June LIDSBOARD
The Board met at the barn on June 16th to discuss club finances and to plan the fall Dahlia Shows. Our spring sales had been disappointing , however, I am pleased to report that two days later, our last Dahlia Sale was very successful and brought in much needed revenue to our treasury. Fund raising is a complicated and difficult problem. Our difficulties cannot, however, be attributed to lack of volunteers, effort or cooperation. The fundraising committee, board members and garden directors have worked extremely hard. Consider yourselves publicly and sincerely thanked, for donating, publicizing, schlepping, dividing prepping and selling and for giving so generously of your time. Big challenges remain, however and the Board will be taking the following steps to improve our situation:
1. The fundraising committee will grow a separate crop of border dahlias to be in bloom for sale by May 1st. We are urgently seeking some free, heated greenhouse space for this project.
2. The Garden Directors will assess the 2011 season; what was good, what was not so good, what changes in our practices need to be made to assure success in 2012 and will report to the Board in September. 3. The fundraising committee will try to beef up our raffles in the fall and have more things to sell in the courtyard in addition to flowers. 4. The Fundraising Committee will meet after the shows to assess what worked and what did not in 2011 and recommend suggestions and changes to the Board in November
Our Show Program has been revised to reflect changes made by the ADS and to provide the opportunity for LIDS members to sponsor cash Show Prizes. The “Show Patrons” will be eliminated and instead members who sponsor a $25.00, $15.00 or $10.00 prize may dedicate or name the prize. The Executive Director of the Arboretum, Nelson Sterner stopped by with his beautiful Labs. He will speak to us all at the July meeting. As always, you suggestions and ideas are welcome and you can express them via e mail to us at [email protected], in person, of course or by phone to any Board member.
For now, it‟s “bring on the dahlias”! See you in the Garden,
Maureen

TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS
“For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life - the light and the air which vary continually.
Claude Monet
It „s not too early to begin taking
photographs of the magnificent blooms in the
garden to show in our October LIDS
Photography Show. The dahlias in this issue
of the newsletter were all taken during the
past month at various times of the day. The
sunlight, shadows, wind, and varying
weather conditions each provide a totally
different look through the camera‟s lens.
Visit the garden often and take advantage of
these changes. You will never be bored.
There are so many possibilities. Pat

the symptoms, prune off and bring individual

leaves are difficult if not impossible to diag-
nose/ Take home information on non toxic
strategies for fighting earwigs, slugs, spider
mites, and more. Be ready for powdery
mildew which will be upon us shortly
We will be asking people to sign up for the show program dedication and the dahlia show committees at the meeting.

NEW AMERICAN DAHLIA SOCIETY (ADS) CLASSIFICATION CODE The next time that you are down to the garden, take the time to notice the labels on the
poles next to each dahlia, The labels contain a wealth of information. The dahlia is a plant that
celebrates diversity. The bloom‟s size range from the size of a quarter to the size of a dinner
plate. To the gardener‟s delight they come in 19 different forms and 16 different colors.
Look on the label and you will see the dahlia‟s name which is followed by its (American
Dahlia Society (ADS) number. You will see a 4 digit number. For example Long Island Lil
(#3003). The 1st digit is 3 which identifies it‟s size (3-BB). The 2nd digit designates the form
(FD-0). The 1st and 2nd digits in the next table designate all other forms. The last 2 digits
designate the predominate color (OR-03). Now look at Teasbrooke Redeye (#9008) which is
collarette (CO-90) and is a lavender on the color chart (L-08). Your can look on the
classification chart on the next page for all the dahlia names, forms, sizes, colors and their
abbreviations.
I hope to see you in the garden as you investigate and identify your favorite dahlias.
