Closing prayer: P: Thank You, Lord God, for nourishing our souls on this journey of earthly life with the food of everlasting life in Your holy Word. Fortify us to leave here and engage the people in our lives with the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Use us to bring Your peace into the lives of those who need Your love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen.

Hymn 127 (red hymnal): As with Gladness Men of Old

Confession and Absolution: P: Let us go to our loving Father, confident of His forgiveness for Jesus’ sake: Heavenly Father, C: we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have failed to show love, the fruit of Your Holy Spirit, in our thinking, speaking, and acting. We have not loved You completely or our neighbors as ourselves. We have let hatred hide the love You have shown us. We have failed to live as brothers and sisters of Your beloved Son. Our Lord Jesus revealed His person and ministry through His words and actions. In Your great mercy, forgive, renew, and lead us so that we may be revealed as His faith-filled followers to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.” Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: Peace be with you. C: And also with you.

Prayer: P: Father in heaven, from His baptism to His resurrection, Your Son fulfilled the ancient covenant as Your faithful Servant, set apart from all others. Grant that we may place our hope in Him alone throughout our earthly pilgrimage and be set free from the captivity to sin; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Old Testament lesson: Isaiah 42:1-7….Even though He is Lord of all, Jesus humbled Himself to be the servant of all. “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. He will not fail nor be discouraged, till He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Thus says God the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk on it: “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, and will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles, to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house.”

Immanuel High School and other schools. Bless their studies in the new semester. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: These and all other things You would have us ask of You, heavenly Father, grant to us for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen.

Hymn: To Jordan’s River Came Our Lord

5 The Father’s word, the Spirit’s flight

Anointed Christ in glorious sight As God’s own choice, from Adam’s fall To save the world and free us all.

6 Now rise, faint hearts, be resolute;

This man is Christ, our substitute! He was baptized in Jordan’s stream, Proclaimed Redeemer, Lord supreme.

Prayer of the Church

(Minute of silence for individual prayer and meditation)

P: Lord God, when people are in conflict, are driven by hate, or are suffering under brutal rulers, assure them of Your love. Use us to bring word of Your compassion in Jesus, so that they may endure until You send relief. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: Lord Jesus, we pray for all who face this day in sadness or grief, are meeting sudden crisis or are living with long-term trials. Restore joy to them through Your word of promise and through people who care about them. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: Lord of life, we ask Your special care for Irmgard Quade, mother of Ted Quade, who is hospitalized for treatment of a broken hip. Lord, in her weakness be her strength. In uncertainty be her confidence. Bless her with Your presence and grant healing to her body according to Your will. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: O Holy Spirit, work peace between nations, within our communities, and among families, that societies may be ordered for the good of all, and Your kingdom of grace may be extended without persecution. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: Father in heaven, give patience to all who make and administer the laws of our land. Grant them willing ears and calm hearts to make decisions that will benefit all their citizens. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: Gracious Lord, whose kindness knows no end, bring to repentance all who have turned from Your way. Lead them to Your Word that they may hear again the precious gospel of Your Son. Grant us the wisdom to know when to speak and what to say. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

P: Enlivening Spirit, shine Your goodness through us who worship here, so that we may be seen as Jesus’ adopted brothers and sisters. Strengthen us to carry on His work at home, on the job, or in school to the glory of Your holy name. Grant safe travels to our young people returning to

Second lesson: Acts 10:34-38….Unlike us, God is wonderfully impartial. Jesus is the Savior of all. Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 351 (red hymnal): Love Divine, All Love Excelling

Sermon: Matthew 3:13-17

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And

suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

THE BAPTISM CONNECTION

I. Jesus identifies with sinners. II. The Father and Spirit identify with Jesus.

III. We are identified as God’s own.

Offering Offering hymn 131:5 (red hymnal): All glory, Jesus, be to Thee

For this Thy glad epiphany; Whom with the Father we adore
