The hottest day on record occurred on July 10, 1913 when the temperature in Death Valley's Furnace Creek Ranch hit 134.1-degrees.

Name a place Death Valley and it's bound to get all the attention.

A number of years back, before I started writing this blog, I stayed six weeks in the town of Elroy, Arizona.

And I'm telling you there wasn't a day under 120.

And one of those days, a day I'll never forget…

…the thermometer at the local Piggy's Pork Pie Pub hit 138-degrees.

So why isn't Elroy in the record books?

Well, it's very simple….

EMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

No one was looking.

Elroy, Arizona sits in Barajita Valley…

Today it's just a small, mostly forgotten, but tight-knit community of 312.

…about ten miles north of the Mexican border near the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

An experience I hated. Hated that I was writing about something that didn't matter to me.

...having just sold my first piece to Conde Nast Traveler magazine—

At the point I came to Elroy I hadn't yet started the Lodger Blog.

So I took my check and a small pack with my laptop, a toothbrush, and some granola bars (still my standard) and began to wander.

I felt trapped in a kind of Hell.
