SKI TRIP

This year we have booked Monday 24th June for our annual school ski trip to Mt Hutt.

Thanks to everyone who has returned their ski trip notices. If you haven’t please do so asap.

Students who are not going on the Ski Trip will be expected to attend school as normal and the school buses will be running as per normal, but obviously they will be earlier due to not very many pickups. Payments can now be made and must be paid by

Monday 17th June.

Dear Parents/Caregivers/Community of Longbeach School

Winter has definitely hit and Jack Frost has sure made himself known in the past few days. We are also very grateful that there is now snow on the mountains for our up coming ski trip to Mt Hutt (Monday 24th June).

In recent weeks the school has been hit by the flu. While the students are unwell we encourage them to stay away from school and ensure that they have plenty of rest and fluids.

Neil continues to recover from his broken leg and he appreciated last week receiving a care package from the community.

I would like to acknowledge our current nominees for the upcoming Board of Trustees elections which closed today and wish Jason Rickard, Amie Griffiths, Sonia Etheridge, Jason Vannini, Tony Durham, Tom Ward and Richard Wood, all the very best as we find out in the coming week who has been elected. It is tremendous to have people wanting to be part of our Board who are passionate and excited about the future of our school and community.

We are also very grateful for what parents/caregivers/wider community do for our school whether it is transporting students to various events (sporting or academic), lending vehicles, assisting with support in the classrooms, managing/coaching sports, marshalling, helping with fundraising, painting or acknowledging what we do at Longbeach School. It doesn't go unnoticed, so thank you.

We have a large amount of lost property accumulating in the box on the deck outside Rooms WIllowby and Ashton. This includes school uniforms as well as lunchboxes, drink bottles and a variety of other clothing etc. This will be displayed on Friday on the deck outside the junior rooms. If the items (excluding school uniforms) are not collected by the end of the term, they will be donated to charity.

Have a great weekend and keep warm and I wonder how many of you ski bunnies will hit the slopes this weekend for the opening of Mt Hutt?

STUDENT COUNCIL FUNDRAISER FOR CHILD CANCER -

Wednesday 19th June 2019 We are very excited to be taking part in ‘Wig Wednesday’ on

Wednesday 19th June to raise funds for Kiwi kids with cancer. It’s easy to take part – just wear a wig on the day and bring a

donation for Child Cancer Foundation. All funds raised will help support kids with cancer and their families

across New Zealand. Prefer not to buy a wig? You can make a wig using a template from the Wig Wednesday website, or an original wig or headpiece of your own. Create wacky hair using ribbons, clips, temporary colouring or

old-fashioned back-combing!

VOLUNTEER POSITION FOR A GARDENER

We are currently looking for a keen gardener to come in one lunchtime a week to work with and support our students with our school gardens.

Cross Country Results 2019 Congratulations to the following Longbeach students who gained places at this years Southern Cluster Cross Country, which was held at the Historic Stone Cottage up at Mt Somers Station. Absolutely awesome setting! Year 5 students and above who were placed in the top six for their year group are eligible to take part in the

Counties which was held on Tuesday 4th June. A big Congrats! To Tessa Macdonald and Taylor Lamont who qualified at the Mid-Canterbury Cross Country to

go on and compete at the Canterbury Cross Country! Good luck girls.

As you may have seen in the media, it’s shaping up to be a tough flu season, with flu already circulating widely across New Zealand, and Australia reporting a record number of flu cases and even deaths. Influenza infection rates are generally highest in children, and healthy children are the major cause of the spread of the virus in the community. You can spread the flu bug without knowing you have it – and the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable. Canterbury District Health Board is urging you to protect your whānau and the wider community by getting your flu shot as soon as possible. Getting your flu shot every year offers the best protection against the flu. Room Huntingdon… Room Huntingdon have been getting creative with their writing this term as they are working through their writing goals. Some students have worked collaboratively. ‘Hulks Life’ – Kamal Life was tough, being the Incredible Hulk. Having a tiring week (as per normal), but today was his day off. Walking the dog had always been one of Hulk’s favourite things to do on a Sunday. He could totally relax and put to the back

of his mind all of the things that had made him feel stressed during the week.

‘Dark Days’-Torry The air turned black all around me the eternal night was coming just as my fortune cookie said. I went for a run to try to take my mind off it as I felt the ground moving beneath my feet he was coming, the evil demon who was going to bring the eternal night upon us. The portal to the dark lands had opened the demon was almost here and the eternal night was starting. A giant beam of darkness shot up at the sun faster than a bullet, all of a sudden the sun turned black everyone stood and stared in amazement and disbelief. The darkness from the sun that is no longer a sun started to spread across the sky and before we knew it, the whole sky was black just as it was at night except this night never ended.

When We Were Young-Penny 4 years later… “Bob,” Jinx squealed, as she got wet. “Cut!,” screamed the director “HIS ROLE NAME IS MAX,” Jinx just rolled her eyes. She had to go change AGAIN! As they, restarted Bob/Max dived into the pool and hit his head. The pool turned a dark bloody colour Jinx screamed, “BOB, SOMEONE RING THE AMBULANCE”. He nearly died twice on the way to the hospital. He fought to stay alive but in less than an hour, he was rushed to the operating theatre. Jinx felt depressed and she felt week her best friend was close to death. She ran and ran away from the hospital.

Mad Hatter-Taylor “DING DONG” “Mum”, Yassy’s here. Daisy dashed down the stairs like a lightning bolt. “Hello, Yassy.” “Ello, Daisy.” “Mum says we have to venture outside.” “Ok, cool.” “RACE YA TO THE WOODS!” Daisy shrieked as she raced to the woods, with Yassy racing behind. Soon they reached the middle of the woods; there was a weird teashop there. Yassy soon pulled out her phone to check if this teashop was on google maps, but there was no service. She yelled, “OH COME ON, NO SERVICE!” “Let’s just go and explore instead” Daisy exclaimed. They saw tables and chairs set up like a cafe. They walk closer to it then out of nowhere, this big creepy psycho with loads of random hats on bounced out from behind a wall. It said in a low dark voice, “Hello,

Planet Giraffe-Yasmin Larry As I gaze at the tower of giraffes, I trip and collapse into a pile of poo. As I erase the

stinky, slimy, lumpy poop off my face, I look into the distance and can see two giraffes

fighting. I hear a piercing scream as if a little child being chased through a dark forest. I know that this will not end well. I sprint to

the fight and scream as loud as I can to STOP the horrendous fight. What I discover

is not the outcome that I had wanted.

The lost eye... – Alex, Jamieson, Cody and Joe It was a dark and stormy night. Zac was playing on his Xbox in his room. He just got a new game and he has been playing for hours. He heard something outside so he paused his game and had a look. Suddenly there was a flash of lightning and Zac saw something standing outside then it was gone. There was another flash of lightning and the thing was standing right in front of him the thing said in a blood-curdling growl! “Today is the day you will die! Today is the day we take over the world! Today everyone will fall in the hands of me! Fear me for I’m your worst enemy!”
