MEN’S DARTBALL LEAGUE

The Men’s Dartball season will kick off with the annual draft on Wednesday, September 24th at 7:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend. Practice day will be Wednesday, October 1st at 7:30 PM with the sea-son starting on Wednesday, October 8th. Anyone who hasn’t played before should contact Bill Pearson ([email protected]) so that you can be placed on a team. If you played last year and will not play this year please contact Bill so that you won’t be drafted.

LABOR DAY

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a cre-ation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American work-ers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contri-butions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Through the years the nation gave increasing em-phasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recogni-tion came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was intro-duced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Penn-sylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

The 2015 Most Valuable Student scholar-ship application will be available after September 1, 2014. The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2014 competition. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the

United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of

the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States

on the date their applications are signed; per-manent legal resident status does not qualify.

Male and female students compete separately. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leader-

ship, and financial need. All scholarships are in the form of certificates of

award conditional upon the full-time enrollment of the winner in an accredited U.S. college or university.

Applications must advance through local, district and state competitions to reach national judging. The Chicago office of the Elks National Founda-tion will notify the 500 national finalists by email in late February 2014.

Ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree, on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), in a U.S. college or university.

Applications will be available online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars, from high school counselors and from local Lodges. Applications must be submitted to the local Lodge by December 6, 2014.

Legacy Awards are $4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year for four years). The Foundation will offer a total of up to 250 awards. Any child or grandchild (or step-child, step-

grandchild, or legal ward) of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 1, 2012, is eligible to apply. The Elk must also be a paid-up member through March 31, 2015. Great-grandchildren are not eligible.

The applicant must be a high school senior. The applicant must apply online only. Applications

will be available ONLINE ONLY after September 1, 2014 http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/legacy.cfm

If the applicant's parent and grandparent are both Elk members, the applicant must apply through the parent's Elks Lodge.

Students may apply for more than one ENF schol-arship; however, they may win only one. In cases where the student qualifies for more than one, we will award the scholarship with the greater value.

Legacy Awards may only be applied to accredited US American schools, colleges or universities. (Note: Applicants from Guam, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Philippines may apply Legacy Awards toward schools, colleges or universities in their respective homes.)

Applicants must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test or the American College Test by December 31, 2014.

The student must complete and submit the ONLINE application by 12:00 p.m. (noon) Central Standard Time on the January 31, 2015, deadline. When a student registers to complete the online application, both the applicant and Lodge Secretary will be noti-fied by email.

tember 7th at noon. There is also a tailgate on Sunday, Sept 28th also at noon. As of this writing there were still a few spaces on our annual Steeler Football Club. Stop in and get your spot.

We will have a Bar Bingo on Friday, September 19th at 7:00 PM.

We now have a Wednesday dinner special to go with our dinner specials on Thursday and Saturday. All the dinner specials are listed on the calendar.

The next meeting of the Southwest District will be held on Sunday, September 21st at Monessen Lodge at 2:30 PM. The District Deputy clinic will begin at 12:30 PM.

We still have quite a few members who have not paid their dues. Dues were due on April 1, 2014 and a list of delin-quents is posted at the bar.

The Lodge will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 1st.

Thank you to the members and friends who volunteered their time during August. More volunteers are always needed for our weekly Wing Nites and our monthly Steak Frys as well as ticket sellers. We are able to keep the pric-es low by using volunteers, but more volunteers are need-ed. If interested please contact any Lodge officer or House Committee member. Or you can call the Lodge office at 724-628-4237.

Connellsville Elks Gift Certificates make excellent gifts. Request your certificates at the bar.
