2. Welcome For the assignment Are you payingattention I visited 6 different stores, thefirst store I using the lab guide forreference, but then dropped it. The guidemade me feel in a closed endenvironment for observation, so I justfocused on observing the store in my ownway and taking the notes. Here is the jest of my study Hope you like my presentation 3. The Stores 4. Walmart Store pictures 5. Outer appearance: Walmart Automatic doors with carts on the side as weenter. Also, movie rental machines and drinksvending machines before the entrance of themain door The sign is simple but big, everyone hereknows its one of the cheapest stores thatcontains nearly all of the everyday usefulproducts Cameras for security 6. Inner appearance:Walmart Blue, white and yellow Has balloons above the clearance items racks Upon entering the front has items related toupcoming holidays (4th July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas) Very high ceiling Much more brighter in the jewelry side Feels warm and cozy when you enter. Cameras for security People are taking a walk in the store, with theircarts, buying all type of things for the week, eventhose that are not on the list. Anyone can spend anhour easily in this store 7. Salespeople: Walmart Salespeopleage: 35-55, both genderswith uniforms Not many salespeople, except in theelectronics area. A family was looking forconstruction paper in the stationarydepartment, although it was in crafts area The store is so big sometimes even thesales persons did not know the exactplace of the items. 8. Products : Walmart Snacks and drinks located in the beginning, ifyou enter the store hungry, you are bound tobuy some unhealthy snacks. Sales items of the week located at theiroriginal location. Items arranged by function, eg.Eatables(frozen, soups, cereal, candy, etc), clothes (baby, boys, girls, men, women) Lots of impulse items for all ages groupslocated at the billing section 9. Customers : Walmart About 70% with family (at least kids), some30% alone almost no one left the store emptyhanded, minimum 2-3 items, maximumcartful long checkout lines and inadequatecustomer service. 10. Frys 11. Frys Store Pictures 12. Frys Electronics is a one-stop shop for electronics needsof almost every sort. Its a massive retail store where shoppers can find a wideassortment PCs, Macs, MP3 players, cellphones, cameras, GPS devices, home theatersystems, appliances and more. Keeps some unadvertised brand names of expensiveitems on their weekly sale, they dont even tell the brandname on phone, so on one can price match the itemsand buy for the same low price from another store. TV, Computers kept in the end of the store after all therelated accessories, so people can see it before andafter buying the product. The salespersons were more interested in people with nokid accompanying them, and it was those customersonly who made their decision quickly, knowing whatthey wanted, looked like they had done their research inadvance. 13. Costco Store Pictures 14. Costco sells many products in bulk such as freshproduce, meat, dairy, seafood, fresh bakedgoods, flowers, clothing, books, software, vacuums, appliances, home electronics, jewelry, art, fine wine, hottubs, and furniture. It also had tiregarage, pharmacy, hearing aidcenter, optometrist, photo processor, and gas station. Membership needed to shop here Does not accept manufacture coupons, only the onethey print monthly It is easy to go overboard at Costco. Lots of temptationpurchases especially if the food sample is present or acoupon is there for an item Employees looked a lot happy, Costco offers itsemployees decent wages/benefits Less items for selection Long lines at checkout No fitting rooms for trying on the clothes 15. Macys Store picture 16. Macys is a mid range department store that specializes inretail of products asclothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, housewares, and beauty care products Macys stores are rated better than average for productquality and layout. The chains clothing and home-dcor selections were good The prices seem reasonable, not very high and nor very low Lots of deals were going on, there was a definite crowd andpeople of all age groups were actually buying Salespersons one of the best, going around talking toeveryone asking if someone needed any help, and stayingthere just for a little time so the customers would not feeluncomfortable. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful The best thing was Macys kids drop off area, drop the kids offand you are given a pager, you can take the pager and shopMacys store all alone for 2 hrs. You will be paged if your childneeds you. 17. JCPenney Store pictures 18. JC Penney offers three prices: (1) "Every Day", (2) "Month LongValue" (theme sales such as back-to-school related productsin August), and (3) "Best Prices" (clearance). They recently changed their policy and got away fromdiscounts, sale and coupons, which I think was a bad move. The bedding department was well stocked with cheaplymade bedspreads and linens. Housewares had very few itemsand the store looked so sparse and empty, like its going out ofbusiness. They no longer publish catalogs. Store was filled with poor quality items, although they werecheap. Not many customers were there, the ones that were there didnot seem to be buying much Salespersons were busy gossiping about other associates People were complaining about lack of items that wereadvertised, but not present in the store 19. Whole foods store pictures 20. Whole food: CustomersJourney They appeal to the customers senses: sight, smell, and taste. Fromthe customers first moment in the store, he is greeted by thebrightly colored display of fresh fruits and vegetables. As thecustomer walks the aisles, he will often have opportunities to tastesamples of certain items on display. As he approaches the check-out line, the smells of the buffet-style, self-serve department mightentice him to grab a bite for lunch in the store. Along the way, thiscustomer will likely encounter several knowledgeable specialistswho will be eager to help him pick the best cheese or the perfectslice of meat When checking out at the cash register, it is Whole Foods attentionto details that sets it apart from the competition. For example, if acustomer is buying a carton of eggs, the cashier will open them tomake sure that none are cracked. S/he will even place tape orrubber bands around the containers for some items to secure themfor their journey to the customers home. It is these small gesturesthat make the customer feel that s/he is getting superior treatmentand perhaps helps to justify the marked-up prices that s/he will pay. 21. Wholefood emphasizes "natural and organicproducts." Food is a little expensive, but neatly arranged andlooked fresh cooking demo and classes were available, somefor free and some for a fee few healthcare magazines for free, kept near thebilling counters happy staff who were ready to help Tons of new healthy eatable products Ingredients, freshness, safety, taste, nutrition, andappearance are some of the key quality metricsthat Whole Foods focuses on 22.
