ORGANIC | FAIRLY TRADED | SMALL FARMER GROWN SINCE 1986

ON THE COVER: Suzeline Michel-Paul and her daughter Abigail shop at the Fair Trade Sale at River Church in Quincy, Massachusetts.

MICHAEL WILLIAMSMichael Williams’ church began selling Equal Exchange products in 2010, but it was in the last year that Michael revived the program, earning top customer status! Michael uses custom-built display racks, offers a coffee grinding station, and hosts coffee tastings whenever he begins offering a new coffee to spark excitement and conversation.

“When I re-started the program a year ago, I was thoroughly excited at the response it got. I have been astonished at the growth. It still amazes me at times what a cause and a need for support can do to inspire people, a congregation, a community. Having a GREAT product doesn’t hurt either!”

small farmers worldwide. Whether you host a Sunday coffee hour, weekly table sale,

or annual event, your local action makes a difference for people around the globe.

JENNI HEIMACHEvery Sunday after services, Jenni Heimach sells coffee, chocolate and tea from a custom-built cart made by a congregation member. With the profits, she purchases coffee to serve at coffee hour! After joining an Equal Exchange trip to Nicaragua, Jenni feels an even deeper connection to the alternative trade mission.

“At first is was about an easy way to bring good coffee and chocolate to the church while helping others. Now that I know more about small farmers and their communities, I am passionate about helping them because I have learned how it makes a huge impact. Every sip of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate reminds me that someone prepared this cup for me. Hopefully, by drinking a cup I can help a child, a family, and a community.”

IN COLOMBIA:Luz Bueno, her husband Alirio Tapasco, and their son Hugo are keepers of seeds and traditional medicine in the San Lorenzo Indigenous Reserve. In addition to protecting their ancestral seeds, they are also organic coffee farmers and members of ASPROCAFE Ingruma.

u

IN MEXICO:The coffee farms in Chiapas, Mexico, have been hugely impacted by coffee leaf rust. Here, Filiberto Mazariegos Roblero, the export manager of our partner co-op CIRSA, explains their plan to set up a demonstration plot to research ways to increase coffee production.

u

Savor the Aroma

Fill ceramic mugs halfway and pass them out to the

group. Encourage everyone to place their hands around their mug and breathe in all that the

coffee has to offer. What do you smell? Does it remind you of

something? A different food or drink?

Take a SipAs the coffee begins to

cool, continue to smell it and take a sip. What does the coffee taste like now? What are some of the flavors you are enjoying?

Explore these characteristics using the Specialty Coffee Association

coffee taster’s flavor wheel to help guide your

conversation.

Reveal the Flavors

After you taste the coffee for a few minutes and guide

the conversation, reveal the flavor notes we find in the coffee, which

are listed on the online product page. How was your tasting

experience similar or different?

Gather a group and follow these steps to hold your own coffee

tasting event and immerse yourself in a sensory coffee experience!

The Congo Coffee Project is a partnership between Equal Exchange and the Panzi Foundation, supporting women who are survivors of epidemic sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Panzi Hospital, a groundbreaking holistic healing center founded by Dr. Denis Mukwege, has treated tens of thousands of women in need. Beyond the medical, their work includes essential counseling, skill training, literacy education and daycare.

The Project was created as a way to bring Congolese coffee to market in the United States while raising awareness about the plague of violence in the DRC, and for every bag of Organic Congo Coffee sold, we donate $1 to Panzi Hospital. Since its inception in 2011, the Congo Coffee Project has raised more than $60,000!

The Maison Dorcas aftercare center at Panzi Hospital provides women with a place to heal while receiving counseling and vocational skills training. Over the last five years, funds from the Project have been dedicated to

these training programs. Learning the art of basket weaving is part of the healing process and provides women with income and a set of skills that can be used when they leave the aftercare program. Equal Exchange is proud to be the first buyer of the beautiful Panzi Bags and bring them to market!

Equal Exchange is proud to partner with Panzi Foundation USA, purchase coffee from our partners at SOPACDI co-operative and work with like-minded organizations and activists to bring the conversation to life. We believe that through action and financial support, we can help contribute to the Congolese economy and assist the local people by telling their stories and supporting the power to heal.

For every bag of Congo Coffee sold,

Equal Exchange contributes $1 to

Panzi Hospital and Foundations.

These funds have been directed to the Maison

Dorcas aftercare center, which supports vocational

training for survivors of sexual violence.

a

At Maison Dorcas, women learn to make the colorful Panzi Bags and then sell them to Equal Exchange,

which helps foster financial independence and stability.

“I started coming to Maison Dorcas in June 2015. I came to learn some handcraft skills such as embroidery, bag making and tailoring. I have

now mastered some of these skills and use them to survive and support my family. Maison Dorcas gave me life through training. When I make EE bags, I have enough food at home and pay school fees for some of my children. It is a good business!”

Jacqueline’s Story

C O F F E E P R O J E C T

“Beyond investing in individual women, Equal Exchange is also investing in creating

a sustainable, entrepreneurial program at the hospital, importing beautiful Panzi Bags

made by the women at Maison Dorcas for sale in the United States. Lives, livelihoods, and communities are rebuilding themselves.

It’s a remarkable partnership.”

“We don’t see ourselves as a supplier to Equal Exchange. We are allies.” BASILIO ALMONTE Head of CONACADO Technical Team

CONACADO was founded 30 years ago, at a time when only a few wealthy families dominated the cacao landscape in the Dominican Republic, leaving farmers with little voice. CONACADO aimed to change that by creating a farmer owned co-operative that valued transparency and quality. Today, with over 9,000 members, it is the largest exporter of organic cacao beans in the world!
