on a journey from Brazil to Switzerland to El Salvador to America, and straight

worth!"

LOL: Smashing Stage Debut
UCLA graduate Mina Olivera did the Bruins
proud this weekend starring in LOL (Latina on the
Loose). This fascinating autobiographical one-
woman play is written by and starring this 28-year-
old Brazilian beauty. LOL is her story: how she
came to this country by way of Switzerland and El
Salvador to study acting. She not only conquered
the English language but is a terrific mimic,
lampooning Anglos and other Latinas one after the
other.
LOL is listed as a comedy; but it begins with
the tragic death of Mina’s aunt years before her
birth and ends with the death of her grandmother
when she is a young woman. Oh yes, there are
plenty of chistes, but my tears flowed at the end of
the play because of the touching, beautiful story,
well-written and well-acted.
Don’t miss LOL, Latina on the Loose by
and starring Mina Olivera. Directed by Alberto
Barboza. Produced by Miguel Angel Caballero and
Paul Munoz. Scenic and Projection Design by
Christopher Ash. Choreography by Irani Dasilzva.
Mina’s dancing was fantastic.
LOL is at the Los Angeles Theater Center
(LATC) during October, 2009. Call (213)489-0994

mais de Mina Olivera.
Luciana Chama – Mina, pa-
rabéns pela performance.
Adorei o texto. O que te levou
a escrevê-lo?
Mina Olivera – Primeiro, por
causa da minha avó. Eu sempre
senti culpa, pois ela morreu e eu
estava aqui. A gente tinha um
relacionamento único e eu sem-
pre gostei de repetir as histórias
dela. Minha avó sempre foi mui-
to verdadeira, até no episódio
do dia em que cheguei em casa
e tinha um recado na secretária
eletrônica dizendo “Neguinha,
tô indo pro hospital e é pra
morrer, viu? Só tô ligando pra
despedir.Te amo, adeus, tchau”.
LC – Ela falou assim mesmo?
MO – Falou, cheguei em casa
e quase morri (risos). Engraça-
do que, hoje, penso que minha
avó estava me dando todas as
falas para o meu primeiro traba-
lho como escritora e eu que não
estava sabendo! Outro motivo
foi porque eu queria passar a

aqui me adiantou: não conte
com o público brasileiro! Mas
quando fui pedir apoio ao Con-

ao vice-cônsul “Dorival, pode

vou contar com o povo brasilei-

teatro. Eu sei que se eles virem

Mina Olivera excels in her hit play, "LOL! Latina On The Loose."

Mina Olivera-Latina On The Loose
By Buddy Sampson
The beautiful, but unassuming actress is preparing for her appearance on stage at the
Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC) to perform her play "LOL! Latina On The
Loose!," a critically acclaimed play that's receiving its share of well-deserved praise.
While getting her hair and make up done, Mina Olivera, the writer and performer of
the play, expressed her surprise at all the attention LOL has received. "I feel great,"
she laughed. "It exceeded all my expectations and I just love talking to people
afterwards and see how moved they were and what surprised me was guys are
actually the ones that cry the most at the end of the play."
Indeed, Mina Olivera, originally from Brazil, tells a story of her childhood, her
travels around the world and the sexism and racism she encounters along the way to
Hollywood to pursue an acting career. Like many talented performers who are able to
weave a poignant story, interspersing it with comedy, Olivera paints a wonderful
canvas, filled with laughs, sadness and fun. She chronicles her adjustment to a new
life in California, radically different from the world she has come to know in Brazil,
El Salvador and Switzerland. Directed by Alberto Barboza and produced by Miguel
Angel Caballero, "LOL! Latina on the Loose!" is an absolute masterpiece, a certified
hit.
Olivera does various styles of dance, in LOL!, from ballet, to hip hop to meringue, to
modern, illustrating her tremendous command of dance. "When I was a child, I
thought I was going to be a dancer," said Olivera. "I did ballet my whole life. When
my body started to develop, I noticed I didn't look like a dancer anymore. I wanted to
be a ballerina."
During the performance, she fondly imitates her grandmother, who cared for her
while her mother, Armenia, an activist and former member of the United Nations,
traveled the world on various missions. "She was really important to me," she said
about her grandmother, who died two days after she left for California for a role
playing a prostitute, a role she eventually turned down. "I dedicated this (play) to
her. I did that mistake, I left when she was sick. It was my way of honoring her."
One of the issues Olivera addresses in the play is the lack of Latina roles in
Hollywood, illustrated by her magnificent portrayal of a college counselor. "I learned
that back when I went to UCLA," she said. "We really just have to start creating our

Theatre: LOL: Latina on the Loose By Angela Gomez
When I walked into the Los Angles Theatre, I was greeted by an illuminated stage that
was painted with portions of South America kissing North America. As Mina commands
the stage (which is a hard feat being a petite woman), she recounts the memories
bestowed upon
her from her
Grandmother. She
wades through
the romancing
and courtship
between her
Grandfather and
Grandmother and
the adamant
stubbornness that
began the deep
roots in an
elaborate family
tree. Mina is a
part of a free
spirited family
fighting through
the waves of death, transcontinental moves, and civil war with success and quiet
candor.
I must take a moment and recognize Mina’s bravery for entrusting the audience with
her most treasured memories and darkest moments that embraced her intimately
throughout her life. Her main constant, her Grandmother, became the voice of reason
and beam of encouragement during her blackest nights. Her Grandmother taught Mina
her worth not only as a woman but as a Latina woman.
Her journey from Brazil to Switzerland back to Brazil to El Salvador to San Francisco
was enthusiastically retold in vivid imagery and peppered wit stories that reinforced her
quest for self worth recognition within herself and romantic relationships. As she relived
her controlling and machismo relationship with a beau in El Salvador and was victorious
as she left the man, laughs came rolling from my lips as I contemplated laughing
through such a serious moment in her life which was presented with comedic style and
flair.
This play touched me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. Like Mina, my own
Grandmother
taught me my
worth and taught
me that I
deserved the love
that only a special
man could provide
to me. Unlike
Mina, I have not
been in a
physically and
emotionally
abusive
relationship and
do not know if I
would be able to
walk away with
her dignity intact.
As a single spotlight towards the end of the play, an unusually morose Mina reflects on
Alumna to star in one-woman showWriter and actress Mina Olivera worked with fellow UCLA alumni to put togetherher new autobiographical showBy Jennifer BastienOct. 5, 2009 at 1:36 a.m.
You’ll often hear college students complain about assignments that are just busy work,
time fillers, not worth their ever-important and rapidly disappearing free time.
But for Mina Olivera, an innocuous assignment about her life as a class assignment at the
UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television led to a whole lot more, having inspired her
new play, currently showing at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.
Though it took her seven years to really pursue it, the positive responses Olivera received
planted the seed for what has become her one-woman show, “LOL! Latina on the Loose,”
which follows her life from Brazil to Switzerland to El Salvador and finally to America.
After working as an actress in Los
Angeles after graduating in 1999,
frustrations with roles in the
industry led her to focus on her
own writing, and last year she
presented her idea for a
one-woman show to her good
friend, fellow Theater, Film and
Television alumnus Miguel Angel
Caballero, the producer of “LOL!”
It was after a dinner one night
during which Olivera came out as one of the characters, that Caballero decided to help
produce it.
“It was the funniest thing that I had ever seen. So she kind of pulled a fast one on me
because she knew I was going to love it, and then I just got completely involved,”
Caballero said.
Now there’s a whole host of UCLA alumni involved, foremost of which is Alberto
Barboza, the director, who first worked with Olivera at the Latino Theater Company.
Working along with them are recent alumni Francois-Pierre Couture, set designer; Marika
Stephens, associate set designer; Emarie Kohlmoos, the costume designer; and Sohail
Najafi, the lighting designer.
“When you’re working with people from your school, there’s a lot of unifying elements,
past experiences, teachers, and hoops you had to jump through,” Najafi said. “It strikes me
that even over a decade, a lot of the experiences and challenges are the same.”
Though Barboza had little experience directing one-person shows, he said it worked to
their advantage.
“I didn’t have a preconception of what one-person shows should be, so that allowed us to
be a little more free with the form,“ Barboza said.
Freedom was something that was important to Olivera, not only in the structure of the
show, but in her acting career in general – the original motivation behind her decision to
pursue writing.
“I felt like I was waiting for things to happen, when I wanted to take command and
control of my career,” Olivera said.
A large inspiration for the play came from Olivera’s grandmother, whose advice to her was
always, “Show them your worth!” Olivera said that it was two days after she left Brazil for
Los Angeles that her grandmother passed away.
What did the Audience say about LOL! Latina on the Loose!
Mina, it was a tremendous pleasure to see your performance on Sunday. You were fabulous and it reminded me of my own experiences in many ways. You have a powerful story and would like to encourage others to see you. In many ways it is a healing story so thank you for that. Please send me updates about the production and let me know if there is ever any other way I can provide support.
All the best,

Dear Amigos,This is my second time going to see Mina's play, and each time it's so funny & touching at the same time. I love how she takes you to all those places as if you were there. Oh, and how she weaved her grandmother into the story is so beautiful! All my best!,] Jessy C. Morales.
LOL commentThe play was performed seamlessly and Mina absorbed us (my wife & I) into her life as she walked us through it. The psychology, emotions, and experiences seemed honest and sincere. It was congruent and nothing was left to attack its integrity. Mina portrayed someone that everyone in the theater could identify as real and genuine. It didn't seem as though she was portraying a character but rather being herself. So, everything she did was successfully transposed into the psychosocial and emotional realm of life and the audience identified with all of it. I am a realist and I am quick to pick up on contrived bits. I saw none in your play. Congratulations Mina, Beto, and Miguel.
Jeannette Maya RomoHello Mina! Thank you, Thank you for sharing your talent with us. How blessed you are to have an audience to share the legacy of your Abuelita. Your abuelita has now touched the lives of many because of YOU! :) How Special! You are an incredible actress and Beautiful to boot!
