Overview Academy Travel is pleased to team up with two of Australia’s premiere arts organisations, Sydney Festival and Australian Chamber Orchestra, to present a tour for lovers of music, theatre and dance. Our 2016 journey travels to the UK’s best summer arts festivals, culminating in six nights at the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe Festival where we will be joined by Sydney Festival Director, Wesley Enoch. You’ll be taken behind the scenes, meeting performers and directors, attending rehearsals and private receptions. There’s also the chance to enjoy the English countryside at its finest. The program begins in London, where The Proms season is in full swing, with a trip to the Glyndebourne Opera Festival before heading north to Stratford-upon-Avon then on to Edinburgh. Extended stays in centrally-located four-star hotels ensure there is time to relax between performances and enjoy the program. Accommodation, all land travel and sightseeing, receptions with performers, several meals and the best available tickets to at least 13 performances are included in the tour price.

Performance program

We’re delighted to offer an exciting and varied program of 13 performances, two featuring the Australian Chamber Orchestra. As the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival launch their full programs in April 2016, we don’t have all performance details yet, but already the fascinating program includes:

Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake, performed by the incomparable Bolshoi Ballet from Moscow at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden

Janacek’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival

Shakespeare’s great tragedy Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s summer festival at Stratford-upon-Avon

Ben Jonson’s hilarious comedy The Alchemist, also at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s summer festival at Stratford-upon-Avon

A rare opportunity to hear legendary Italian soprano Cecilia Bartoli in Bellini’s great bel canto opera Norma at the Edinburgh International Festival

A new late romantic ACO orchestral concert at the Edinburgh International Festival, with music by Mahler and Wagner

The National Theatre of Scotland’s production of Anything That Gives Off Light, premiering at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2016

The spectacular Royal Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle Four further performances at the Edinburgh International Festival and

the Edinburgh Fringe, details to be confirmed in April

Thursday July 28 Arrive London

Friday July 29 The ACO IN LONDON

This morning we head to Cadogan Hall to watch the ACO’s final rehearsal for this evening’s opening performance. Together with the legendary Australian entertainer Barry Humphries, the ACO has created an evening of Weimar Cabaret, with songs, readings and orchestral pieces, presented as part of the BBC Proms series. As well as lighter music-hall pieces, more serious orchestral works reflect the difficult days of Germany between the wars. After the rehearsal there will be a brief opportunity to meet some of the ACO players and to learn more about the evening’s performance. We then head to a local Belgravia restaurant for a welcome lunch. The later afternoon is free before we return to Cadogan Hall for our first concert. (B, L)

Performance details Venue: Cadogan Hall Program: A Weimar Cabaret Performers: The Australian Chamber Orchestra, led by Richard Tognetti, with Barry Humphries

Saturday July 30 The Bolshoi at Covent Garden

The morning is free and we suggest a visit to the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery or the National Gallery, all within comfortable walking distance of our hotel. In the early afternoon we walk to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, for an afternoon performance by Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet. In a time-honoured tradition, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake will be performed. (B)

Sunday July 31 Opera at Glyndebourne

This morning tour leader Antony Jeffrey provides a background talk for today’s performance. This afternoon we head south to the Sussex Downs for a performance of Janacek’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen at

Glyndebourne. Held on a private estate since 1934, Glyndebourne productions are justly famous for their impeccable musical standards and refreshing design and direction. Melly Still's colourful 2012 production of Janacek’s charming tale is no exception. (B)

Monday August 1 Travel to Stratford – The alchemist

We depart London by coach this morning, bound for Stratford-upon-Avon. We travel via the charming Cotswolds district, stopping at Bourton-on-the-water for refreshment. On arrival at Stratford there will be time to settle in before we head out for a casual pre-theatre dinner and our performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s intimate Swan Theatre. Ben Jonson’s The Alchemist was first performed in 1610 and is considered a masterpiece of Jacobean satire, and a wonderful vehicle for the RSC’s brand of comedic performance. The new production is directed by Polly Findlay, much praised for her RSC productions in recent years. (B, D)

Performance details Venue: Swan Theatre Program: Ben Jonson, The Alchemist Performers: Royal Shakespeare Company actors, Polly Findlay (director)

Tuesday August 2 Stratford and Beyond

This morning a local guide will introduce us to some of Stratford’s highlights, introducing us to the town’s history and in particular with sites associated with Shakespeare. In the later afternoon we travel to Charlecote Park, a short distance from Stratford. This fine Elizabethan and Jacobean manor house has been beautifully restored by the National Trust, and we take a relaxing stroll through the gardens and tour the interior. (B)

Wednesday August 3 The RSC’s Hamlet

Today is free to relax in Stratford and perhaps visit Shakespearean sites such an Anne Hathaway’s cottage and the farm of Mary Arden, Shakespeare’s mother. This evening we stroll to the main Royal Shakespeare Theatre for their production of Hamlet. This remarkable production, directed by Simon Godwin stars Paapa Essiedu in the title role, with a mainly-black cast. (B)

Thursday August 4 To Edinburgh via YORK

A long day’s travel takes us north to Edinburgh. We travel via the historic city of York. Roman in origin and with strong Viking connections, the town centre is rich in heritage. Our brief stop will allow us to visit the spectacular gothic architecture of York Minster and to wander the medieval streets. We arrive in Edinburgh in the early evening and there is a casual dinner in our hotel. (B, D)

Friday August 5 A tale of two towns – National theatre of Scotland

This morning we take a tour of Edinburgh organised through the Fringe Festival. Entitled A tale of two towns, the tour uses oral history and storytelling to take you through the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town districts of the city. A centrepiece of the Edinburgh International Festival is a new production by the National Theatre of Scotland. This evening we will see their new work, Anything that gives off light. The play deals with national identity – a Scottish man living in London returns home, meets a lonely American woman and travels through Scotland. The play is punctuated with live Scottish-American folk music. (B, L)

Performance details Venue: King’s Theatre Program: Anything that gives off light Performers: Written and directed by Rachel Chavkin and Davey Anderson, with Brian Ferguson, Sandy Grierson and Jessica Almasy

Saturday August 6 The ACO in Edinburgh and The Tattoo

This morning there is a background talk on tonight’s performance by the ACO at the Edinburgh International Festival, the opening orchestral performance of the Festival. The morning is free, and we highly recommend a visit to the National Gallery of Scotland, containing a superb collection of European and British art. Rather unusually, the ACO will be performing works from the German Romantic Repertoire, featuring the music of Wagner and Brahms. Full details of the performance program will be available when the Festival program is launched in April 2016. Right after the ACO concert we head to the parade grounds below Edinburgh Castle for the 10.30pm performance of the famous Royal Military Tattoo. Our late-night performance has extended fireworks. There is a casual dinner before the concert. (B, D) Performance details Venue: Usher Hall Program: Orchestral music by Wagner and Brahms Performers: The Australian Chamber Orchestra, led by Richard Tognetti

We continue our exploration of the main festival today, with an afternoon recital or chamber music concert, most likely held in one of Edinburgh’s historic churches. The Edinburgh International Festival is renowned for the quality and variety of the international dance, music and theatre companies invited to perform. In the evening, we will attend a performance by one of these visiting international companies, with pre-performance talks. (B)

Tuesday August 9 Royal Yacht Britannia – Norma

In the late morning we travel to Edinburgh’s port of Leith to take a short tour of the Royal Yacht Britannia, a fascinating insight into the royal lifestyle. Nearby is the award-winning restaurant The Kitchin, where we share a farewell lunch. This afternoon, tour leader Antony Jeffrey provides a pre-performance talk on Bellini’s bel canto masterpiece Norma, and the performing career of its star mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. The celebrated production premiered for the Salzburg Festival in 2012. (B)

HOTELs

LONDON, the Bloomsbury Hotel (4 nights)

This elegant four-star hotel is housed in a heritage building designed by the famous English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. It has tastefully appointed public areas and comfortable well-sized rooms. But its best feature is the location, on a quiet part of Great Russell Street in Bloomsbury, in the heart of the theatre district, within walking distance of most London shows. Covent Garden, Soho and the shops of Oxford Street are all within a 10-minute walk. www.thedoylecollection.com

Stratford, Holiday Inn (3 nights)

We have selected this hotel for its excellent riverside location, close to RSC theatres and the historic centre of Stratford. As one expects from the Holiday Inn chain the rooms are functional but lacking in character. www.holidayinn.com

Edinburgh, Apex Waterloo (6 nights)

Academy Travel has used this centrally-located four star hotel on two previous tours to Edinburgh. The location is excellent and the rooms and public areas are of a high standard. www.apexhotels.co.uk

Weather on tour The weather in England and Scotland in summer is generally mild and pleasant, but it is also famously variable! Expect daytime temperatures to range between 14 and 25 degrees. Evenings can be noticeably cooler, requiring a warmer jacket and perhaps a scarf. There is always the possibility of some rainfall at both our destinations, so a weather-proof jacket and umbrella are recommended.

Additional travel AND stopovers

We are more than happy to arrange additional travel either before or after the tour dates. Stopovers on the outbound or return flight are also possible for those wishing to break their journey. Please contact Erin Laffin on (02) 9235 0023 to discuss your requirements.

About Academy TravelEach year Academy Travel organises around 50 journeys to Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia and the Americas, each focusing on a distinctive historical, artistic or cultural theme. The aim of every Academy Travel journey is to combine the pleasures of independent travel with the benefits and shared enjoyment of a group. Academy Travel is an Australian-owned travel company, founded in 2004. The company’s staff includes both academic experts and travel professionals with over two decades’ industry experience. We also have our own office in Rome which organises our tours in Western Europe. This means we have direct control over the selection of hotels, restaurants, coaches and local guides, guaranteeing superior quality.

In-depth informationWith extensive printed tour materials, including detailed tour notes, destination guides, and daily programs, you’ll build up a coherent understanding of the country you’re visiting, not just a fragmented set of facts. These materials are also available in electronic format.

Carefully planned itinerariesAll itineraries feature a carefully thought out balance of walking tours, gallery and museum visits, scenic excursions, dining and performances.

Like-minded groupsShare your journey with fellow travellers who are in tune with your way of seeing the world. A maximum of 20 participants – not too small and not too large – creates a convivial atmosphere.

Long staysPerhaps the most appealing feature of our program. No whistlestop tours, no 7.00am departures, day after day. In most destinations we enjoy three or four nights to really get to know the place.

Special experiencesA private viewing of the Sistine Chapel or the Museum of Modern Art in New York? Tickets to a sold-out performance of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra? Many of our tours feature top-flight events not usually offered on group tours.

Expert tour leadersOur tour leaders combine academic expertise with a genuine passion for the places you visit. Under their expert guidance you see rather than just look, hear rather than just listen and understand rather than just observe. Your travel experience is transformed.
