market, we have to face competition. Competition is simply the product of DSS. I welcome competition because it drives us to work harder. I welcome competition because it will provide more opportunities for our kids.

Most important of all, if more schools in Hong Kong admit children of other ethnicities, don’t just treat these children a buffer or a life saving buoy. It’s good to have competitors and it means, in some aspects, someone can provide better education quality than Delia Broadway. It means it is the children who will benefit from the competition.

Look at our strength

To all students facing public examination, we also have to know our position before we make our next step. Our kids in Delia Broadway are much stronger in their language proficiency. We find the proof easily from EMB’s data and comparison. Value-added score of 9 for three consecutive years can be compared with any prestigious school in Hong Kong. Our passing average in HKCEE is 97.3% in English syllabus B and 81.6% in syllabus A; 86.9% in French; and 71.9% in Chinese. Our outstanding language proficiency is the outcome of our school’s distinctive language learning environment especially in English. According to studies, students’ language proficiency is a determinative factor of academic achievement. The language atmosphere of Delia Broadway has nourished us the foundation in acquiring knowledge in other areas. It’s your role as a student in Broadway to work hard so that more opportunity in academic advancement can be sought. Kids! Know your strengths and extend them as much as you can.

Competition drives us work harder. Most important of all, it’s the empathy to our children which makes our works meaningful. If others can share our empathy to our children, why should we unwelcome them. I have confidence in all S5 students who have gone through these years with us in Broadway. The statistical data and value-added measurement have provided solid evidence. To most of you, language proficiency is your strength. Can you extend them to the full?

I am glad to know that more schools in Hong Kong consider admitting children of other ethnicities. A prevocational school in Kowloon Bay announced last summer that they were going to offer courses for people who don’t speak Chinese. More schools mean more options for our children. More options mean more drastic competition among schools.

I am not saying I like competition. Competition actually brings stress. An S.5 student told me her worries on public examination last week when I talked with her during lunch time, “All teachers are talking about HKCEE. We are tired of listening to this. We are under immense pressure of public examination.”

How to look at competition

We have to understand the environment before we make our move. Delia Broadway is under Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS). DSS schools receive subsidies from government as long as the schools can admit students. In other words, education in Hong Kong has become a “commodity” subject to the preference of parents for enrolment. DSS has put schools into market. In

Mr. KC Lau It has long been controversial whether we should have another curriculum of Chinese Language for non- Chinese speaking students. The EMB insists that there is only one curriculum for Chinese Language in which detailed description of different levels can help students of different ability, including non Chinese speaking ones. What they have to do is to adjust the curriculum to make it relevant for learning. People are dissatisfied with the EMB shifting the responsibility of making teaching materials to teachers of non Chinese speaking students. In the recent meeting of LegCo, EMB promised to arrange GCSE-Chinese for non Chinese students to recognize their qualification not only to show their proficiency in Chinese, but also as one of the language subjects for Advanced Level Examination. A senior official of EMB also promised to persuade the local universities to recognize the result for entrance. Dr. KK Chan of Curriculum Development also promised that EMB will provide full support to school concerning supplementary teaching materials. Despite the promises of EMB, people are still worried unless the EMB

Mr. WL Lee To help our students overcome the fear of learning mathematics, we believe an efficient way is to arouse their interests before they learn new things. So, our mathematics teachers have organized many pre-learning activities and edited an activity book for our S.1 students under the QEF this year. We do hope our students to learn mathematics with more fun.

QEF Project – Mathematics

Should there be clear policy of Chinese as a Second Language

1. can develop a whole set of textbooks and workbooks for Secondary 1 to 5 non-Chinese speaking students;

2. will provide teachers concerned with training;3. clarifies who will be qualified to sit the GCSE-Chinese, students holding visa of foreign

countries despite they were born in Hong Kong, or those immigrants in recent years;

4. ensures that the qualification of GCSE-Chinese is recognized by the local universities;

5. ensures that the qualification of GCSE-Chinese is recognized by Civil Service of the Government and major commercial firms, and

6. ensures the exam fees of GCSE-Chinese similar to other languages of HKCEE.

Otherwise, the EMB should1. provide supplementary guidelines to the

curriculum of Chinese Language, so that teacher can make adaptation according to the instructions of EMB;

2. provide relevant teaching materials to bridge the mainstream curriculum, so as to relieve the burden of teachers;

3. provide training courses for teachers concerned to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning, and

4. establish relevant assessment measures and standards,e.g. adjusting the passing grade of HKCEE or Secondary Diploma Examination results for non Chinese speaking candidates.

We know that the current curriculum of Chinese Language has been taken ten years to plan before implementation, and the publishers spent two years to edit the textbooks. It is impracticable to develop another curriculum of Chinese Language for the non Chinese students. The EMB should take a positive attitude on policy of Chinese language for the non Chinese speaking students, including formulation of curriculum, production of teaching materials, teacher training and relevant assessment.

Liberal Studies (LS) has been made a core subject in the New Senior Secondary (NSS) in 2009. In other words, the current S.1 students will be studying this new core subject when they are in S.4. The reason for this change in curriculum is to train up students’ higher order thinking skills such as analytical and critical thinking skills as the new generation badly needs these skills in the new era. In Liberal Studies (LS), students are expected to explore different issues across different subject areas self & personal growth, science & technology, society & culture, and they look into such issues in a critical manner so as to acquire and consolidate their skills in exploring issues. Factual recall is not emphasized in LS and this is a major difference between LS and other subjects.

To prepare for this big change, the School offers a brand-new subject, Basic Liberal Studies (BLS) to replace the Social Studies in the junior secondary.

One of the differences between LS and other subjects is that there are no textbook-like materials for both teachers and students. To prepare for the lessons, teachers have to search for different materials, be they printed or visual materials, which are to be used in lessons to assist students’ exploration of different issues. The BLS course materials are to help students to build a good foundation in having the basic subject knowledge in those areas and skills in exploration and enquiry of issues. Through preparing such course materials, subject teachers accumulated experience and knowledge.

The BLS course material is developed by teachers to meet our non-Chinese students’ needs. When we first began to prepare for BLS, there were no suitable course books found in the textbook market. The existing textbooks were

designed for local Chinese students. Besides, we want to introduce an element of multi-culture into the course material. Although

developing school-based course material is a heavy burden, we decided to develop our own school-based course material for BLS. We

successfully applied for the Quality Education Fund (QEF) to get extra financial support for

It has become more convenient for our students to go to the School Library through a newly constructed staircase inside the school building. Together with computer searching system, the introduction of new call number can help students find their books easily. We hope the new facilities can help fostering students’ reading habit, so as to achieve the objective of reading to learn.

(Ares)

11 Hello everyone, my name’s Chloe Wu. I’m the class teacher of S6A and teaching S4-5 Commerce, S6-7 Economics and S7 Business Studies. All my colleagues and students at Broadway are so nice and made me feel welcome. Thanks a lot!

I love sports so much, wany kind of sports I also can play, but my favorite activities is rugby, and i’m also a coach, if you all want to play the rugby you can find me anytime !! Nice to miss you all .

My Chinese name is called Sye Sui Kam. I speak and write Chinese, English and French. It is my first year to join the multi-cultural Delian United Nations (DUN)/ Les Nations Unies Deliennes multi-culturelles (NUD)/ 多元文化的地利亞聯合國. I teach French to F1, F2 and F4 students and social studies to F3 students. I love meeting peoples of diverse nationalities and different skin colors in the whole world. In particular, I enjoy teaching students at Delia School (Broadway) because I like children of various cultural backgrounds and nationalities. I can also contribute the best of my multi-cultural knowledge to the school and share my multi-national traveling experience with my students. I feel proud of serving in the Delian United Nations.

Salut! C’est Mademoiselle Wan. (Hi! It’s Miss Wan) Most of the student called me Mademoiselle Wan because I am teaching S1 and S2 French but I am also teaching S7 Business Studies (English Stream). This is my first year teaching in DMS (Broadway) and everything is new to me, but I will try my best. I am interested in learning new things, especially learning new languages. I like travelling a lot as well because I can meet a lot of interesting people and make friends who are from different cultural backgrounds. I like listening to music, especially acoustic and pop. I am glad that I can start my career at DMS (Broadway). Eventually, may peace, wisdom, health and the power of love shine upon all of you. Light and positivity will prevail. Be blessed forever. Merci beaucoup!

Hi, I am Mr Tsang. I am the class teacher of 1D. I teach S.3 CSL and also help Maths teachers to prepare materials. I have been here for a few months only. There are really lots of challenges and fun. Students here are from different cultures and most of them are very active. Sometimes it is hard for me to deal with naughty students. I hope by gaining more experiences I could teach more effectively.During free time, I enjoy playing squash, cycling and running. I also enjoy reading very much. Hope that I could enrich my knowledge through reading and give it to my students.

Halo. Do you know who I am? I’m Ms. Ng. I am currently teaching S. 1 to S. 3 C.S.L. plus S.1 Life Education this year. Also I am one of the class teachers of S.1A (Aspiration). I am fond of cooking, swimming, shopping, playing PSP games, surfing nets, reading, watching drama series, cartoons and movies. The most difficult task in my teaching is educating these non-Chinese students about Chinese particularly in writing Chinese characters. I certainly know the difficulty for non-Chinese people to memorize and manage the writing of Chinese characters but I strongly believe that they have

the ability to do it well. By the way, I do hope my students will manage the use of Chinese in a diverse manner, hence they can communicate and get along with others easily. To me, colleagues in the Broadway family are nice plus helpful indeed. I would like to take this golden chance to express my gratitude for the help my colleagues have been offering.

We got married!! We are Mr Lo and Miss Sze. We got married at the Cotton Tree Drive Marriage Registry on nd July, 2006. What’s more, our school Librarian, Steven Lo, also got married there 15 minutes earlier than us on that day! After the wedding ceremony, we took pictures with the guests in Hong Kong Park. To our surprise, over 50 Broadwayers came and shared that glorious moment with us. We are deeply touched by all the guests who attended our wedding and we are so

grateful to receive blessing from all of you!

My husband and I were married on August 11, 2006. Since many of our friends and most of our family live in Canada, we decided we would fly home for our marriage ceremony. Our wedding day was beautiful. The sun was shining and the sky was very blue. All of our close friends and family gathered together in a garden ceremony to witness our union. Both my husband and I felt very nervous to stand in front of all those people, but once the ceremony itself was over, we relaxed and had a great time celebrating with our guests. with our guests.

On July 9th, 2006 I got married to my fiancée, Eric MacMillan. Our wedding ceremony and reception were held at the Old Orchard Inn in Nova Scotia, Canada. Surrounded by family and friends, it was such a special day. It was beautiful—sunny without a cloud in the sky. The ceremony was lovely and the reception included a delicious meal and a dance afterwards. Thanks to everyone who wished us well on that wonderful day!

Hello everybody, my name is Barry Ki and this is my first year teaching at Delia Memorial School (Broadway). The cheer, warmth and support I receive from students, and teachers make me feel I have been a part of this all my life. This is my first year teaching in a secondary school and I find it quite challenging. However, I really enjoy the teaching process because I’m learning and delivering at the same time. Everyday I learn new things from students and teachers. I don’t really look at myself as a teacher, but I am more of a close brother and a role model leading my little ones to do the right thing in life. I am teaching CSL, Liberal Studies, WPBC, and I am also coaching the school basketball team. Just last month our C grade boys basketball team won 54 to 13. I believe every one of our students at Delia Broadway have their own talents and specialties. I am truly amazed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and students who have made me feel welcome, it brings me great joy to teach and learn together with every one of you.

Madonna Murphy
