What do people in the Logisticsindustry think about the course?

In 2003, Haulier William Armstrong Group launched its ownapprentice scheme in partnership with Logistics ExcellenceNorth East (LENE).

Armstrong's Training Manager Steve Whyberd said, "Theapprentices are highly motivated because most training is onthe job. They start with forklift truck driving. At 17 they taketheir car driving test and start local delivery work. At 18 theypass the test for rigid vehicles. They then progress to theadvanced apprenticeship, learning to drive our 44 ton articulatedvehicles, plus they take the specialised qualification in livestocktransportation."

What our customers andlearners say

Apprentice Thomas Pattinson 18, is already a qualified forklifttruck driver. He has his car licence and was one of the youngestpeople in the country to pass the Category C driving qualificationfor rigid vehicles. Thomas says, "My mates think it's unreal. Ialready have my own car and travel around doing a reallyresponsible job. My wages go up as I progress within thecompany. When I'm fully qualified I will be earning between£20,000 and £24,000 per year, not bad for someone under 20!"

Lifelong learning certainly appeals to Katrina, who is determinedto move onto Level 6 and achieve her Member (CIPS) qualification. She says, "If anyone has any doubts about joining the course Iwould encourage them to do so, as I thought about starting thecourse for a long time before I got round to joining, and nowwish I had started sooner". Joanna Jackson, the course mentorsays, "Katrina is an excellent example of what can be achievedwith the right attitude and dedication. Progressing from Level 3to Level 5 is a great achievement and one that Katrina shouldbe proud of."

After leaving school, Susan studied for the NVQ Level 3 in DrivingGoods Vehicles. She says, "LENE were brilliant and gave me alot of support. Completing this training has changed the courseof my life completely. I had no ambition of being a wagon driverand the other drivers laugh because I have long nails which arealways painted. My job allows me to supportmy horses and continue my riding. Before I used to miss trainingor competitions because I couldn't afford them, but I can now."

Susan's ambition is to pass a higher qualification in transportmanagement so she can run her own haulage business.

"The course covers everything to do with running your owncompany. I want to take the international version so I canrun wagons abroad."
