-axis from zero)
