From Tintin to Audrey Hepburn

NON POTEVA partire meglio il Festival di Roma: “Tintin” di Spielberg è decisamente il film piùatteso di quest’ultima parte di stagione cinematografica. Piera Detassis ha smosso mare e montie alla fine ha portato a Roma alcune pellicole di ottima qualità come “The Lady” di Luc Besson incui Michelle Yeoh interpreta magistralmente Aung San Sun Kyi, la pacifista birmana da decenniattiva contro la dittatura nel suo paese e per la difesa dei diritti umani, costretta agli arrestidomiciliari quasi ininterrottamente dal 1989 al 2007 e separata a forza dal marito e dai figliresidenti in Inghilterra. E per gli amanti del vintage diventa imperdibile il restauro di “Colazioneda Tiffany”, un film che oltre ad aver posto Audrey Hepburn nell’Olimpo ha messo un punto fermonella moda femminile. E l’Italia si gioca invece le opere di Pupi Avati, Ivan Cotroneo e PippoMezzapesa.

THE ROME film Festival could have no better start: “Tintin” directed by Spielberg is certainly themost awaited movie in the late 2011 movie season. Piera Detassis has worked hard and finally broughtsome excellent films, like “The Lady” by Luc Besson where Michelle Yeoh masterfully plays Aung SanSun Kyi, the Burma pacifist who has been fighting against the dictatorship in her country and to defendhuman rights for decades, has been under house arrest almost uninterruptedly from 1989 till 2007, andwas forcedly separated from her husband and children, who live in England. And vintage lovers shouldnot miss the restored version of “Breakfast at Tiffany's”, a movie that launched Audrey Hepburn amongthe celebrities and set a milestone in ladies' fashion. And Italy plays its cards with movies directed byPupi Avati, Ivan Cotroneo and Pippo Mezzapesa.

IN ATTESA che quel mostro sacro di Steven Spielberg mettamano a “Gods and Kings”, praticamente la storia di Mosé, il cinemahollywoodiano ha riscoperto gli argomenti religiosi cometestimoniano le molto produzioni che hanno la fede comeargomento principale. Una svolta etica o semplicemente lasperanza di ripetere il successo commerciale dei “Diecicomandamenti” di Cecil DeMille che nell’ormai lontanissimo 1956fecero incassare ai produttori ben 80 milioni di dollari di allora, unafortuna. Certo, la religiosità è vista alla californiana: in “MachineGun Preacher” un missionario sconfigge i ribelli africani più con ilbazooka che con le preghiere, così come si declina la fede, come faRoberto Duvall in “Seven Days”, per aiutare un giocatore di golf incrisi a ritrovare se stesso.

WHILE waiting for Steven Spielberg to start “Gods and Kings”,practically the history of Moses, Hollywood has rediscovered religiousmovies, as proven by several productions that have faith as their mainsubject. An ethical turn or simply the hope to repeat the commercialsuccess of Cecil DeMille's “The Ten Commandments”, which cashed in asmany as 80,000,000 dollars in 1956, a true fortune. Sure, religiosity isapproached in California style: in “Machine Gun Preacher”, a missionarydefeats African rebels using more bazookas than prayers, and faith isinterpreted, as done by Robert Duvall in “Seven Days”, to help adepressed golf player to regain his balance.

Sherlock Holm, gioco d’ombre

“THE TREE of Life” è la storia di una famiglia del Midwest negli anni Cinquantaattraverso lo sguardo del figlio maggiore, Jack, nel suo viaggio personale dall’innocenzadell’infanzia alle disillusioni dell’età adulta in cui cerca di tirare le somme di un rapportoconflittuale con il padre (Brad Pitt). Jack - che da adulto è interpretato da Sean Penn - sisente come un’anima perduta nel mondo moderno che vaga nel tentativo di trovare dellerisposte alle origini e al significato della vita, tanto da mettere in discussione anche la suafede. Attraverso lo sguardo possente e visionario di Malick, il film mostra come sia la naturabrutale che la grazia spirituale siano alla base delle nostre vite come individui e comefamiglie. E rivela come esse pervadono tutta la nostra esistenza.

In addition toher Official Selection, she has givenvaluable added space to hercommission of experts and theirsections: Mario Sesti, programmer ofthe Extra sidebar, which is dedicated todocumentaries, research, and new filmlanguages and formats; GianlucaGiannelli, programmer of the Alice nellacittà section for young audiences; andGaia Morrione, curator of this year’sFocus on British cinema and culture.Inaugurated last year, the SpecialEvents section is also back, as is TheBusiness Street film market. Promotingindustry networking, and again helmedby Roberto Cicutto, it will take placewith input from leading organizationsof Italian and international cinema. Wehave certainly not forgotten tocommemorate particularly momentousoccasions of our history, such as 150thAnniversary of Italian Unification, adate that our beloved President of theRepublic has deeply inscribed into ourhearts. We pay homage to theanniversary with a photography exhibitat the Auditorium curated by AntonioMaraldi (of the Centro Cinema Città inCesena), entitled Viva l’Italia! Camerini’s Rotaie and The Cannibals byLiliana Cavani. In keeping with thistheme, there will also be a film series atthe Casa del Cinema organized byMarcello Veneziani, centered on Italianidentity.We will also celebrate MonicaVitti’s 80th birthday at the Auditorium,with a photography exhibit organized incollaboration with the CentroSperimentale di Cinematografia andCinecittà Luce.I would be remiss in not mentioning thespecial nature of this year’sinternational jury of the OfficialSelection, presided over by someonedear to me known throughout theworld: Maestro Ennio Morricone. He isjoined by another great étoile of Italianculture, Roberto Bolle. The foreign jurymembers will also lend their charismato ensure the Festival fully achieve itsgoals. Besides their awards and theprizes of the other competitionsections, once again our official prize,the Marc’Aurelio Audience Award, willbe voted upon by our fellow Romanswho, in growing numbers, closely followthe Festival that takes the name oftheir, of our, city.

Ed è una sfida che guardaprima di tutto al nostro plusvalore - ilpubblico appassionato di una (cine)cittàche ama e coltiva la settima arte - manon dimentica l’industria, quel Mercatoben rappresentato da The Business Streetguidata da Roberto Cicutto. La nostradiversità e peculiarità sta in questobinomio, ma anche nella capacità diattraversare territori più variegati evisionari: i documentari, i duetti e lelezioni di cinema di L’Altro cinema | Extra,la furia giovanile di Alice nella città, lacultura fusion di Focus, quest’annodedicato al cinema UK, le rarità diSpettacolo|Eventi speciali. “Tutto ilcinema per tutti” è lo slogan del nostropresidente Gian Luigi Rondi e rappresentala linea guida del progetto Festival diRoma, ma questa sesta edizione è anchela conferma di una vocazione,l’attenzione posta fin dall’inizio al lavorodell’attore, che quest’anno, purassegnando a Richard Gere il prestigiosoActing Award, è soprattutto lavorod’attrice. Il risultato lo giudicheretevoi, ma sottolineo che è frutto del lavorotestardo di una squadra ricca di passionee grandi professionalità, che resistenell’idea di un festival-festametropolitano. In primo luogola costruzione dell’evento ha insistitosu quella connotazione chedifferenzia il Festival romano damolte altre iniziative di egualeimportanza e prestigio: ricercare ilpiù possibile l’autofinanziamento.Ecco quindi progetti ad hoc versosponsor che investono nell’evento eche pur nella criticità del momentoeconomico assicurano la propriafidelizzazione al Festival. Uno su tuttiè il caso di Bnl – Bnp Gruppo Paribasmain partner della manifestazionepresente sin dal 2006. Ma ecco anchevere e proprie coproduzioni consoggetti pubblico-privati come ilCentro Sperimentale diCinematografia, Cinecittà-Luce, laFondazione MAXXI, Zètema, la Casadel Cinema, l’Istituzione delleBiblioteche di Roma, a cui si unisconocollaborazioni più mirate, tra cuiquella con l’Accademia Nazionale di

Santa Cecilia, Romaeuropa Festival,Azienda Speciale Palaexpo,Auditorium Conciliazione.Anche quest’anno si rileva lacorealizzazione di progettiistituzionali, come quello con ilDipartimento della Gioventù dellaPresidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri,che oltre al Premio Esordienti eall’attività di formazione per giovaniprofessionisti vede la realizzazione diuna Vetrina dei Giovani CineastiItaliani. Naturalmente rimanel’apporto insostituibile dei socifondatori (Comune di Roma, RegioneLazio, Provincia di Roma, Camera diCommercio di Roma, FondazioneMusica per Roma) che oltre adassicurare un sostegno finanziario(la parte pubblica dei ricavi a budgetè pari al 35%) partecipano allaprogettazione del sistema festival.Viene a confermarsi un modello diFestival pluralista, che si affida allasocietà civile e non solo alcontribuente, per presentareun’offerta di qualità e varietà: lesezioni storiche, gli eventi speciali, ilFocus dedicato al Regno Unito, ilprogetto sull’Identità Italiananell’anniversario per i 150 annidell’Unità d’Italia, l’attività delMercato del Film e il sostegno allecoproduzioni di giovani autori e poimostre, concerti, spettacoli secondouna formula, quella delle Risonanze,che non assorbe risorse ma utilizzala rete delle cooperazioni. Un Festivalimpegnato e solidale, attento anchealle innovazioni (wi-fi in ognilocation, potenziamento del digitale,una sezione sul web grazie allacollaborazione con Mymovies). UnFestival che vuole, nonostante ledifficoltà, crescere e che scommettetra le sue tante particolarità propriosul Mercato del Film, nel 2012concentrato presso il Museo MAXXI,mentre Via Veneto resterà il luogodell’accoglienza degli operatori. Laconvinzione del management delFestival, resta quella del lavoroindirizzato verso il futuro, anche intempi difficili, serrando i ranghi tratutti, per arrivare a posizionare

ancora di più il Festival tra i grandiavvenimenti collettivi e culturaliinternazionali.

THE SIXTH edition of theInternational Rome Film Festival comesat a very difficult time for the Country’seconomy, a situation that has seriousand tough repercussions on the worldof arts and culture as well. Yet despiteall this the Fondazione Cinema perRoma has tried to come to terms withthe complexity of such an unstablegeneral outlook and without sacrificingquality standards or denying that attimes of crises no window ofopportunity should be shunned, it hasall the same set itself some importantobjectives for the future. In the firstplace the event’s conception hasobviously steered a path that isnecessarily in tune with what is one ofits distinctive features which sets theRoman festival apart from many otherinitiatives of equal importance andprestige: the fact that it is alwaysstriving to be self-financing. This leadsto specific ad hoc projects designed forsponsors who despite the criticaleconomic climate are still prepared toinvest in the event and show theirloyalty to the Festival. And first amongthese is the BNL – BNP PARIBASGROUP, the event’s main partner whohas taken part ever since 2006. Butthis year there are also many co-productions with public-privateinstitutions such as the CentroSperimentale di Cinematografia,Cinecittà-Luce, the MAXXI Foundation,Zètema, the Casa del Cinema, theRome Library Institution to which oneshould add the more specificcollaborations which include theNational Academy of Santa Cecilia, theAzienda Speciale Palaexpo, theAuditorium Conciliazione.And this year a particular mentionsshould also go to the many institutionalprojects being co-produced, such as theone set up with the Italian YouthDepartment of the Presidency of the

Council of Ministers which in additionto the Début Director Prize and thetraining activities for youngprofessionals has also led to thecreation of the Showcase for YoungItalian Film-Makers. Of course thesupport from our founder members isirreplaceable (Rome Council, LazioRegion, Province of Rome, RomeChamber of Commerce, FondazioneMusica per Roma) seeing as in additionto providing financial support (thepublic share of the budgetted incomeamounts to 35%) then also participatein the conception of the festival system.Thus our model of Festival proves to bevery eclectic, relying on the society atlarge and not just the tax payer, inorder to present a highly qualified andvaried offer: the traditional sections,the special events, the Focus dedicatedto the United Kingdom, the project onthe Italian identity to mark the 150thAnniversary of the Italian Unification,the Film Market activity and thesupport for co-productions by youngauthors to which one should add all theexhibitions, concerts and shows whichaccording to the Echoes formula, doesnot absorb resources but relies on thecooperation network.A very committed and sociallyresponsible Festival with its finger oninnovation (wi-fi in every location,digital enhancement, a section on theweb thanks to the collaboration withMymovies). A Festival which, despitethe problems, is set on growing andamong its many features places itsgreatest faith in its Film Market, whichin 2012 will be hosted for the most partby the MAXXI Museum, while ViaVeneto will remain the venue whereoperators will be welcomed. TheFestival management believes inactions for the future, even when timesare tricky, which can be achieved byconcentrating the efforts of all involvedin order to position the Festival to aneven greater extent among the greatinternationally recognised collectivecultural events.

Laconvinzione del management delFestival, resta quella del lavoroindirizzato verso il futuro, anche intempi difficili, serrando i ranghi tratutti, per arrivare a posizionare

ancora di più il Festival tra i grandiavvenimenti collettivi e culturaliinternazionali.

THE SIXTH edition of theInternational Rome Film Festival comesat a very difficult time for the Country’seconomy, a situation that has seriousand tough repercussions on the worldof arts and culture as well. Yet despiteall this the Fondazione Cinema perRoma has tried to come to terms withthe complexity of such an unstablegeneral outlook and without sacrificingquality standards or denying that attimes of crises no window ofopportunity should be shunned, it hasall the same set itself some importantobjectives for the future. In the firstplace the event’s conception hasobviously steered a path that isnecessarily in tune with what is one ofits distinctive features which sets theRoman festival apart from many otherinitiatives of equal importance andprestige: the fact that it is alwaysstriving to be self-financing. This leadsto specific ad hoc projects designed forsponsors who despite the criticaleconomic climate are still prepared toinvest in the event and show theirloyalty to the Festival. And first amongthese is the BNL – BNP PARIBASGROUP, the event’s main partner whohas taken part ever since 2006. Butthis year there are also many co-productions with public-privateinstitutions such as the CentroSperimentale di Cinematografia,Cinecittà-Luce, the MAXXI Foundation,Zètema, the Casa del Cinema, theRome Library Institution to which oneshould add the more specificcollaborations which include theNational Academy of Santa Cecilia, theAzienda Speciale Palaexpo, theAuditorium Conciliazione.And this year a particular mentionsshould also go to the many institutionalprojects being co-produced, such as theone set up with the Italian YouthDepartment of the Presidency of the

Council of Ministers which in additionto the Début Director Prize and thetraining activities for youngprofessionals has also led to thecreation of the Showcase for YoungItalian Film-Makers. Of course thesupport from our founder members isirreplaceable (Rome Council, LazioRegion, Province of Rome, RomeChamber of Commerce, FondazioneMusica per Roma) seeing as in additionto providing financial support (thepublic share of the budgetted incomeamounts to 35%) then also participatein the conception of the festival system.Thus our model of Festival proves to bevery eclectic, relying on the society atlarge and not just the tax payer, inorder to present a highly qualified andvaried offer: the traditional sections,the special events, the Focus dedicatedto the United Kingdom, the project onthe Italian identity to mark the 150thAnniversary of the Italian Unification,the Film Market activity and thesupport for co-productions by youngauthors to which one should add all theexhibitions, concerts and shows whichaccording to the Echoes formula, doesnot absorb resources but relies on thecooperation network.A very committed and sociallyresponsible Festival with its finger oninnovation (wi-fi in every location,digital enhancement, a section on theweb thanks to the collaboration withMymovies). A Festival which, despitethe problems, is set on growing andamong its many features places itsgreatest faith in its Film Market, whichin 2012 will be hosted for the most partby the MAXXI Museum, while ViaVeneto will remain the venue whereoperators will be welcomed. TheFestival management believes inactions for the future, even when timesare tricky, which can be achieved byconcentrating the efforts of all involvedin order to position the Festival to aneven greater extent among the greatinternationally recognised collectivecultural events.
