This year the only people getting wet were those who opted to go on the water rides! Within my own group I had a number of Beavers who had not been to a theme park before and it was great to see them venturing onto their first rides with a mixture of fear and excitement. Happily, they all enjoyed the experience - even though for some, one go on each ride was enough. As well as the benefit of the lovely weather, we were also fortunate in that there were hardly any queues at the rides and I am pleased to report that we managed to get on the largest number of rides eversometimes even going round on the same ride several times in a row. A particular highlight for me, was going on the Edge, possibly my favourite ride in the park. However, as it is high, fast and spins around there is a height restriction meaning some of the Beavers were too small to go on it. Those beavers still found a way to join in the funthey ran alongside the ride, tracking it as it moved from left to right and back again, shouting and waving at those of us on the rideand of course, we waved back! One of the beavers on this ride told me it was the scariest thing ever and that he didn’t like itbefore he then asked me if we could go on it again. Bright and early on the morning of Saturday, 14th October over 130 Beavers, Young Leaders and Leaders (along with a few willing parents) from 10 Colonies in Basingstoke East went on the annual County Beaver visit to Paultons Park.

We usually undertake this visit a bit later in the year as we have always been to see Father Christmas in the past, however this year was different…and while we didn’t get to see Father Christmas, we got to see the fantastic pumpkin display and benefitted from the wonderful weather which was warm and dry (for a change).

As well as the benefit of the lovely weather, we were also fortunate in that there

were hardly any queues at the rides and I am pleased to report that we managed to get on the largest number of rides ever…sometimes even going round on the same ride several times in a row.

A particular highlight for me, was going on the Edge, possibly my favourite ride in the park. However, as it is high, fast and spins around there is a height restriction meaning some of the Beavers were too small to go on it. Those beavers still found a way to join in the fun…they ran alongside the ride, tracking it as it moved from left to right and back again, shouting and waving at those of us on the ride…and of course, we waved back! One of the beavers on this ride told me it was the scariest thing ever and that he didn’t like it…before he then asked me if we could go on it again.

Having spoken to many of my fellow leaders on the day, I think the general opinion was that this was the best trip to Paultons Park ever and the only complaint was that we had to go home too early as there was still so much more we could have seen and done.

Thank you to all who participated and in particular to Magda, ADC Beavers for organising our attendance. I

can’t wait until next year…

On the weekend of 29th September – 1st October 2017, Basingstoke Air Scout Group held their first Group Camp for many years at the 89th Reading Scout Groups HQ and Activity Centre. We were joined by Scouts from Old Basing and 24th Basingstoke (Basingstoke West District).

The advanced party of Leaders arrived at about 14:00 to start putting up tents for the Cubs and Beavers as well as starting to organise some of the activity bases for the weekend. The arrival time of the Cubs and Scouts staggered between 19:15 and 20:15, the Beavers then arrived on Saturday morning full of energy and excitement.

Everyone was now split into Groups for the weekend’s activities, that were all based round challenges from the Crystal Maze Television Programme and included an observation walk in nearby woods where they had to count up the number of “images” of animals they saw on route, they had the extra challenge of being shown a clock with a time on it and then periodically shown a number of minutes they either had to add or subtract, so that at the end of the walk they had to report back what the final time was, other activities included Pizza making, so they all made Pizzas for Saturdays Dinner, and making a small campfire blanket, sewing around the edges using a “Blanket Stitch”.

Saturday afternoon was spent on the Adventure course that comprised of a Zip Wire and a number of interconnected rope and wire bridges. Saturday evening saw they rain settle in for a

period, but this did not dampen the spirts and the Campfire went ahead as normal at camp.

On the Sunday morning while the Cubs and Beavers tried their hand at the peg wall and crate stacking, the Scouts had the opportunity to be taken down, shown round and told about the history of an old chalk mine that sits beneath the campsite and local area. The only

way in to the mine is to be lowered down a 21 meter shaft. After the tour the only way out is to climb back up the shaft using a ladder. I won’t give too much away about what is down there in case anyone wants to go there themselves as I don’t want to spoil the surprise, all I will say it is very interesting.

After lunch of burgers and fajitas it was time to pack up, and for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to head home after a successful if not slightly wet at times Group Camp

Scheduled Appointments’ Advisory Panel Meetings

6th November and 4th December in Base 2000 Carpenters Down RG24 9AE..

The District Review Panel Will Meet On

Wednesday 29th November (not 21st as previously advised) at 6 Holly Drive, Old Basing RG24 7LE. GSLS with leader requiring review have been notified and Forms AR issued (due for return by 25th November please)

Beryl Mullender District Appointments Secretary [email protected]

Apart from preparing for the Christmas festivities November is the time of year when District set the Budget and Levy for next year and will be discussed and confirmed at this month’s meeting.

National and County have already advised at the October County Executive Meeting that the levy is going up due to the increase in costs for the safeguarding team at Gilwell and the national and local legacy funding for the County development officer has come to an end and the county now have to self-fund this employed role.

District will be trying to keep the capitation to a minimum as we appreciate in this difficult financial climate it is never easy for parents and Groups trying to raise funds.

There are District funds available for assisting some activities and International Jamboree participation etc. to help with the costs and several other sources of funding from Trusts and local organisations that can be contacted so if your Group needs any help then please let us know.

Having attended the funeral of Allen Jones last month I was saddened to be informed that his younger son Gareth had recently died after being ill for some time.

Beryl Mullender, Hon Manager Basingstoke Scouting Supplies

I was really pleased that so many of you attended the recent District Leaders Meeting. The sectional time has provided some really exciting ideas for next year’s District events. The energy and enthusiasm to try new things and to push ourselves was inspiring and means that our young people will have a really exciting District programme for 2018.

I would like to remind all leaders that there is always the opportunity to gain additional leaderships skills in areas like climbing, hill walking, archery and water activities. As a District we have funding available to help with this. The more skills we have the more that we can do to provide fun and adventure. In 2018 we will be looking to support leaders who wish to undertake their Nights Away permits, so that more of us have the skills and expertise to provide those really exciting events our young people enjoy so much.

Working together we can achieve so much more, and I have been impressed by several Groups sharing skills and leadership to offer great Scouting. This has been particularly successful with the Scouts from 8th Basingstoke and Sea Scouts working together over the past couple of terms. This has seen benefits for each and showcases what we can do. As we come towards the end of the year the work we have been undertaking towards the 2018 vision for Scouting should now be embedded in what we do. Making sure we have a strong youth shaped programmes incorporating the ideas and views of our young people is central to this.

We need to also ensure that we enable more young people to experience Scouting and to do this we will need to recruit more adults. As leaders we know the parents of our young people best, and that is where the biggest percentage of new leaders come from. Let’s see what we can do over the coming months to bring more adults in to share the fun that we all have, and pass on to our young people.
