What sparked your interest in dramatizing Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome?

I fell in love with the story, which is the most important thing. Beyond that, I read a lot of books searching for projects. When I begin to visualize the story in a theatrical context while reading, I know there’s potential. While reading Ethan Frome, I began to see it as a play in my mind so clearly and I imagined the cast exactly as it will be in our production. I had already started writing the play in my head before I finished the novel. As both adapter and director of Ethan Frome, how do you choose which parts of Wharton’s novel to include and exclude in this production?

As with any adaptation, I generally choose a big, gathering idea to which the material clings or falls away. With this source text, which is quite short for a novel, I was able to retain more than I usually can from larger works. The story structure in the book wasn’t good for a play, however, so I came up with a different structure and the events are told in a different order than in the book. Beyond the guiding idea and the new structure, we did several workshops and got the play up on its feet to see what played and what still felt too literary. Some of those sections got reworked – a little less Wharton, a little more me – to make them more theatrical. We also discovered a section that needed to be filled in for character development and since it’s not in the novel, that section is composed

of my original writing. People often think adaptation is just editing, but there is often much invention involved in the transition from page to stage. Generally, the process starts being rather faithful to the novel and gives way to the piece becoming its own thing.

Ethan Frome is set at the turn of the 20th century. Are there parallels between that time period and life today?

This is a story of a marriage gone sour, a husband’s forbidden, impossible love for a woman who is not his wife and a young woman’s yearning for a man she cannot have. It is about passion, lost opportunities, and desires unfulfilled. The book was written 100 years ago but the human struggles explored in it are timeless.

You chose to include the narrator from Wharton’s story in your adaptation. What significance does this character lend to the play?

The story is told in first person by a character (I name him Henry Morton although he is unnamed in the novel) who is a visitor to the town and, therefore, an outsider. Henry sees Ethan at the post office and wonders what happened to leave him so twisted and haunted. Typically, a narrator is objective and remains outside the action of the story, but Henry, as in the novel, is a very active storyteller. He actually makes up quite a bit of Ethan’s story, imagining the details and filling in the blanks from the bits of information he has gathered from people in town. I think this is important because Henry’s act of telling Ethan’s story becomes an act of compassion. Instead of turning away or ridiculing Ethan, Henry imagines a deeply sympathetic story for him. I find that this act of empathy is at the heart of the story and a very moving and important take-away. Humanity would be better off if we were all able to look at others with as much sympathy, generosity and empathy as Henry Morton looks at Ethan Frome.

Locally she has recently appeared in Ghostwritten at the Goodman and Kafka on the Shore at Steppenwolf. ANDREW WHITE (Henry Morton/Artistic Director/Ensemble Member) has appeared in more than thirty Lookingglass productions, most recently The Arabian Nights. He has taught in various

Lookingglass Education and Community programs and residencies, and recently co-founded a new company, Mosaic Experience, which uses an arts-based approach to dialogue about diversity. He is currently writing a new play about the Eastland disaster of 1915. His family in Evanston includes one wife, Shari, and two children, Julia and Asher.

LAURA EASON (Director/Adapter/Ensemble Member) is a long-time ensemble member of Lookingglass where she has served as a writer, director, actor, and, for six years, artistic director. Previous productions at Lookingglass as a writer, co-writer, and/or director include Around the World in 80 Days, In the Eye of the Beholder, 28, They All Fall Down, The Old Curiosity Shop, and Fedra, among others. Current/upcoming productions as a playwright include Sex with Strangers (Steppenwolf, currently running through 5/15/11), The Undeniable Sound of Right Now at Rising Phoenix Repertory, NYC and Mr. Smitten (Humana Festival). (NYC). This past fall Dennis also served as Adjunct Lecturer in Stage Management at his alma mater, Northwestern University.

TESS LAUCHAIRE (Assistant Stage Manager) has been loving her time at Lookingglass. She has most recently assistant stage managed Peter Pan and Lookingglass Alice, as well as serving as run crew for a number of shows here. She has also worked at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, The Raven, the Goodman, Steppenwolf, and the side project.

RACHEL E. KRAFT (Executive Director) is in her sixth season as the Executive Director of the Lookingglass Theatre Company. Her over 20 years of experience in arts management include 12 years as director of development at the Goodman Theatre, in addition to key roles with the Arts and Business Council, Northlight Theatre and the Chicago Dance Coalition. Rachel is a charter board member of the documentary film organization the Kindling Group, a trustee of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Chicago, and serves on the Alumnae Council of the Chicago Foundation for Women. She is a board member of both the League of Chicago Theatres and Theatre Communications Group, the local and national service organizations for theater.

HEIDI STILLMAN (Artistic Director of New Work/Ensemble Member) Most recently at Lookingglass, Heidi co-directed Trust with David Schwimmer and co-wrote/directed Hephaestus with Tony Hernandez at the Goodman. Other Lookingglass writing/directing credits include The Brothers Karamazov, Hard Times (5 Jeff awards, also traveled to The Arden in Philedelphia), and The Master and Margarita (with David Catlin). LAWRENCE E. DiSTASI is currently practicing handstands or working at The Actors Gymnasium Circus and Performing Arts School, where he is Co-Artistic Director. He last appeared on-stage at Lookingglass in Icarus.

CHRISTINE MARY DUNFORD played Gail and Aunt Nicole last spring in Trust, and enjoyed working on the Trust Community Engagement Activities. She is developing The Memory Ensemble, a Lookingglass-Northwestern (CNADC) program that uses improvisation to improve quality of life for people experiencing memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.

RAYMOND FOX recently appeared in Peter Pan at Lookingglass.

JOY GREGORY’s play, previously produced with Lookingglass, The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World will live again this spring at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. She is psyched.

DOUG HARA was seen this winter on the east coast in The Three Penny Opera at the Arden Theatre, and Charlotte’s Web at Two River Theater.

DAVID KERSNAR is currently directing Physical Theatre at Roosevelt University, The Phantom Tollbooth for Lookingglass Young Ensemble and will direct The Last Act of Lilka Kadison for Lookingglass opening this June.

JOHN MUSIAL recently designed scenery for About Face’s Float. Musial is a designer/project manager with Mark Miller Architects.

DAVID SCHWIMMER co-directed and co-wrote Trust at Lookingglass this past spring. The feature film version, which he directed, opens April 1st.

JOEY SLOTNICK can be seen in HBO’s upcoming Too Big To Fail and is currently working on The Atlantic Theatre Company’s world premiere adaptation of The New York Idea at the Lucille Lortell Theatre in New York City.

TRACY WALSH is working in an elementary school and teaches yoga to pregnant women and children with special needs. She also runs an after school drama program at the same school.

TEMPLE WILLIAMS is Executive Vice President and General Manager of 51 Minds, a television production company. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Cyndi Finkle and their daughter Sullivan Clare Williams.

MARY ZIMMERMAN’s new adaptation of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide played at the Goodman Theatre this fall. Also this year: The Arabian Nights at Berkeley Repertory and The Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and revivals of Lucia di Lammermoor and Armida at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.
