Production logging analysis

Production logging and its interpretation has changed

dramatically over the past 20 years due to the advances

in electronics, sensors, and computer technology.

Production logging is now seen as a powerful quantitative

method of obtaining acquisition data alongside pressure

transient and production decline analysis.

In near vertical and homogeneous flow regimes we

deploy our standard PL toolstrings; usually incorporating

both full-bore and inline spinners, pressure, temperature,

capacitance and density tools (in addition to the gamma-

ray and CCL used for depth correlation). In situations

where stratified flow is expected (particularly highly

deviated wells), we supplement these options with our

array tools; collectively called the “MAPS” system.

ALTUS Intervention uses Kappa’s Emeraude for the

analysis/interpretation of all of our PL data. The customer

will benefit from both the very best in computer models

and the most intuitive display/interrogation of the results.

Rate calculation is treated as a minimization task and

solved using nonlinear regression, offering full flexibility

in the type and number of input measurements. Emeraude

includes specific treatment for the “MAPS” tools: the

Capacitance Array Tool (CAT), Spinner Array Tool (SAT)

and the Resistance Array Tool (RAT); image tracks can be

created, and cross sections displayed at any depth.

Emeraude provides an extremely flexible and intuitive means for comparing and contrasting all of the data acquired in a PLT. Screen configurations (optimised to show important features in the data) can be archived by the analyst for recall by the customer using the Emeraude Viewer.

Page 15: Logging services product catalogue

15

In addition to the printed report we also try to encourage

our clients to take a copy of the integrated dataset; this

allows them to view the details of the data with their

own version of Emeraude, or with a free copy of the

Emeraude Viewer.

Production logging is no longer just the tool of last resort;

PL is now used as a calibration point for the reservoir

model and as an important tool in the development

of the producing intervals in the wellbore. This means

that the reservoir engineer now has a powerful tool

in the drive for more accurate and refined reservoir

characterization.

Understanding the implications of differing phase velocities

is an important part of establishing an accurate picture of

the flowing environment in a highly deviated well.

Results from the non-linear regression used to calculate

the rates are incorporated in the displays for comparison

to the input data. In this way it is possible to assess how

accurately individual sensors reacted to the flow regime,

providing a “reality check” on the strength of the model.

tool as well as start and stop times. Downhole, the UMT

controls the sensors and stores logged data against time

in a flash memory. After logging, the data is down-

loaded to the laptop and then merged with depth-time

data from the Depth-Time Recorder (DTR). The UMT is

powered by a separate, high capacity Lithium battery

pack in a battery holder (MBH).

and indicate perforations or damage. The pressure

sensor consists of a quartz crystal and is used for

downhole flowing and shut-in pressure measurements.

The QPS is also a quartz sensor measuring the wellbore

pressure. The tool is used as a second pressure sensor

in the toolstring and has the same specifications as the

pressure sensor in the QPC-tool.

Spinner Array Tool, SATFluid velocity and direction

The Spinner Array Tool (SAT) features six miniature

turbines deployed on bowspring arms, enabling discrete

local fluid velocities to be measured at 60 degree

intervals around the wellbore.

Phase segregation occurs in many wells, even those with

little deviation from vertical. Lighter phases migrate to the

high side of the well, heavier phases to the low side. The

individual phases flow at different velocities and possibly

in different directions.

The Spinner Array Tool (SAT) provides direct measurement

of individual phase velocities. Combined with holdup data

from the Resistance Array Tool (RAT) and Capacitance

Array Tool (CAT), this forms the Multiple Array Production

Suite (MAPS), which makes it possible to provide quanti-

tative estimates of the volumetric flow rate of each phase

with a much higher degree of certainty and thus provide

vital information for reservoir management.

KEY FEATURES:

· Greater tolerance to well debris

· Reduced tool diameter

· Easier to service and maintain

· Cross-sectional velocity profiling

· 3D imaging of velocity profile with MAPview software

· Phase velocities in segregated fluid streams in deviated

and horizontal wells

22

Capacitance Array Tool, CATProduction logging in horizontal wells

Data interpretation in horizontal and highly deviated

wells is difficult because fluid phases segregate, slug

or re-circulate along the high angle section, often

causing stratified flow. Conventional tools with sensors

centralized in the wellbore only gauge flow properties

in the middle of the wellbore and miss out what is

happening in the circumference of the wellbore.

The RAT and the CAT are tools with 12 miniature

sensors mounted on collapsible bow springs. This design

enables the sensors to intercept the fluid flowing along

the circumference of the well bore, providing a more

detailed picture of the flow regime and a more accurate

PL interpretation. The software also generates the

average hold-up for each phase.

The Capacitance Array Tool (CAT) is a 12-sensor fluid

identification tool. Each sensor measures localised

fluid capacitance and individual phase hold-up close

to the wellbore. Different dielectric constants enable

identification of oil, gas and water.

KEY FEATURES:

· Phase identification independent of well deviation

· Cross- sectional water hold-up profile

· Calculation of percentage of each phase present

· Identification of water entry points

· Internal orientation sensor

· Combinable with other GE Ultrawire™ tools

· Memory or surface read-out operation

Fullbore spinnersCFS and CFB

The flowmeter measures the velocity of well fluids using

a turbine (spinner) impeller. The higher the fluid velocity,

the faster the spinner rotates. Knowing fluid velocity and

tubing size, volumetric flow rate can be calculated. There is

a wide range of flowmeters available, selection depending

on several parameters including completion size, expected

phases, flow rate and the potential for debris.

FULLBORE SPINNERS

The main spinner is placed at the bottom of the toolstring.

The fullbore spinner comes in two different designs:

· Caged fullbore flowmeter, CFB. The spinner blades

and cage assembly are closed in tubing enabling it

to pass through tubing restrictions without damage,

and then open up to present a large, more sensitive

impeller in casing

· Continuous flowmeter spinner, CFS. The spinner is

continuously rotating and is used in both tubing and

casing. It is more robust and can be used in wells

where debris such as sand may impede the impeller

blades. The threshold is lower than the caged spinner,

and is therefore suitable for logging in lower fluid

velocity wells.

KEY FEATURES:

· Injection and production flow profiling

· Leak and cross-flow detection

· Interchangeable mechanical sections

· Solid impeller shafts for high rate injection wells

· Combinable with other GE Ultrawire™ tools

· Memory or surface read-out operation

Multifinger Caliper and MTT Analysis

In the increasingly harsh environments and extended

well life that we often encounter in the industry the issue

of well integrity is becoming more and more important.

Many operators find it crucially important to try to

understand the levels of corrosive damage and/or

physical deformations that are present in their wells.

In addition many operators have to deal with scale

deposits that have serious impact on the flow. We use

the MIPS caliper analysis software for the analysis.

MIPS enable extremely accurate processing and fine

calibration of the data whilst providing 3D, cross-

sectional tools for interpreting the results.

ON-CALL INTERPRETATION SERVICE

ALTUS Intervention offers a 24-hour interpretation

service. One of our interpreters are always on duty

for quick interpretation of MIT data.

This service is typically used for identifying suitable

areas for plug setting, intervals with scale, finding

minimum inner diameter and amount of corrosion

in the tubing.

A remarkable feature of the MIPS 3D visualisation

capabilities is that the same tools are available within

the “Client Viewer” that accompanies each report. This

means that the customer can load the relevant dataset

and have the same opportunities to engage with (and

understand) the data as the ALTUS Intervention analyst

who created the report. In order to fully understand and

evaluate the survey MIPS incorporates several highly

intuitive tools (such as the 3D view shown here) for

interacting with the data. The 3D module allows the

creation of “static” views (such as this one) which can be

incorporated in the report; it also enables .avi “movies”

to be generated showing particularly critical areas

within the wellbore.

Firing system

ALTUS Intervention is dedicated to deliver the safest

firing systems available. The SIS-S system delivered

by DYNA-energetics is RF-safe and safe against static

electricity and high frequencies. Firing of the detonators

and igniters is only possible with the suitable DYNAWELL

digital firing panel.

The DYNAWELL Multitronic Firing Panel II is designed for

perforating when used together with DYNAWELL RF-safe

electronic initiators and selective selectronic switches.

The igniter is temperature resistant, and is used to initiate

power charges in applications such as plug setting.

The detonator is temperature resistant and fluid disabled,

and is used to detonate charges in tubing punchers and

perforation guns.

SEQUENTIAL PERFORATING

In order to streamline the jobs where it is desirable

to perforate various in one run, sequential perforation

is made possible utilizing a small electronic device

which takes advantage of the safety features of the

DYNAWELL RF-safe electronic detonator. This additional

piece of electronics consists of the small addressable

Selectronic Switch which is mounted inside each gun/

perforating interval body together with the Dynawell

RF-safe electronic detonator. Each detonator – switch

combination can be individually addressed using the

Selectronic software on a standard PC in conjunction

with the DYNAWELL Selective Firing Panel.

KEY FEATURES:

· Operates on mono-conductor cable

· Perforate up to 12 zones in one run

· Work with an RF-safe detonator

· Easy to use, only one type of switch

Radial Cutting Torch™, RCT, provides the industry with

the safest and most efficient pipe cutting alternative to

explosives or hazardous chemicals.

Mcr’s Radial Cutting Torch tool is a patented cutting

device used to sever tubing, casing, drill pipe, and

coiled tubing without the use of explosives or hazardous

materials, making it one of the safest pipe cutting tools

on the market. Using advanced technology, the patented

nozzle and proprietary mixture of various powdered

metals produces jets of highly energized plasma to cut

virtually any type of pipe in any well condition. Because

the RCT does not use explosives or hazardous chemicals,

the tool can be shipped almost anywhere in the world

within 24 hours, saving significant time and associated

costs, while remaining compliant with safety regulations.

OPERATION

Radial Cutting Torch assembly is lowered into the well

and correlated with the use of a CCL until desired depth

is obtained. The thermal generator ignites and activates

the primary fuel load; highly energized plasma is

produced causing an increase in internal pressure.

Radial Cutting Torch, RCT

Once the pressure produced inside the torch exceeds

that of the well bore, the protective sleeve is displaced

exposing the nozzle to the well bore.

Plasma exits thru the nozzle to sever the target in drilling,

completion or production scenarios, within well bore

temperatures up to 500° (260°C) and pressures to

20,000 psi (137.9 MPa).

Perforating Torch Cutter™ provides the industry with

a safe, efficient and reliable pipe punching alternative

to explosives.

Perforating Torch Cutter tool effectively perforate coil

tubing, tubing, casing and drill pipe without the use

of explosives or hazardous chemicals. When running

a Radial Cutting Torch job that requires adequate flow

into the annulus, explosive perforators and punchers are

unreliable at producing a consistent and sufficient hole in

pipe. The short comings of explosive punchers can have

a dramatic effect on the success or failure of an RCT cut.

MCR’s line of punchers allow operators to perforate with

confidence while relying on the field proven technology

that the RCT delivers.

OPERATION

Perforating Torch Cutter assembly is lowered into the

well to the desired depth. Thermal Generator ignites

and activates the primary fuel load causing an increase

in internal pressure. Following internal pressure rise,

plasma exits the torch which perforates the target pipe.

Per forating Torch Cutter, PTC

By design, the PTC cutting jet forces the tool against the

wall of the pipe; the high frictional forces between the

PTC and the wall of the pipe are greater than the thrust

forces exerted by the pressure bubble, stabilizing the

perforator to make the cut. It is this feature that allows

MCR’s perforators to function properly in plugged pipe

situations.

Plug settingTotal supplier of explosive services

A wide range of setting tools is available, enabling us to

set almost any plug available on the market.

Owen single stage setting tools are compact units in

which the burning of a power charge produces high

pressure gas that elongates the tool, providing the

necessary stroke to set conventional bridge plugs etc.

ALTUS Intervention can supply permanent bridge plugs from Owen, tubing/casing sizes ranging from 2.375 in OD to

9.625 in OD and larger upon request.
