Challenge: safety vs. diversity • Question:

– Can grazing be used as management tool to achieve goals for both nature conservation and flood defense?

• Project approach: – What are the main drivers for changes in

biological diversity in floodplain grasslands?

• Data: – Abiotic variables: soil type, flooding

frequency, topography

– Management variables: grazing regime, intensity, land-use history

– Biotic variables: changes in vegetation type, plant & butterfly diversity (1996 – 2008)

• Short grassland: 27% - 43% (+ 16%)

• Tall roughage : 4% - 5% (+ 1%)

• Shrubland : 0% - 5% (+5%)

• Forest: 14% - 13% (- 1%)

• Plant diversity: 23,1 – 38,5 (+ 14 species)

• Red list species : 8,6 – 14,3 (+ 5 species)

• Butterfly diversity: 12,5 - 14,2 (+ 2 species)
