This was back when bales were bucked by hand and corn had to be shelled after drying in the crib all winter. These events were very demanding physically. After bucking several hundred bails and loading them into the barn one was spent by the end of the day. The same was true for emptying the corn crib; when the crib got so low, the ear corn had to be shoveled into the thresher. Corn cribs are a thing of the past and most baling is done today by a machine that wraps them in 2,000 lbs bales that only hy- draulic lifts can handle. But the phrase still applies to life anytime we are faced with a physical, emotional, mental or any other kind of challenge. In that moment we show what we are made of. In 1994 Longview Chapel showed what it was made of by keeping the Chapel doors open when circumstances threatened such a reality. In order to enhance our ministry here at the Chapel more space was needed so we again showed what we were made of. In 2000 we added an addition that almost doubled the amount of space we had to do ministry. And over the past 13 years we have faithfully underwritten the $700,000 mortgage needed to make the project a reality. In the nearly nine years I have had the privilege of serving Longview Chapel we have done very well. We have grown in many ways; numbers, ministry and budget. In the past our numerical growth has helped us weather any financial storms but we have reached a point where our Sanctuary limitations no longer allow for such growth, and the slowly deteriorating economy is putting even more burden on our congregation. This has caused us to fall short in our budget needs for 2014. As I write this article Ministry Groups are redoing budget requests in hopes of getting our budget in line with our projected revenues. This is not an easy time for any of us, especially the leadership, who bear the responsibility of living within our means; we do not operate like our leadership in Washington, D.C. We will prayerfully move ahead as best we can but 2014 will be one of those years, like 2008, when we will demonstrate what we are made of. So many times we at Longview have stepped up to the plate and have been amazed and proud of what we accom- plished together. Since Thanksgiving we have collected close to $4,000 worth of food, 314 pounds of pennies worth $560 and 118 gloves, scarves, hats and socks all of which were given to Lee’s Summit Social Services to help the needy in our area. Pastor’s Perspective

“Let’s see what you’re made of !”

Growing up I often heard the phrase “Let’s see what you’re made of!” The phrase was thrown around a lot on the farm when baling and shelling

time came around. This was back when bales were bucked by hand and corn had to be shelled after drying in the crib all winter. These events were very demanding physically. Orientation Meeting—January 19th

2014 Church Planning Session—February 1st

January marks the beginning of a new calendar year and the beginning of a new program year. Two important meetings are scheduled to get our New Year off and running.

First, on Sunday, January 19th, Ministry Group Chairpersons will meet for Orientation. This meeting is very important to help new leadership know what procedures they need to follow and for returning leadership to review these procedures which often change over time. It is also a time to focus on our role as Ministry leaders. The meeting will be held in Long Hall from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Infor-mation from the Volunteer Sheets is being organized and will be available for Chairperson’s use.

Second, on Saturday, February 1st, Ministry Group Leaders, Committee Leaders, Church Leader-

ship and Staff will meet for our 2014 Planning Session where we will go over the whole 2014 calendar.

In preparation for this meeting each Ministry Group, Fellowship Group and Special Committee needs to

have as many events dates as possible determined in order to get those dates secured on the calendar. We

will meet in Long Hall at 10:00 a.m. and go till 3:00 p.m. at the latest. Lunch will be provided.

you provided. A special thanks to Charlotte Yates, Betty Harden and Anna Blackman for coming

early. We appreciate all your efforts to show our support to the LaRue family. Delilah & Bill Brown

• I want to thank each and every one of you for the constant love and devotion. The cards that Steve received during his illness are too numerous to even count. Those of you who came by to see him, brought communion, or just called to say “Hi” I cannot express how much each moment you spent with us meant. Steven’s memorial service was so warm and loving. To all the people in the Member-ship Ministries and the ones who brought the delicious food for the luncheon, thank you. I am over-whelmed with the cards I have received since Steve’s passing. You never know how many lives have touched yours until this sad time in your life and the true meaning of “You know we are Christians by our love” comes out. Bless each one of you. From the Music Director by Beth Fleer, Choir Director

Happy New Year!

How excited I am to begin a new year with the Choir and begin organizing music for the coming church year. One thing that is fun and challenging about my job as Music Director is the thrill of selecting old and new songs that will bring a musical message to the members of our church. As much as we enjoy the challenge of new music, it is also a comfort to sing the old, traditional hymns. Look for both kinds of music during the year.

Even though we are looking forward to the new year I must say something about the past. In December, how proud I was with the Choir singing the Cantata, “How Great Our Joy”. I thought we were well balanced on our harmony parts and have moved up a notch on musicality. A special thank you to Andrea Andrews for meeting the challenge of playing a difficult piano part. Also to Rick and Sarah Cottrell for providing the excellent narration. And, last but not least to the members of the Cantata choir for donating their time to rehearse in order to do their best singing. I hope the Cantata not only brought a message to our congregation but also brought a sense of accomplishment and joy to the participants. Thank you to the soloists and all who gave of themselves to present, “How Great Our Joy.”

Speaking of joy, a thank you to the nineteen children who participated in the program. “The Year Before Christmas.” Many of the congregation were surprised to hear and see the talent of the children in our church. Thanks to Julie Froneberger for her help with the Christmas musical as I couldn’t do this without her assistance. I also appreciate the many parents who helped with costumes, providing pizza and Kool-Aid and the men who put our stable together.

I would also like to thank the congregation for the their appreciative comments and well wishes concerning the special music provided during December. You were very generous in showing your appreciation to the children, the choir and to me. Thank you.

Choir rehearsals will resume Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 7:00 pm. You are invited to come and sing with us.

Make a New Year’s challenge to try something new! Join the Choir! ! ! !

Happy Birthday, Jesus! That was the name of our Christmas Program this year. We had a wonderful skit done by the PreK class retelling the birth of Jesus. All the kids did great singing all of their songs. It was a fun night!

A special thank you to Alex and Jackie for helping with the punch and treats. Serving over 150 people takes a lot of talent! Also a big thank you to Santa for making a stop during his busy time of year. The kids were so excited that he came. Thank you Rhonda for helping out as well! This is one of my favorites times that families get to come to the chapel. We are very blessed!

JANUARY SUNDAY SCHOOL, “GEMS OF THE KINGDOM!”

Jesus asked, "What is the Kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to?" Hmmm, good question. As Christians, we are part of the Kingdom of God. So, where are our crowns? Where are our precious gems? Children do some digging in the Bible and discover that parables are like precious gems - they tell us how we can be a part of the Kingdom of God. Jesus' parables tell how to have a new relationship with God and others. Kids explore parables depicting God's values, God's love, and God's Kingdom. The children will uncover the

following parables: The Parable of the Two Sons, The House Built on a Rock, The Rich Fool, and The Workers in the Vineyard.

Thank you to our teachers for January: Shirley Wolfskill, Adina East, Mary Aldridge, Caitlyn Hetzel and Alex Rosell.

IT’S AN OLD FASHIONED GAME NIGHT~ Back by popular demand (because we heard so many positive comments from last time) - It’s Old Fashioned Game Night. You remember those classic parlor games you loved as a child? Well, it's time once again to dust off those checker boards, dig out the dominoes, and join us for Old-Fashioned Game Night at the Chapel! Everyone is welcome on January 24 starting at 6pm for a fun-filled evening of card games, pick-up sticks, marbles, and more. We'll have "experts" on hand to provide instruction so don't worry if you are rusty or have never played! Bring a snack to share and a game if you like... or play one of ours. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided. Let's all un-plug for an evening and spend some quality time together!

Thank You December Teachers! Our Teachers are amazing! Thanks so much to Becky Ruf and Julie Froneberger for teaching last month. The kids had a great time learning about the symbols of Christmas! .

Save the DATE! Vacation Bible School is June 9 through June 13 from 6:30—8:30pm. It’s a great week learning God’s stories, and reaching out to the kids in our community. If you are interested in helping with VBS this year, please talk with Anne Graham, Kami Thomas, or Rhonda.
