The WHS boys’ track and fieldprogram looks to be strong this sea-son if Head Coach Ryan Coenenhas anything to say about it. And,given the passion he possesses for

every area of his life – from teach-ing and implementing math cours-es to sports – his team is in for arewarding challenge.

“My philosophy of coaching is toemphasize the importance of com-peting and taking pride in doing

the little things right,” Coenen said.“Running fast isn’t something thatjust happens for everyone. It takes afocused effort to counteract themind’s natural tendency to ease offthe gas pedal when the pressure is

on at the end of a race. You have tomotivate yourself to turn your legsover faster and to stretch yourstride and do things that aren’tcomfortable. The goal is to geteveryone running faster and push-ing what they believe their limits tobe. We are continually training theteam to get closer and closer tothose limits. To do that, you have totrain the students and their mindsto run fast. We believe running fastis an attitude and a mentality.”

With 17 runners out this year,Coenen said he also is guided bythe tradition of Coach Hummel.

“I was a freshman at Woodbinewhen Coach Hummel steppeddown from coaching,” Coenen said.“I didn’t get a chance to competeunder him but I did feel the impact

of his passion, dedication and style. It is a proud tradition to live up to.I think the boys are up to the taskand we look forward to getting outthere and competing in the Black &Gold.”

Coenen said the strengths of thesquad this year is in the long sprint-ing events where he plans to “put abig focus on the 4x400 meter relay,”which he considers critical tolonger-term success of the WHSprogram.

“Woodbine has traditionallybeen strong in the 4x400, the 4x800and the medley relays,” he said.“We are going to work hard to earnsome State berths in the relays. Butwe might be looking at betterchances in the shorter relays andhurdle events.”

Coenen believes strongly that thesecret to a successful WHS team is

learning the basics of running effi-ciently.

“It is all about pushing yourselfto the next level,” Coenen said. “Iwill stress a lot more focus than theteam is probably used to. Focus isthe key. I love track – it is what I do.This is the most important thing inthe year to me. I plan to focus onthe little things that create greatrunners.”

And, he said that philosophy isshowing some early gains for theteam.

“We are making major leaps inpractice in both running perform-ance and distance,” he said. “Forexample, Kyle Kuhlman was a100/200m runner before and he isnow working up to 400-meterevents. For his size, this shows asolid commitment to form and per-formance. The boys have done an

excellent job of embracing the quar-ter-mile this year as ‘our’ event andit is going to pay off come May.”

He said it is the one race that isused the most in track competitionswith nine slots at that distance. The200-meter is the next most popularwith eight slots at that distance. Thenext critical category is the 800-meter with seven slots to fill.

“For the 400, the movement mustbe clean and efficient,” Coenensaid. “The runners are starting tounderstand what it takes to holdyourself to higher expectations andare seeing more potential in them-selves. This is one of the areaswhere we will really excel. But, youhave to be able to run in all threedistance areas to be a winningteam.”

He added that Woodbine hasContinued on Page 5

WHS’s head girls’ track coachRod Smith said the team’s greateststrength going into the spring sea-son is “a well-balanced team.”

“We have real decent competi-tors for throwers, high jumpers,

long jumpers, in our distance run-ners (1,500 and 3,000 meters), andin the middle range (400 and 800meters),” he said.

Smith said the team is now“working on conditioning and basework.”

“I need to get them back in the

running mood,” he said. “We havea solid nucleus to build around. Wehave all of our girls back includingfrom our state-winning distancemedley relay team.”

Smith said seniors Shelby Hall,Justina Royer and Melissa Smithanchor this year’s squad. Otherseniors out this year that were notcompeting last year are Shelby Dickand Shelby Vandemark.

On the season, Smith saidIKM/Manning will be the toughestteam to beat in the conference.

“IKM/Manning has a lot of theirdepth back and they have moregirls out on the team – that willmake them a tough competitor,” hesaid. “Griswold and Treynor bothalso have some very good runners. Those teams are almost always

strong. Tri-Center also has a verygood cross-country team which is agood base for track.”

Smith said he and the team areboth looking forward to settingsome school records this year.

“Hall was fourth at state last yearin the 800-meter,” Smith said. “Shereally wants to beat the schoolrecord in that event. She is two sec-onds away from that record, whichwas set in 1975.”

He also noted that the winningmedley team of Hall, Royer, KaitlynPulscher and Shelby Behrendt areall back and he is looking for somestrong performances out of thegroup.

With 21 girls out for the team,Smith said this is the largest group

always been pretty strong in each ofthose main areas with CoachHummel leaving a proud traditionin the 4x400 events.

For spectators, Coenen said themost exciting and fun heats towatch are the 4x100 events.

“It is just exciting to watch,” hesaid. “It is fast and everyone isalways close and a lot of thingshappen in a short amount of timethat can drastically affect the out-come of the meet.”

For individual performances,Kyle Kuhlman returns as a StateQualifier and looks to be strong inthe open 100/200.

“Kyle needs to expand his reper-toire to be in the 400-meter, too,”Coenen said. “He is one of ourstrongest runners and we will relyheavily on him as a team.”

Matt Monahan has improved a

great deal so far this season,Coenen said, especially in the sprintrelay events. Mason Mentink is theteam’s 400-meter hurdling ace,Coenen said, noting that this is avery tough event that requires com-petitors to be in excellent physicalshape to be successful. JoshMatusik will be a major factor inany of our loaded relays with hisefficiently graceful stride.

Also on Coenen’s radar is TristanHatterman in the middle distancecategory. He also is working tomentor freshmen J.C. Probasco andTalon Delaney in the sprints andhurdles.

“Our main goal is to winHighway 30,” Coenen said. “I don’tlike getting beat by people whowhere purple. Logan and BoyerValley are consistently strong pro-grams that are moving in the rightdirection. We’re going to have

some work to makeup coming outof the field events and we hope wecan make up the lost ground on thetrack.”

He said Woodbine will host theannual Hummel Relays April 23that will bring six teams to theschool. With Woodbine’s 46-year-old dated track, the number ofteams willing to compete here arelimited.

“It would be nice someday to runon an all-weather track here athome,” Coenen said. “Several otherprograms around us have eight-lane all-weather tracks which is theminimum for hosting conferenceevents. We have six lanes. We wantto create an experience for teamscoming to Woodbine; to make it thelevel of experience it used to be forteams to compete here back whenour crushed brick oval was state ofthe art.”

Coenen said one of the best partsof coaching in Woodbine is the sup-port of the community.

“It is kind of neat how active andsupportive the community is for theschool and its programs,” he said.“It’s nice to see those names fromthe past coming back to competeand the number of people cheeringon the kids. It is especially nice forme – like coming full circle (frommy student days here).

Coenen’s assistant coach is JasonStrong. Together, Coenen said helooks for great team performancesfrom this year’s boys’ track andfield team. We’ve got a lot of youngboys this season and we hope theyeach can develop roles that help ourteam see more success. Hopefullywe can stay healthy and stay com-mitted to the process. If we do,good things are going to happen forus come May.

Good luck this Spring,Lo-Ma Panthers!

The team has already participat-ed in some early meets and Smithsaid he is pleased with his team’sperformances in those events.

The first was an Iowa StateUniversity hosted indoor event thatwas open to every school district inthe state and allowed the Woodbineteam to compete against teams andindividual athletes from across thestate.

“More than 400 schools partici-pated in that event with literallyhundreds of competitors – it allowsour girls to experience the fullrange of talent in the state and howthey compare,” Smith said.

The next meet was the March 17Conference Indoor meet at BuenaVista University, Storm Lake, inwhich the team also performedabove par, Smith said.

The first outdoor meet wasscheduled after press time for thesports tab on March 29 in Audubon.

Smith said the girls’ team willcompete in 13 meets this season,

not counting the state meet.“That is about the same number

of meets as in the past,” he said.State competition is a very likely

prediction for this year’s team,”Smith said.

“We will probably qualify asevents, not as a team,” Smith said.“We qualified for six events lastyear, which is quite a few for us. Ithink there is a very strong likeli-hood that we’ll qualify for evenmore events this year.”

The WHS girls track programcomes from a proud and long histo-ry of success and commitment tothe sport.

“Our girls’ track tradition andhistory is very rich,” Smith said.“We won state three years in a rowin the 1970s and Debbie Esser wenton to become a World Class interna-tional runner. In the 1990s, ourteams also dominated the statemeets. Woodbine is pretty wellknown for its track program andsuccesses. That all goes back to leg-endary Coach Hummel.”

Smith said he got his is start incoaching from Hummel.

“In 1989, I became his assistantcoach,” Smith said. “I worked andlearned from him until 1997 when Ibecame the head coach. He wasvery passionate about this programand I have the responsibility ofkeeping that spirit alive in the pro-gram.”

Team managers for the girls’track team are Cassi Barry, AnnieKlein and Bailee Meyer. The assis-tant coach is Teresa Smith, Rod’swife, which kinds of make theprogram a bit of a family affair forhim.

“My family has been highlyinvolved in girls’ track with mesince 1998,” he said. “My wife is myassistant coach because she wantsto help me out and she and I justknow how to work together to getthe most out of the girls – we knowhow each of us wants things to bedone. And, with Hall being myniece, it rounds out the familyaspect nicely.”

WHS golf teams look to manage course, overall gameBy Kevin BrownTwiner General Manager

WHS second year golf coach TimMarshall said he is excited by thedepth and breadth of the boys teamcoming back this year and looking

forward to the challenge of mold-ing a new crop of girls’ players intowinners.

“I’m very excited by the playersthat we have coming back,”Marshall said. “Our goal is to take

both our boys’ and girls’ squads toconference and state competition.”

On the girls’ team, five girls areout. That team is lead by returningletter winners Jessica Allen (junior)

Continued on Page 8

Page 8: Logan Herald-Observer/Woodbine Twiner Spring Sports Preview

and Courtney Schlinz (sophomore). The rest of the team are two fresh-men girls and a junior – WhitneyRonk, Karlie Heefernan, andMegan Pauley

“Those girls have never evenplayed golf before but they areeager to learn and master the skillsof the game,” Marshall said. “Theplayers enable us to field a compet-itive team – something the programhas not always been able to do.”

Marshall said he doesn’t activelyrecruit students to the team in def-erence to WHS’s proud tradition intrack and field for both boys’ andgirls’ programs.

“The girls talk to each other andwe do look for girls not alreadyinvolved in other activities thathave an interest in golf and workthem into the program,” he said.

On the boys’ side, there are fivereturning letter winners – DavisHackman (senior), Joe Brown (sen-ior), Jay Radloff (Senior), ChrisJohnson, (Sophomore) and PatrickGlackin (Junior).

“Hackman was a state partici-pant last year and I am looking for-ward to the experience and maturi-ty he brings to both the game andthe team,” he said. “Brown andHackman went to the conferencetournament last year and placedthird and fourth, respectively. Weare excited to see where they placethis year.”

To get to the south section of theconference, Marshall said individ-ual team members need to be ratedin the top 20 players of all theteams. For the entire team to com-pete, they need to be rated in thetop three.

“That is very possible for us – wehave the talent and the ability tomanage the course to make thishappen,” he said.

Marshall said Hackman andBrown are the best on the team atmanaging their overall game.

“Those two know how to workthe ball around the course reallywell,” he said. “They will teach theothers guys how to do that.”

For the girls’ team, Marshall saidJessica Allen has the potential to bevery competitive, individually.

“Allen is a very solid player andI know what I will get from herevery time out on the course,”Marshall said. “For Schlinz, the skyis the limit for her. She hasimproved a great deal from lastyear.”

Marshall said the top four scoresare used to determine team winnersand that this year’s teams should behighly competitive on the links.

One of the biggest strengths theWHS golf teams have, Marshallsaid, is the maturity to keep thescorecard numbers low.

“We don’t want big numbers onthe score card,” he said. “These kidsall know how to recover from apoor shot. They have learned howto manage that and move on to thenext shot.”

For example, he said Hackman“was able to see what it takes” to be

a champion golfer by participatingin last year’s state competition.

“Hackman learned and experi-enced what it takes to manage thecourse last year,” Marshall said.“He has taken that experienceand built a solid core gamearound it. He is in mid-seasonform right now.”

And, Marshall said he wishes allof his players had the mind controlover the game that Brown does.

“I wish all my golfers had Joe’smentality,” he said. “He has nonegativity at all about his game. He’s always ready to get on to thenext shot. It is his mind set thatmakes him such a tough competi-tor.”

For the season, Marshall saidboys’ teams from West Monona andIKM will be tough but thatWoodbine has a good chance ofmatching their skills.

“West Monona has everyoneback from last year which willmake them hard to beat,” Marshallsaid. “

On the girls’ side, Marshall saidit is the new players who will helpkeep the team competitive.

“We have a lot of new faces andthey have a great attitude to learnthe game,” he said. “Nothing getsthem down – they are very solid as

a team. Our goal this year is not tofinish last every week. Last year, welost every contest. This year we arepositioned better competitively.Last year was our school’s first timein years to even field a girls’ teamand that was an important mile-stone. And, I am good with begin-ners – they don’t have any badhabits we have to break first.”

A practicing strength for the

team, he said, is the integrity andspirit the players bring.

“At practices, they do a good jobof taking care of themselves,” hesaid. “They actually know the dif-ferent parts of their games theyneed to work on and they take theresponsibility to work on thoseareas. It’s easy for players at thisage to just focus on how far theycan hit the ball. Our kids know theyhave to work on their touch, chips

and putting and find the time towork on all aspects of their games.”

Most of the students out for golf,he said, are because they love thegame and want to master its intrica-cies.

“Most of my players come fromfamilies who enjoy golf as a leisureor business activity,” Marshall said.“Golf is fast becoming a major partof business; their years on thecourse will serve them well as they

build their careers.”High School tournaments are

nine hole with a solid score on theboys side of high 30s to low 40s asbeing top finishes and for the girls’players, a score in the mid-50s willget players into top spots.

“Our goals are to work well as ateam, focus on our individualgames, and practice to win,”Marshall said. “I’m looking for-ward to a solid season.”

Boyer Valley Boys’ Golf team in rebuilding yearThe Boyer Valley boy’s golf team

comes into the season on a rebuild-ing year. The Bulldogs will be look-ing to replace three of the top fourgolfers from last season’s squad, but fourth year coach Gary Neilsenhas faith in his squad they can com-pete.

“We did lose quite a bit of experi-ence from last year’s squad,” saidNeilsen. “But we have some youngguys that show some promise. With the leadership of our top guys,we can make something happen asa team.”

Neilsen will be looking for somebig things from senior Luke Elder, who will be coming back as thenumber 1 and his fourth year on

varsity. Another big returner willbe junior Michael Christensen. Hewill also be looking for some quali-ty play from junior Tyler Hoffmann. He came up for districts last seasonand will be looking to continue offof that success.

He feels that having quite a fewpeople out, it will help his team tostay competitive and work towardsearning their spots, but also hurtthe team with no experience and nocertainty as to who will fill eachspot each week.

Neilsen thinks the WesternValley Conference will be toughthis year, but that his team can getup and compete with the top 3 ofthe south division. He also feels

that IKM-Manning and WestMonona will be at the top of theirgame this year.

“I feel that there are some goodquality teams in the conference andour division this year,” saidNeilsen. “I won’t let them acceptsecond place and want them towork towards the best.Realistically, we will be shooting tofinish top 3 in our division andreach our conference championshipmeet.”

The big thing that Neilsenwants to accomplish this year isto develop some consistency as asquad and something to build onfor next year.

Boyer Valley Girls’s Golf team has experience The Boyer Valley girl’s golf team

comes into the season looking tomake a splash in the conference. The Bulldogs will be looking toreplace three golfers lost from lastseason’s squad, but fourth yearcoach Gary Neilsen feels they fill aquality squad this year.

“We do have experience with ourreturners this year, including ourtop returner Codi Block,” saidNeilsen. “But we will be lookingfor some younger girls to step upthis year. We will need some lead-ership from Block and the other tworeturners.”

Neilsen will be looking for somebig things from senior Codi Block,

who will coming back as the num-ber 1 in her fourth year on varsityand after qualifying second forregionals last year. Two other jun-iors, Megan Behrendt and WhitneyKlein, will also be key componentsto Boyer Valley’s success this year. Both are returning with significantexperience on varsity last season.

Having Codi coming back off astrong year will be a big lift for histeam. “Having someone with thatexperience and success can onlyrub off onto the other girls,” saidNeilsen. He knows that will helpovercome the youth and inexperi-ence his team has.

He feels that the Western Valley

Conference isn’t very deep thisyear, but the top teams will be com-petitive with each other. He alsofeels that the conference champi-onship is wide open and having afull squad will help his team com-pete for that.

“It’s tough to say what will hap-pen with the conference this year,”said Neilsen. “I feel we can competeand make something happen. Notevery team will have a full squad, which gives us an advantage.”

The big thing that Neilsen wantsto happen this year is to have theteam develop something they canbuild on as the year goes along aswell as for the future.

BV Boys’ Track team shows great depth earlyThe Boyer Valley boy’s track

team returns quite a bit of depththis season and is looking to have avery successful season. JayPetersen comes into his 10th seasonand likes what his team has to offer.

“We have good experience andtalent throughout the team, espe-cially in the lower grade levels,”said Petersen. “That will provideplenty of competition in practice forthe guys. That competition will

help in everyone performing attheir top level at each and everymeet.”

Petersen will be looking for somebig things from senior distant run-

He likes the leadershipthese guys bring to the table andknow they will show that leader-ship in how they perform in theirrespective competitions.

He likes having quite a few peo-

ple out and how it will help histeam to stay competitive and worktowards earning their spots. Also, having the experience of 16 letterwinners coming back will also addan advantage for his team.

Neilsen thinks the WesternValley Conference will be toughthis year, but he knows his team cancompete and have a successful year.

He also feels that IKM-Manningand West Harrison will be compet-ing for the top spot with his team aswell.

“I feel that this team can be com-petitive and be at the top in mostevents and win every meet,” saidPetersen. “I won’t let them acceptsecond place and want them towork towards the best. Our experi-

ence will give us an advantage, especially early in the season. Thiswill help us start to build to havinga successful season.”

The big thing that Neilsen wantsto accomplish this year is to keepthe competition high and makesure they are competing at a highlevel in each event and scoring a lotof points.

“We have good experience andtalent coming back which will pro-vide for a fun and productive year,”said Pippitt. “We have quite a fewgirls coming back, many that quali-

She likes having depth and expe-rience on her squad which will helpprovide for some quality results.

She also feels that the team canbreak some school records this sea-son.

“With the numbers that I have, they will all see varsity minutes,”Dulberg said. “The varsity starters

will have to earn their position. Wewill be rotating, but want to be ingood condition to be able to play alot.”

Dulberg expects his team to carry apositive attitude and put forth a greatdeal of effort. “The ladies are so excit-ed and ready to go and we are hopingto come in with a bang, ” addedDulberg.

Dulberg plans on playing a high-pressured defense and relying ontheir conditioning. Some weaknessesDulberg foresees are direct and cornerkicks and set pieces.

The Lady Reds will be competingin the Western Iowa Conferenceagainst Riverside, A-H-S-T, Tri-Centerand Underwood. Dulberg expects allthe conference games to be tough. Healso sees other area teams includingGlenwood, St. Albert, ThomasJefferson, Denison-Schleswig andHarlan to be tough.

“Our team is planning to win thisyear,” Dulberg said. “We will work to

be good and will get better in playingthe better teams. Hopefully, we willkeep improving and keep pushing tobe the best we can be.”

The Lady Reds travel to CrestonApril 2nd for their first contest.

Contrarez will have 15 boys com-peting for playing time on his rosterincluding senior defenders DevonJensen and Ryan Carlson and mid-fielder Logan Reinig.

Juniors on the team will be mid-fielders Caleb Wilson, Jacob Pagel,Nathan Phillips and Zach Boggs, goalies Scott Voss, Lucas Goff andZach Chapin, and striker LoganOliphant.

Sophomores include defenderJustin Chapin and mid-fielder CyanSeamann.

Contrarez plans to rely on Wilson’sabilities to help lead the team. “Calebreally stands out, works hard, isexplosive and is a good athlete,”Contrarez said.

Discipline and a hard work ethic

are two characteristics that Contrarezfeels his team will use to its advan-tage. “I don’t know what we have forskill level yet, and I know it will be achallenge, but these kids are coach-able and work very hard.”

Contrarez sites a lack of exposureto the high school level competiton asa weakness for his squad and also itsteam chemistry.

“We will be defensive-minded,”Contrarez said. “It’s easier to over-come better skilled opponents by lim-iting their scoring opportunities.”

The Big Reds hope to be competi-tive in its first year, but are also work-ing on building a program for thefuture. Contrarez thinks Underwoodwill have one of the better teams inthe Western Iowa Conference, butfeels all the teams will be tough tocontend with.

“We want to to win at least one-halfof our games,” Contrarez added. “Iwant the kids to have fun, but also tolearn and be competitive.”
