After the first World War, Walter

Gropius was among a generation of

young German artists and craftsmen

eager to make a positive statement

to the world. Gropius started the

Bauhaus school and with it, the

Modernist movement.

In sharp contrast to the ornate Gothic

styles prevalent throughout Europe

at the time, Bauhaus adopted a

simplistic approach to design. This

minimalist method eschewed all

decorative trim and ornamentation

that had no functional purpose—

instead using essential geometric

form to communicate style and

the raw materials themselves to

showcase beauty.
