Introduction Social networking has become a key element of the web. It started as a way for people to communicate and share ideas with friends and family, but has now evolved into something more. Nowadays, social networks are deeply integrated into millions of websites and define the way in which we interact with them, whether we are logging in with our social accounts, sharing content, or staying up-to-date on our friends’ activities on third-party websites. The objective of this whitepaper is to understand how social networks are faring in social authentication and the Social Sharing space; and, in turn, help businesses to make better decisions in their choice of social networks for Social Login as well as Social Sharing. Social Network Preference Statistics For the first quarter of 2013, we analyzed data collected by the LoginRadius platform, which supports more than 50,000 customers (websites) globally, to understand trends in social media. During this period, our platform supported 26 authentication providers for Social Login and more than 60 Social Sharing networks. 1. Social Network Preferences by Website Owners Our analysis showed that website owners typically choose multiple social networks for Social Login on their website. On average, they choose 5 Social ID providers from LoginRadius’ platform to integrate on their website.

The above graph shows that Facebook is the most widely used ID provider, followed by Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, and Yahoo. Persona, an online identity launched by Mozilla, has also gained a lot of traction among website owners. Among the top ID providers, only Vkontakte (a popular Russian social network) is region-specific; the rest are used internationally. 2. Social Network Preference by Users Again, Facebook dominates as the top preferred social network among users for authentication. Interestingly, Yahoo and Google are the next two ID providers of choice among end users, as compared to Twitter among website owners.
