    By Cathy Hansen

This years conference was the 30thAGM held by this association. We were for-

tunate to have theFather of this LogBuilding Association,Allan Mackie, in atten-dance. Personally, for meit was an honour to haveAllan acknowledge ourwork and share his

delight in the work thestaff and members are

doing to bring this association to where itis today. It was great to see so many famil-iar and new faces at this event. Newcomersto our annual event shared their delight atthe networking and the sharing which tran-spired throughout this gathering.

All events were well received and wehad many positive comments, along withsome constructive ideas for future confer-ences.Thanks to all of you who took the

time to provide feedback at the confer-ence. Our email and phone line are alwaysopen for future comments as well togeth-er we will grow wisely!

There were two pre-conference coursesprior to our main event. The Log GradingCourse was well attended and enjoyed, with Ed Burke as the instructor. They had alot of fun, despite the freezing tempera-tures. Once again, Frederic Brillant tookstudents to new levels in his French Scribe

Course, and with volunteer Willi Miksensuring they had heat and coffee, the stu-dents survived winter in Quebec.

The Log Builders Competition onThursday afternoon saw an enthusiasticgroup compete for the top prize. This yearSimon Auger of Qubec, stole the title.Auger also walked away with a new chain-

Tim Bullock requested that the annual

financial statements be created and sent tothe membership earlier. DG suggested that

the information will be sent out with the

conference packets next year. JP made him-self available to go over any and all of thefinancial statement.

DG acknowledged Jerry Wait for his work

    as the past president.

DG acknowledged the board for their

efforts and pointed out their diversity. The

board has been taking a far greater role forthe association.

Jerry Wait asked about the future location

of the Rendez-vous.RS mentioned that there

have been no fixed demands for new loca-tions.The Cherryville site is still available for

the next gathering. It takes a local hero(s) to

carry the load for setting up a Rendez-vous.

We would like suggestions for future sites.

Next year the conference will be in the

Okanagan area of B.C. and we need your

suggestions. Jean Steinbrecher noted that we need to

notify the B.C. Societies Commission in

Victoria retroactively when we hold our con-

ference outside of B.C. or we may lose ourstatus.

DG thanked Pierre Cousineau for his

support in assisting with the pre-conferenceand conference courses.

    staff.

resentative of the LBIBC. This organization

    Electrical Plug MortiseProduction Jig

As demonstrated at Jig Talk atthe Aylmer Conference, a small

box of 2x6sand 2" plywoodscraps and a padded Mini Pro Bar onyour power saw make quick work ofplug mortises. I added a bubble level tothe topside and use a cordless drill driv-er to screw the box to the log wall.Often I use a horizontal centre line onthe log to move the box left or right tocut a two or three gangable switch. A

corresponding centre line is drawn on the box. Someday Iwill make a box to cut multiple switches but, until then, thissystem works well. Use a switch box as a gauge to mark

the offset required. Have yourlicensed electrician install boxesthat have the wire knockoutsexit the rear instead of the

    sides and little

    chisel workshould berequired.

I also usean ovalshaped alu-minum flatstock tem-plate to markthe log for asmall plumbscarf prior tousing the jig.

These are cut with a radius sole planer and touched upwith a disc grinder and the flat produced should exceed theheight and width of the cover plate to be used.

Further to John Boys Nail-on Level Adapter: if you areworking alone and require levelling of a log with centre

On the Web, the traditional mar-keting credo of Build it, and they will

    come has beenreplaced by

    Promote it,and they will

    come. It does-

nt matter hownice your sitelooks,or how easyit is to navigate, or

how informativethe content is, if no one can actuallyfind your Web site. The good news isthat if you have a small business Web

site or even a personal Web site, youcan still compete by using the samesearch engine positioning strate-

gies utilized by major online market-ing campaigns.

    Search engine positioning

consists of four stages: 1. Page

preparation,2.Link building,3. Searchengine submission, and 4. Monitoringand analysis.

Before we go any further, lets get

a couple of things straight: Searchengines are only one piece of

the puzzle. A complete Web site

marketing strategy must take intoaccount how users typically accessyour Web site: The majority alreadyknow your Web site address and

they may type it in or link to it fromyour e-mail signature, the secondgroup follows links from other sitesto yours, and the third group uses a

search engine to find your site.Lets also mention the importantrole your Web site statistics will

play in this game. Talk to yourInternet Service Provider or Webhosting service and make sure youhave access to regularly updated

Web stats. Now you can find outexactly how many people have visit-ed your Web site, what pages theyare viewing, which search engines

and keywords were used to findyour site, how long visitors are stay-ing at your site, and even where they

are from.Use your stats to gauge theeffectiveness of your marketingstrategies, and fine-tune both yourmarketing campaign and the

performance of your Web site. Now lets get started! The first

and most critical step in online

    marketing is building the best

Web site you can afford tobuild. After all, this Web site is yourface to the world.Once your site has

been built, you must prepare it forsearch engines. Every page of yourWeb site should have an informativepage title, a list of keywords and a

description, as well as indexable textcontaining your most important key-words. The keywords and descrip-

tion reside in the META tags of yourdocument and are not displayedon the Web site itself.

    An increasingly important compo-

nent of search engine positioning isincreasing the relevance of your

site by building links to it from othersites. This process is referred to as

link building. There are two mainreasons for focusing on link building:

The number of sites linking to

your Web site is a major factor indetermining how your site ranks onmost major search engines, and

    Following links from other sites

is the number two way people visitWeb sites.

So how can you build links?

By searching out industry andregional directories where you could

have your site included, for example, the ILBA Web site found atwww.logassociation.org.

By exchanging links betweenother clients to build an extensivenetwork of links to benefit everyone.

By purchasing ads with links on

other Web sites. You can constantly monitor to see

who is linking to your site, and just asimportantly, you can measure exact-

ly how many visitors are following aparticular link to your site. Afterreviewing this data you will have the

information you need to make thoseimportant marketing decisions.

After you have optimized yourWeb site and built those all-impor-

tant links to your site, youre readyto submit your Web site to searchengines. Choose the searchengines your target audience is

most likely to use. In NorthAmerica, the top search enginesinclude Google, Yahoo, AllTheWeb

    Tracking The Success of

    Your Advertising:

Additional domain namesor Web site addresses can be

used to track the efficiency ofmore traditional marketingcampaigns. For example, youcan place an ad in a magazinereferencing a specific domainname not normally used by

visitors to your site.Your Website statistics can then be usedto determine how many visi-tors were convinced enough

by your ad to visit your Website.

    Publications Committee Report

Some exciting events took place atthe Conference in Aylmer. The

PublicationsCommittee hadthe chance tomeet face to facewith John Boys anddiscuss the publica-tion and printing oftheJig Book. As aresult of that

meeting, two pro-posals for the printing of theJig Bookwill be presented to the Board ofDirectors. Each proposal reflects thecosts for printing and what thebreak-even point is for each of theproposals.

    John committed the time neces-

sary to finish the last few pages of theJig Book so we can have it printed andready for sale this year. Thanks, John, for your dedication to this project.

Sign-up sheets were circulated atthe Conference asking who is inter-ested in purchasing theJig Book. Alltold, 37 people signed up to purchasetheJig Book. All of you who want toget your names on the list for thefirst printing of theJig Book, please letthe ILBA office staff know and your

names will be added to the list. While at the Conference, John

Boys presented an idea for his nextproject. It is for a Log Home FinishingBook. This project may be also pre-sented in the form of a CD.Wouldntit be great to supply your clients or

contractors with a tool that shows

eight different ways to install win-dows?

This CD would be a compilationof finish and construction details fromthe members of the ILBA. Go John! You certainly have the PublicationsCommittees support as well as manyof the members that were at Aylmer.
