Message from the Chair

Message from the Executive DirectorMessage from the Executive Director

Message from the Chair

ear Friends,With 2010 upon us,

we’ve stopped amidst the festivities to reflect on all that we are grateful for in 2009.

We are grateful that our East Branch received its reaccreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children

(NAEYC), joining our West Branch in being among only a select few organizations meeting the new, more strin-gent criteria required for accreditation.

We are thankful that more than 90 golfers hit the links for our 6th annual tournament, had flawless weather for a fun day, and raised close to $25,000 for LBDN.

We are grateful that we have strong Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) at each of our branches. From hosting informal events for parents to meet with center direc-tors, to parent workdays to fill in wood chips and sand, to garage sales, candy sales, opportunity drawings and other fund raisers – our PACs have set a high bar for parent engagement. Collectively, our PACs raised more than $3,500 for LBDN classrooms and we cannot thank them enough for their hard work.

We are thankful that we have reached over 75% of our fund-raising goal for the Stepping Stones to Success

scholarship program – with less than half the campaign year completed! These scholarships ensure that chil-dren whose families earn less than the median income but who do not qualify for state assistance receive the financial assistance that they need in order to attend LBDN.

We are grateful for the Rotary Club of Long Beach’s Operation Santa Claus, the City of Long Beach’s Police Department Motor Brigade, LBDN’s Board of Directors, Better Balance for Long Beach, Long Beach Rescue Mission, First Congregational Church, and First Lady of Long Beach Nancy Foster for making the holidays brighter for children and families in need.

We are thankful – and humbled – to have been named a laureate in education for the California Community Foundation’s Unsung Heroes Awards.

We are grateful that each and every day, the families of close to 250 children trust us with the care and education of their precious little ones. There can be no greater honor.

And most of all, we are grateful for our friends. It is because of you that we have been able to stay true to our mission for almost a century – to provide quality early care and education for young children of working families.

Sincerely,

Patrice Wong, Executive Director

Dearest Friends of Long Beach Day Nursery:Here we are again at the year end of another year

with the opportunity to look back at the year that was! Certainly, we are in a time unlike anything most of us have had to endure, and I hope that all of you have managed to survive it somewhat unscathed.

LBDN, while dealing with much of what many other busi-nesses and certainly many other nonprofits have had to deal with, has managed to keep its head above water. The truth is that without the love and support of friends like you, none of this would be possible. Your gifts to the Nursery continue to arrive and for that we are grateful.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lorie and Paul Merrill for their support and leadership in our Stepping Stones Scholarship campaign. As Pat indicated, we are just short of our goal so early in the campaign . . . WOW!

As we enter our 98th year, we do so with a great deal of optimism. We are proud that our agency is one of a small

number that has taken the time and effort to become accredited and successfully reaccredited. Congratulations to Center Directors Linda Blackshire (West Branch) and Shannon Deeter (East Branch) and their outstanding staffs for a job well done.

Let us never forget that we are building the leaders of tomorrow and we should all be proud to be part of it. We appreciate you remembering the Nursery when considering who and where to give your money. And, we urge you to consider becoming one of our first 100 Building Blocks for

the Future. We would love to give you more information about how to make that happen. See page 5 for details.

All The Best,

Parent and family involvement is very important at Long Beach Day Nursery. Now considered an industry best practice as well as a required program standard for accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), family involvement in early educa-tion is a relatively new concept. It has only been in the forty plus years since the ground-breaking launch of our country’s Head Start program that the concept of family engagement has emerged as a critical ele-ment. Today we have a whole body of research on what noted early education expert and advocate Dr. Karen Hill Scott describes as confirm-ing “what is implicitly known: parent involvement in a child’s development and education accelerates his or her progress and increases the child’s chances for success later in life.”

Parent involvement, family engagement, parent and family involvement – what do these phrases actually mean? NAEYC’s program standards describe family involvement as follows: “Young children’s learning and development are integrally connected to their families. Consequently, to support and promote children’s optimal learning and development, programs need to recognize the primacy of children’s families, establish relationships with families based on mutual trust and respect, support and involve families in their children’s educational growth, and invite families to fully participate in the program.”

At Long Beach Day Nursery, parent and family involvement takes many forms:Parent Workshops: We strive for quarterly workshops to provide informa-

tion on topical early education issues, such as early literacy development, kindergarten readiness, etc. Periodic surveys are undertaken to ensure relevant and meaningful workshop topics.

Communications: Classroom newsletters, individual daily reports in our infant and toddler program, classroom daily reports in our preschool program, bi-annual parent/teacher conferences and periodic and annual surveys are some of the ways that we ensure ongoing communication with families.

Our management staff maintains an open door policy to facilitate honest and constant two-way communication.

Volunteer Opportunities: Our Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) at each of our branches provides parents and family members the opportunity to volunteer to support Long Beach Day Nursery. Examples of PAC activities have included “Sundaes with Shannon” at the East Branch, giving all East Branch parents the opportunity to meet informally with Center Director Shannon Deeter; teacher appreciation activities at both the West Branch and East Branch to provide personal thank you notes to our teachers; and several successful fundraising events. Please see article on page 7 for more details on our most recent PAC fundraising successes!

“More Fun at Home:” Opportunities are created to engage parents and other family members in learning at home. Take-home libraries are available at both sites, including age-appropriate books, CDs, and cassettes. Take-home materials for our Early Intervention Program are also available, including games and books that support intervention strategies. Our partnership with the Long Beach Public Library’s Raising a Reader Program ensures parent engagement in reading a weekly rotation of award-winning children’s books

Governance: Our board of directors currently includes two members who are parents of children enrolled at Long Beach Day Nursery, ensuring a parent voice in decision making, governance and advocacy.

Community Collaboration: In order to ensure coordination of resources and services for families, Long Beach Day Nursery collab-orates with a number of organizations in our community. Direct service providers, such as Harbor Regional Center, the John Tracy Clinic, and the Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders; professional development resources, such as Long Beach City College, For the Child, and the Autism Partnership; and advo-cacy partners such as Beach Cities Association for the Education of Young Children, the Long Beach Early Childhood Education Committee, and the Los Angeles County Child Care Planning Committee are just some of our collaborators with whom we engage to maximize family resources.

ong Beach Day Nursery held its Sixth Annual Open Golf Tournament October 29th at Navy Golf Course in Cypress. Ninety golfers enjoyed a perfect fall day on the course, with box lunches provided

on their carts, goody bags chock-full of handy items; and a drink cart that circled the course to provide refreshments to the participants through-out the afternoon. Close to $25,000 net was raised to support the pro-grams and services of Long Beach Day Nursery, as it counts down to its 100th anniversary in 2012.

“There were many tournaments this fall, so we were pleasantly surprised with the turnout and the amount of money raised – both greater than last year’s event,” said Gregory Haeseler, committee chair and former LBDN chairman of the board. “Our silent auction and box auction were both very successful. We thank everyone who participated.”

The event culminated with a sumptuous 19th hole buffet in the Eagle’s Nest Clubhouse with centerpieces made using cheery sunflowers set in traditional flower pots, courtesy of Pots by Priscilla. Awards were given

to Bond Nichols and Tony Potenti who won the men’s division; Jan Faris and Jill Lindberger who won the women’s divi-sion; Jean Bixby Smith, LBDN honorary board member, and Bill Oberholzer who won the couples; Shirley Wild who won closest to the pin, and the longest drive award went to Russ Warnick, to name a few.

“I want to thank Steve Hockett, the new general manager of the Palos Verdes Golf Club, who was my co-chair and kept the tournament moving along,” Haeseler said. “Our goal was for everyone to have fun and finish in a timely manner. Steve made that happen and I know everyone was grateful.”

Thank you to Southern California Edison, a major sponsor for the event.

LBDN 2009 Open a Big SuccessLBDN 2009 Open a Big Success

On November 17, Deloris and Sandy Mayuga opened their beautiful home and sprawling lush garden to about 70 guests and community leaders who support quality early care and education for young children from low income families. The event recognized Lorie and Paul Merrill who are the honorary chairs for Long Beach Day Nursery’s Stepping Stones to Success scholarships campaign this year.

“We were thrilled with the turnout and very grateful to the Mayugas for hosting the reception,” said Jonathan Gotz, chair of the board. “I want to thank the board members who prepared the delicious food and supplied the beverages, as well,” he added.

The Stepping Stones to Success scholarship program helps to remove the financial barriers that families experience in obtaining quality early care and education for their children. The scholarships are designed to assist families earning between 75% and 100% of the state median income. This targets a gap that public (state) subsidies do not address – the working poor. This very special program was founded by honorary board member Barbara Gebb in the wake of the 1992 Civil Unrest in Los Angeles and Long Beach. And today, these scholarships are more important than ever due to the
