ISSUE 27 JANUARY 2012

Dear LSR member,

On Monday 30th January we’re hosting an Insider-Outsider analysis of Apple which I

recommend to anyone interested in the company’s internal structures, product

design processes, culture and, generally, hearing two incredibly smart guys talk

about why it continues to be such a success. Adam Lashinsky is the author of

#InsideApple, which was published on Wednesday. Horace Dediu is the founder of

Asymco.com, often referred to as the  "outsider" Apple analyst  and someone who

sees things in data that mean so much, but that most people miss.

We’re looking for someone to video this event, if you’d like to help please get in

touch!

February is going to be the month of mobile! We have a Masterclass on Best

Practice in Mobile App Development and Marketing on 15th Feb and the BeMyApp

mobile app hack weekend  will be taking place 24-26th Feb. And that's not even

mentioning that MWC is also on the way...

We’re currently looking to expand the list of venues we use around London so if

you have a space which can be used to bring our members together, I’d love to

hear from you.

TechMeetups is now in 8 cities! We recently added Bangalore, Bangkok, Miami and

Singapore to our network so look out for new connections with startups in those

cities through our meetups soon.

Adam Lashinsky, author of the acclaimed new

book Inside Apple, to present to London’s tech community  – January 25, 2012

Adam Lashinsky, Fortune magazine’s Senior Editor-at-large, will be presenting his

observations on Apple from the past fifteen years on a fly-by visit to London during

a special TechMeetups event.

New York wants to be a subsequent Silicon Valley – January 25, 2012

For years now opposite cities not usually in a U.S. though opposite a universe have

hoped to turn a subsequent Silicon Valley though nothing of them have somewhatcome tighten to contest opposite a Tech Capital of a world. But it’s good famous

news that New York City has been strongly creation efforts to win that crown.

Silicon Alley Gets (Statistical) Backing – January 24, 2012

A report released Wednesday by real estate services company CBRE Group Inc adds

empirical evidence to claims that Manhattan’s Midtown South really is Silicon Alley.

In Front of Technology Comes Communication  – January 24, 2012I distinctly remember being bored by ICT lessons; maybe it was because little focus

was paid to the middle-letter in the acronym, which stands for communications.

Recently we’ve heard a great deal from industry experts and educationalists about

the need to radically overhaul how ICT is taught in schools – it is purportedly even a

necessary factor in the rebalancing of our economy  – but I believe the arguments

put forward fall short because they ignore that pesky C-word.

Why be a Part of BeMyApp?  – January 24, 2012BeMyApp weekends (@bemyapp) took London’s tech community by storm in 2011

and the movement is set to get even bigger in 2012. It’s easy to see why mobile

hackathons like BeMyApp are so popular—hackathons present an exciting platform

for developers, designers, marketers and app idea generators to meet up and work

on collaborative app projects. Participants come together to work on an idea over a

weekend with the aim of having an at least part-working prototype in 48 hours.

NYC to Open Its First Software Engineering High School  – January 23, 2012

New York City is taking another step toward becoming Silicon Alley — the East

Coast’s own tech hub —  with the grand opening of the city’s first software

engineering-specialized high school.

Silicon Valley Taunts NYC Over Tech Aspirations  – January 23, 2012

It looks like Silicon Alley has a way to go before it’s taken seriously by its west coast

counterpart. This weekend, the San Jose Mercury News published a piece of snark

ridiculing New York City’s would-be role as tech usurper.

Yahoo! Cheerio to the chief  – January 22, 2012

FOND of his informal title of “chief Yahoo”, Jerry Yang has been an influential figure

at the internet firm for many years. But on January 17th Yahoo! announced that Mr

Yang, who co-founded the business in 1995 with David Filo, had resigned from its

board of directors and would also step down from all other positions he holds at the

firm. He is likely to be followed out of the door by a number of other board

members in coming weeks.

Internet regulation: Black ops – January 22, 2012

ON JANUARY 18th a slew of prominent websites, including Wikipedia, Reddit andMozilla, will show the world what they might look like if two bills under debate in

America’s Congress come into force. For twelve hours starting at 8am Eastern time

(1pm GMT) the portals’ pages will go black. Wikipedia will be dark for all of

Wednesday Eastern time (starting at 5am GMT). Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s founder,

has already advised students in a tweet to do their homework early.

A SOPA/PIPA Blackout Explainer – January 21, 2012

Hundreds, if not thousands, of websites are expected to go dark or alter themselvesWednesday to protest proposed U.S. anti-piracy legislation that many believe goes

too far fighting online copyright and trademark infringement.

New Age Companies Promising Even

Better Tomorrow for Midtown South Owners  – January 21, 2012

Manhattan vacancy rates declined steadily into the fourth quarter of 2011 as a

continued wave of new age companies solidified Midtown South as the least vacant

central business district in the nation.

The history of London’s silicon roundabout  – January 21, 2012

If you find yourself circling a roundabout on the boundary between Hackney and

Islington, you will have little reason to think this is any different to the hundreds of

other roundabouts you’ve dizzied yourself with. But you’d be wrong – for Old Street

roundabout is the country’s tech hub, and it goes by the name of Silicon

Roundabout.
