LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Logan Families,
This is the last Logan Ledger newsletter I will write in 2020. What a year! As I reflect on this past year, I can’t say I am terribly sad to say goodbye to 2020. However, I am optimistic about 2021, and hopeful that things will improve.
Since this is my last newsletter for the year, I want to take this opportunity to wish the entire Logan com-munity a very happy New Year! Starting on December 19, we’ll have a two-week vacation from school. I hope you take a break from those screens and enjoy time with family. When we return, we will continue with online school. It is my sincere hope that as vaccines start to be available and cases come down (hopefully! ), We will be able to welcome your children into the building again. In the meantime, the Logan staff remains committed to making virtual learning as good as we possibly can. We are looking forward to our continued work together next year.
I hope you have a wonderful break. Don’t forget to remind your kids to read!

Meet Logan’s Music Teacher Interview By:
LORENA E. MOORE
L: What inspired you to be-come a teacher, specifically a music teacher?
J: I have always really really loved music, I have had some very im-portant people in my life who were my music teachers who always just seemed to really enjoy it and they awakened a love of music that I have that I didn’t know I had. The main reason is well, I started off in college as an oboe performance major, so I wanted to play in symphony orches-tras. But then in the middle of col-lege, I ran into some troubles, so I found the only thing I got joy from was when I was teaching oboe les-sons so on a whim I added music ed-ucation and fell in absolute love with
it. I love working with kids and ev-eryone to make music together. Mu-sic is a very communal activity and I think that’s invaluable and I want to share my love for music with ev-eryone.
L: What do you hope your stu-dents will learn from your class? I know it varies from grade.
J: I think the most important thing I would want my students to learn is how to express themselves open-ly in music, learning how to com-municate your feelings with others through music, and yeah just overall music appreciation.
L: How do you come up with
your lesson plans and find cool videos for them?
J: Lots of research! I collaborate with other teachers in the district there are some lessons I teach that I did when I was in elementary school that has stuck with me because I en-joyed them so much or thought that they were super important. I choose a lot of lesson content based on what is going on in the world and expo-sure to that. Making sure that all cultures in music are represented because there is more to music than just what is western art music. So, to simplify my answer I choose/make my lessons based on what’s happen-ing in the real world, collaborating with other teachers in the district,

like the most about teaching, I don’t like when a lesson goes wrong, and I don’t know how to fix it. I don’t like the feeling that I am letting you guys down sometimes. I guess right now I don’t like having you guys on mute and not being able to see everybody so that’s the hardest part right now in this situation.
L: Yeah, it is also probably re-ally hard when we have each other on mute because almost all of your job you use your voice.
J: Yeah, because if everyone is mut-ed you can’t hear anyone and if ev-eryone unmuted, I can’t hear you. Right, and we don’t have any instru-ments at home, so we don’t have the drums or the xylophone.
L: What music-related activi-ties do you do outside of your work?
J: I teach oboe lessons, so I have a studio of about 8 middle and high schoolers in Ann Arbor and Dexter. I’m a part of a woodwind quintet. I would love to join a community or-chestra.
L: What is a fact that most peo-ple don’t know about you?
J: I have a twin brother. He is 6’4” and I’m 5’6” so we don’t look alike.
L: Why did you choose to teach music instead of another sub-ject?
J: Music is something that is so per-sonal to us. All of us have different types of music we like to listen to. I love music. It’s something that I feel comfortable in. I love that you can learn music in so many differ-ent ways. I would choose music over anything because it’s collaborative, it’s personal, and there’s so many different ways to make music.

L: When you were younger what did you want to be when you grow up and was it differ-ent than what you do now?
J: Yes. I wanted to be a firefighter for a long time, then I wanted to be a tornado chaser because my dad and I would watch storm chasers on the weather channel for hours non-stop and I would be like “Dad it would be so cool to chase tornados” I didn’t decide to go into music until my junior year of high school so I was kind of a late bloomer when it came to figuring out what I wanted to go to college for.
L: What is one thing you like about Logan and your stu-dents?
J: I love how friendly everybody is, I love how open-minded everyone is. I love how you guys tell me when you understand or don’t understand. Or you tell me when a lesson is work-ing or isn’t working. I appreciate the feedback. Something about my teaching style, I don’t necessarily view myself as “the teacher” and you guys are “the students” I view our class as a collaboration between ev-erybody. You guys welcomed me with open arms in the middle of a pandemic and I appreciate that more than words can de-scribe.
L: What do you like most/least about being a teacher?
J: I love so many things! The thing I love getting to share something that I love so much with so many people. I love working with the kids and staff and those relationships, I love that part of it. The thing I dis-

L: Who was your favorite teacher out of all of your teach-ers? J: Oh my gosh. I have so many fa-vorites. All of my music teachers in school were important. So I went to Thurston elementary school and Yael Rothfeld was my music teach-er there. She just made music so fun. Jay Mcarthur at Clague middle school. He’s the reason I play the oboe. I used to play the clarinet. He “forced” me to switch to the oboe. So without that push in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today with an oboe performance degree. I prob-ably wouldn’t have fallen in love with music the way I did without the oboe. So I would say probably Jay Mcarthur changed my life the most when it came to that. Steve Roberts my highschool teacher at Huron high school taught me what it’s like to be so passionate about something that you love that you would do any-thing to preserve it.

Each week, students in 1st - 3rd grade attend a PLTW Technology and Engineering special for 30 minutes. We focus heavily on programming and computer science but we also love complet-ing STEAM challenges too! This week students are participating in Hour of Code activities. Most weeks, there is an independent (asynchronous) lesson for students to complete in our PLTW See-
saw course. The asynchronous lesson helps to reinforce the students’ understanding of the week’s live lesson. Students can easily access and login to Seesaw through Clever.
All students will have PLTW as part of their science curriculum this school year. Fourth graders started out the school year learning about energy and built projects to keep an egg safe in a collision. Third grade completed their PLTW science unit about forces last month. Students built Rube Goldberg machines using simple machines or compound machines to rescue a tiger. Currently 5th graders are learning about proper-ties of matter and chemical reactions. They’ll be problem solving how to make a chemical toy or something in the kitchen to show a chemical reaction for their final project.

In Library Class, students have been participating in the Great Lakes Great Books Award selection process. Each week for four weeks, all elementary AAPS students are listening to two books and then voting on their favorite. Their votes are being submitted to the Michigan Reading Association to be includ-ed in the votes from children all over the state of Michigan. Our students’ votes will help to select the book that receives this year’s award! There is a wide variety of nominees, including both fiction and information-al books. This week is Computer Science Education Week, which we celebrate each year in Library Class by partici-pating in the global Hour of Code activities. This year, the amazing PLTW teachers are engaging students in their classes with fun and enriching Hour of Code activities, and the Librarians are offering Hour of Code choice boards (below). Students are invited to enjoy these activities on their own time, and can access the choice boards on the Library Class Schoology pages.

Happy December, Logan families! In the short three weeks before Winter Break, we are planning on holding an assembly in-volving opera and storytelling. We will be learning about how singers warm up their voices before performing, and why it is important and healthy to make sure our voices are warmed up. We will be learning
some fun vocal warm-ups that professional singers use in their daily lives.
Y5s/Kindergartners have started learning how to decode rhythms in spoken poems. Soon, we will be exploring rhythm patterns using at-home musical instruments. We are continuing to explore our singing voices in music class through echo-singing, and are beginning to explore our speaking and inner voices in music class as well.
1st Graders are becoming more comfortable singing by themselves in front of their classmates and are doing an amazing job with finding the steady beat in music we are listening to in class. We are continuing to work on decoding rhythms in spoken poems and in songs. We are beginning to learn how to read the music staff, and will begin by singing two-pitch musical patterns.
Hello Logan Families!
We’ve been having a great time in art class this fall. My absolute favorite part of the day is when the kids come into art class full throttle; mic ons, cameras on, all sharing their wonderful little lives. They are such a joy to be with and I love seeing what they create. Every week in art we focus on a theme or element of art. Our upcoming themes are:
Dec 7-11: Pattern Students will use a variety of lines, colors, and geometric shapes to creatively express feelings and personal experiences. Students will create a composition using elements and principles of art to communicate ideas.
Dec 14-18: Culture and Literacy Students will illustrate a personal experience Students will demonstrate cross-curricular experiences
Jan 4-8: Form Students will explore the elements of art through playful sensory experiences
Starting next week, I’ll be sending out an email on Sunday nights detailing the art materials we’ll be using that week. If you don’t have/can’t find materials on the list, no worries. Our supplies are flexible and most often come down to something to draw with, something to draw on, and something to color with.

2nd Graders have really enjoyed being the “Secret Singer” in music class. They are becoming more confi-dent in singing tonal patterns individually, and they have become pros at their “so” and “mi” hands! We will continue to work on learning the hand signs for “la” in music class, and will eventually be able to read the music staff with three different pitches!
3rd Graders are beginning to read and identify solfege patterns on the music staff. They have mastered the identification of so, la, and mi. Soon, we will be adding some more notes as we begin to fill out our music staff. We will also be learning how to read sixteenth notes in music with some fun songs and games!
4th Graders are officially full-swing into our recorder unit, with a handful of students already having earned their White Belt! They are becoming more confident in identifying notes on the Treble Clef music staff, and we are continuing to work on reading the music staff left to right like you would a book.
5th Graders are beginning to recognize form in music. 5th graders are also practicing reading the music staff, and are becoming more comfortable with identifying note names on the music staff. They are also beginning to recognize the intervals between notes, and which notes are a step and which notes are a skip.

examining the cultures of Mexico, Spain and Argentina.
We have also learned greetings, colors, and how to in-
teract in basic phrases. Before we go on winter break,
we will continue to explore Spanish speaking countries, their foods and their traditions.

HALLOWEEN AT KRILETOWN (1ST GRADE)
Mrs. Cunningham’s class had two celebrations last week. We had a writer’s celebration where stu-dents were able to share their small moment stories with each other and family members on Zoom. Over 30 guests joined our Zoom call to hear our stories in-cluding parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and even Mr. Wright.
We also had a Fall Party. We had Mrs. Jones and three parent volunteers lead different activities in break out rooms that were so fun! We played games from PE, read a story, played pictionary and went on a scaven-ger hunt and even did an art project.
