Even creative activity calls for an unfocused andundifferentiated subconscious mode of vision, which is fused with inte-grating tactile experience. The object of a creative act is not only en-folded by the eye and the touch, it has to be introjected, identified withone's own body and existential experience. In deep thought, focused

vision is blocked; thoughts travel with an absent-minded gaze.

    Concept & Sketches

The project asks for an investigationand response to enable denedcommunities within Kings Cross areato connect, contribute and interactwith a structure sited on the Regents

canal.Islington boroughs position has en-abled it to become second with thehighest number of businesses in Lon-don after Westminster and fth inthe UK. With the regeneration mas-terplan for the Kings Cross area, a

whole new district of creativity is be-ing born.Battle Bridge basin is situated in thevivid and fast growing area of KingsCross and St. Pancras stations. It is asecluded place around the bustlingtransport hubs with a mixed-use

    space of both business residentialbuildings.

    The Pfoject Concept brief

The Regents Canal function, as afast infrastructure to enable business

and building projects, linking theEast to the West, has long been su-perseded by train, roads and bridg-es. The canal barges are no longerneeded. Thus the boating lifestylehas declined for the last couple ofdecades.

It is only within the last 2 decadesthat the canal has been thoughtof as desirable place to live, reside

or visit. The regeneration project ofKings Cross has seen the RegentsCanal transform its derelict and

rundown properties, to an area ofdiverse communities enjoying thewealth of opportunities it offers, ei-ther living on the water or land. At-tracted by the nomadic lifestyleof the boating community is onthe increase, regardless the incon-

venience of not having the usualcommodities of a house on ground. However boaters and local resi-dents around Regents Canal stillshare two different worlds in a com-mon urban area. The project willaim to provide a space where local

communities can share a commonspace that is pertinent to all.

    The introduction of digital technolo-

gies has seen a sharp decline in theuse of local libraries. This shift hasseen councils closing much lovedspaces, where the community notonly borrowed books, but met, in-teracted and communicated witha diverse body of the community.

The proposal is to create a mobileoating folding structure, which will

host a library and meeting spacefor the communities around the ca-nal, for both, boaters and local res-

    Coordinated Community

    idents.

The aim is to encourage the com-munity to share a common space, where they can not only nd inter-

esting books, but also socialize andattend literary/cultural discussions,as well as being able to share a dif-ferent point of view over the canal. The concept is a hub for social lit-eration and inspiration, as well asa spot for meeting two different

worlds that share a common space.

The space will function not only as alibrary but also as an event space forthe purposes of the community.

    Final model investigation

A counter part to the multi-functional

    interior of the Floating

Library is the kinetic faade. Like the

overall architecture of the structure it

    evokes sensuous experiences through

    analogue means. During daytime the

lamellas can be used to control light

conditions in the library or left to be ut-

    tered by the wind.

After sunset the analogue visual effect

of the moving particles is intensied by

LEDs. The bionic principle of the kinetic

media faade supports the idea of a

    consistent effect.

    Form, material, movement and light

    are seamlessly interrelated. Wider

opening angle reects on the bigger

area affected by light. The bionic ap-proach also underlines the ecological

agenda of the Floating Library. As a

    moving, emotional experience the ki-

    netic faade combines the sensation

    with the sensational.

    Ephemeral Interior

The interior of the library ismade of modular furnitureexible to be moved andre-organised differently de-

pending on the use of thespace.

    Folding paper partitions di-

vide the space onto differentrooms for reading, multimedia

and observation deck. Thereis also a stair that folds into thewall, when not in use, to go tothe rooftop garden on the up-per deck.

The bookshelfs are madeof easy to assemble anddisasemble rectangular mod-ules to ease the moving of thebooks from theBritish library to the oatingone and back.

    The Floating Library is a structure of4 x 18m (72 m2), which works with-

in the connes of the canals locksand bridges.

The journey to the structure will aimto attract the viewer by revealingnew possibilities from day to night, through kinetic mechanisms. Once

at the threshold of the structure thevista provided through emotionallycharges drawing the individual into the space. As they walk throughthey look up through a skylight thatadds a new perspective.

The space will be divided into 3

main spaces, Connect, Containand Commune. The rst space al-lows for creative connections with

books, technologies and commu-nity, while the Contain area, is forquiet contemplation, research andindividual activities. The nal areaCommune is an observation deckfor a wild life platform that is con-nected to the structure. The Space

supported by the British Library willcontain a set of modular units thatwill refresh, restock and change of-fer wide ranging themes, depend-ing on use or events. Targeting ed-

ucational events can meander itsway up and down the canal, en-

couraging the community rise upand engage.
