Instrumental Music teacher & Musica Viva visit

Last week we welcomed our new instrumental music teacher,Mr Bill Vincent, who will be with us until the end of the yearand potentially into 2018. Mr Vincent comes with a wealth ofexperience having played with and worked in the army corpsband for over 20 years. Bill’s passion is brass instruments buthe enjoys working with all instrument areas and we are pleasedthat he is able to provide instrumental lessons for our students.

This week we had the privilege of listening to “The Best ofBrass” band which came to Longreach SHS as part of theMusica Viva tour to outback Queensland. This dynamic groupentertained our students on Monday morning and explainedthe differences and sounds of various brass instruments. Anumber of students then had the opportunity to participate inspecialised workshops in the afternoon with a qualified musicinstructor.

Student Attendance

As we approach the end of the school year and some yearlevels begin to leave us for holidays it is important that everychild attends school every day. It has been pleasing to seethe increased attendance of students throughout 2017 and asa whole school we are currently sitting at 88.3%, up 2% onthe same period last year (that equates to an extra week ofschooling per child this year). Our school goal for this year is90% and we appreciate your efforts in ensuring that your childattends every day.

Those students who attend less than 90%, besides havingreduced learning opportunities, are also at risk of beingineligible to attend extra-curricular school activities such asrepresentative sport, year 12 graduation or camps.

In Pursuit of Happiness

Happiness - a state of mind or feeling suchas contentment, satisfaction, pleasure, orjoy. Wikipaedia

As human beings we all want to feel happyand not just every now and then. If we hadour way we would probably give sadness a

miss altogether. In our search for happiness we are often led tobelieve that if we owned more, bought more, achieved more orwon more we would find happiness, but is it found in spending, accumulating or competing with others? Sadly we may give ourchildren the impression that happiness is something you canbuy or conquer, or even worse, that someone else has controlof our happiness. The reality is, that if we get the ‘ingredients’right for happiness, then nothing can stop us from being happy, even in difficult times. It’s our choice.

A great religious leader of our times (the Dalai Lama) has adifferent focus on happiness when he states that truehappiness is found in kindness and compassion. He goes onto say that genuine happiness comes when you see someusefulness in your life. These qualities are not things you canhold or see, but they make you feel good, and they certainlyleave lasting impressions on other people.

In order to provide our children with the skills to pursuehappiness here are some suggestions.

Show by your example, encourage, or teach your child:

Happiness is not just about meeting our own needs. We aresocial beings. The more we connect with others and considerothers the easier will be our own pursuit of happiness.

Chappy’s CornerHi Everyone,

This is certainly a term where you hit the ground running.Chappy’s breakfasts have taken off again and are happeningin the cooking room Wednesday mornings. This is not just aplace to fill up on food but also a place to connect with othersand have some fun. Some students engaged in a game of Unowhile downing their breakfast. Others shared outside of school

• That happiness is a choice, so choose it

• To be happy with themselves - their gifts and talents,as well as limitations

• To work towards self- improvement but not atanother’s expense

• To be kind to themselves, and to others

• That no matter what they pursue it is important to dotheir best (whether at home, school, work or in thecommunity)

• To laugh as often as is possible

• To care for others, and to look out for others, and ifthey see something unjust then do something aboutit

• To do good deeds for others – it will make them feelgood too.

• To be grateful for what they have (envy createsdiscontent)

• To greet the new day with a smile and be glad to bealive to enjoy it

experiences and laughs. Next year I will be looking for morevolunteers to help with breakfast so if you don’t mind an earlystart let me know if you are interested in being on the rosterin term 1. All that is required is a working with young peopleBluecard. A special thanks to the Merino Bakery for donatingbread toward the Breakies.

At this time of year things start hotting up, with extra eventssuch as Awards Night (which was fantastic!), assessments thathave to be handed in, exams to sit and for year 12s, theessential formal. It is easy in the busyness to lose sight of whatis really important. Often when our eyes are fully focussed ongoing forward the view of the past fades. I believe we have to becareful not to let this happen because what we have right nowand what will become is grounded in what has come before.Jeremiah, a wise prophet of old, once said “Stand by the roadsand look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way isand walk in it and find rest for your souls.”

Progress and growth is good but it is best when it buildson what has come before. As the year 12s move into theworld I encourage them to remember that they take with themtheir years of schooling. The things that have set them upfor success in the adult world. They have learnt to follow adaily routine, to be punctual, to listen to instructions, to workindependently and develop self-discipline, all pivotal skills forthe workplace. They have learnt with the guidance of schoolstaff to negotiate friendships, learning how to managingemotions and conflicts. Also important for the workplace andlife in general. All this upskilling is underpinned by the nurtureof parents, who are necessary players in their young person’sjourney from childhood to adulthood.

So as we enter this busy time of year I encourage everyone totake a moment to look back and find the ‘ancient paths’ thathave developed the floorplan of your life, your values, morals, ethics, and beliefs and contemplate the ways these have been‘good’ and given you ‘rest for your souls’.

From me to you…

Operation Christmas ChildStudents and staff from LSHS have made a great effort indonating 28 gift boxes to Operation Christmas Child. OperationChristmas Child is a program of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christiancharity organisation whose purpose is to relieve the suffering ofpeople around the world.

Due to time constraints LSHS only had one week to distributeboxes, fill them and return them to school so that they couldbe delivered to The Reach Christian Church where they wouldbe sorted and then freighted by rail to Brisbane. The student’sresponse was remarkable and 28 very poor childrensomewhere in the world will now receive a gift for Christmas. The boxes contain clothing, stationary, a cuddly toy, personalhygiene items and other things that some children would likelynever have.

This is a very hands-on way to make a difference in a child’slife. Operation Christmas Child will be added to the school’scalendar for 2018 and into the future. With this effort LSHS hasdemonstrated that even in tough times we’re still able to thinkof others.

Dear Miss Pix,

You have been a great teacher for the time we have hadyou. We appreciate all your hard work to teach us Maths andGeography. Student’s Work

Stay Strong - Amy Dicinoski

If I had known what nightmare I was bound to face, I wouldhave eaten more, laughed more, played more and taken moretime to cherish every moment in our small family home.

It was 1969, in my small home village called Nui Dhat, in SouthVietnam. My mother and father worked endlessly in our ricefarm to provide for myself and my younger brother Thomas. His traditional name was, Tui Ma Choi. We lived in the VietKong region within the firing zone of North Vietnam and theU.S Navy recruits. It was an era of fear and tragedy. Theincreased hostilities between the U.S military and armed VietKong recruits began to encroach upon small villages destroyingand decimating our precious region. Our land was bombed andburnt to the ground by mortar-shells with a deafening frequencyof battle. Our only comfort was the love our family shared in oursmall home….

A World War 2 Story – Lee Cox

Twas early winter, 1939 and World War 2 had just begun;although we lived in a small village, the Germans invaded ourhomes. It was not only a strategic invasion but a smart oneas they created military compounds in our village; they alsosought children as young as fourteen to enlist as soldiers forthe Germans. Our family had only lived here since summer andthe village got more interesting as everyday passed. Merchantswould travel for miles with their pack mule just to set up asmall shop to sell the few possessions they owned; however, asthe Germans began to invade, curfews became common placewhich scared all the small business owners and merchants intown. They closed, one by one, but gun shops received moremoney than ever before. Prior to the war my family lived in quitea large village. The small groups of Germans that occupied thecountryside trade routes began to spread to main trade routesas Hitler began his ascension causing trade among nations tostop. As supplies began to dwindle we moved out and just intime as the Germans pushed into our town; killing the few thatremained, just days later. We were once a loving, humorousand giving family, but now we were both victims of war andprisoners.

At six-am one morning a loud and angry German Commanderknocked on our door, which took me by surprise. I jolted in myseat and placed my cup of tea on the table, but as I did so heslowly creaked the door open.

“Do you mind?” he asked in a loud, obnoxious tone….

The Journey to Australia – Rochelle Ballard

As an only child I was deeply loved by my mother and father.Although we were poor, no one could afford the love we sharedbetween each other. We lived in Saigon; a small town withinthe farming region of Vietnam. I grew extremely close with myyounger cousin Tilach; as both our families shared a small, cramped home. Soon enough, our lives became a never endingnightmare – what was once a peaceful village, soon becameunrecognisable as the sound of rapid gun fire was irrevocablyetched in my memory.

It was an ordinary day that instantly changed my life forever.

We were in the rice fields helping father harvest our supper. Itwas the 12th of August, 1969 when we heard the sudden firingof a gun. The sound vibrated through the ground. We froze interror. The deafening sound of several guns firing were heard. My father, Tilach and I frantically ran for our lives through thethick, soggy fields, clenching the sickle blades in our hands.Petrified, we sprinted as if we were about to take our lastbreath. I could see my mother screaming in the distance,“Hurry, hurry!” The ground began to shake uncontrollably as theintense power of the fighter jets flew above our heads. OnceI had reached my mother’s beloved arms, we quickly raced

inside and she grabbed the only suitcase we had. Dust coveredthe floor and rodents scattered underneath the furniture. Thescent of mouldy milk, from the perished suitcase, lingeredaround the small bedroom. Tears fell from my mother’sdisheartened face, as she rushed to grab all of our clothing andfit them into the suitcase. As I made my way over to the nowbroken window, my eyes started to fill with tears of terror. Iwas anxious and frightened as my whole world had suddenlychanged.
