Spring 2003.
Logic Platinum was the first audio/MIDI host
application available for Mac OS X, and Version
6 now introduces a dazzling array of features
that enhance usability, while further consoli-
dating its reputation for technical excellence.
In addition to the extensive feature set of
Logic 5, the new Version 6 offers the Logic
Setup Assistant, Project Manager, Offline
Bounce, Freeze Tracks, new Channel EQ,
Automation Groups and much more.
Arrange and Matrix Window Enhancements
Version 6 greatly simplifies audio editing
directly within Logic’s Arrange window, mak-
ing production tasks even faster and more
intuitive. First up, the Mixer channel strip of
the currently selected track is now visible in
the parameter area to the left of screen.
Enhanced zoom functionality now allows
sample-level display of audio regions directly
in the Arrange window. A new Marquee tool
allows the selection of portions of regions and
sequence objects, for independent editing. A
number of viewing options allow you to inde-
pendently hide/show Arrange window tracks.
The enhanced Time Machine (featuring an
entirely new algorithm) offers outstanding
new time stretching and pitch shifting func-
tionality directly in the Arrange window. These
allow you to stretch selected regions to match
the length defined by the locators, or adjust
the region length to the closest whole number
of bars. Smart Snap enhances the dragging,
moving and resizing of objects in both the
Arrange and Matrix windows. This facility is
tied to the current zoom level, and makes
these operations even more intuitive. Not only
does Logic 6 feature colourful new Arrange
icons, but user-defined icons can also be
inserted. The Matrix window now displays mul-
tiple selected notes as a chord name in the
Info Line.
The Project Manager
The Project Manager allows you to manage all
media files (audio, settings, EXS instruments,
movies and songs) on all connected volumes.
The Project Manager scans all drives and rec-
ognizes dependencies, such as which audio
files and EXS Instruments belong to which
song, and which samples belong to which EXS
Instrument. The Project Manager has sophisti-
cated options to make file management,
archiving and transporting of all files in a proj-
ect a breeze. Searches are easy and fast, with
user-definable search filters. A global “Save as
Project...” option is also available.
New Video Facilities
A new Video Thumbnail track in the Arrange
window can display still images of a Quick-
Time video horizontally along the track.
Zooming in displays additional frames in the
Logi
c 6
track. Furthermore you can play back DV
movies via any connected FireWire device.
Channel EQ Plug-In
Logic 6 features a new channel EQ plug-in
which sets new standards in sound quality
and ease of use. It offers eight bands: a high-
pass filter, a low shelving EQ, four parametric
EQ bands, a high shelving EQ and a lowpass fil-
ter. All bands are fully parametric (including Q
for the filters). There is also a very useful inte-
grated graphic FFT signal analyzer.
Freeze Tracks
Given the ever-increasing native processing
requirements of modern software instru-
ments and effect plug-ins, there may be occa-
sions when your computer is over-extended.
Typically, the more resource-intensive plug-
ins are software instruments and reverb, filter
and FFT effects. To circumvent such processor
overloads, Logic 6 features the ingenious new
“Freeze” function on audio and audio instru-
ment tracks. Use is simple – just click on the
“freeze” button of the desired track, and the
combination of audio file or audio instrument
part, plus all effects, will be rendered to a new
audio file. This new file will be played back in
place of the original track, thereby freeing up
resources. Tracks can be unfrozen at any time,
for further tweaking or editing.
Mixer Groups
Each Mixer channel can be assigned to one or
multiple of 32 possible Groups. The following
properties can be set for each Group: Name,
temporarily disabling, Arrange Selection (“Edit
Groups”), Arrange Track Zoom, Hide, Record,
Automation Mode, Volume, Mute, Pan,
Surround, Send 1-8 (individually), Input
Routing, Output Routing. Group facilities can
also be accessed from a Logic Control.
The Logic Setup Assistant
Mac OS X users can make use of the Logic
Setup Assistant (LSA) to set up their Logic
system. The LSA conveniently guides you
through the process of scanning for, and
selecting, your audio and MIDI interface,
desired number of tracks and channels in the
Logic Mixer, desired keyboard layout and
shortcut keys used, auto-adaptation of screen
layouts to your monitor(s) resolution, plus the
setup of MIDI devices – listed by manufactur-
er. Starting with Logic has become a breeze.
Offline Bounce
Logic 6 offers two methods for “bouncing”
tracks. The realtime bounce allows live inputs
to be recorded, in addition to audio and audio
instrument tracks. The offline bounce renders
audio and audio instrument tracks in faster
than real-time.
MP3 Support
Logic 6 now offers the importing and export-
ing of MP3 files. Imported files are automati-
cally converted, ensuring optimal perform-
ance. MP3 export is performed as a conver-
sion in the Audio window or as an additional
option in the Bounce dialog. You have a range
of bit rate choices available, plus control over
different encoding methods and filter options.
Expanded Control Surface Support
Logic Audio, Gold and Platinum all now native-
ly support the Logic Control and Tascam US-
428 / US-224 hardware controllers. Logic
Platinum also offers additional support for the
Mackie HUI or HUI emulation of Yamaha
DM2000/1000, 02R96, the Motormix from
C.M. Automation/Digidesign, the Roland SI-24
and Radikal SAC-2k, SAC-2.2 (SAC-8X support
is planned).
