The Loquacious Library A Newsletter from the SHS Library Staff: Susan Myers, Irene Tighe, Myra Webb http://loquaciouslibrary.com February 2012 Collaborative Classes Mr. McAninch gave his students different topics  based on the t heme of imperialism. The library staff worked with the students on how to approach the topics they chose. We helped indiv idual students think about the broad topics and check indexes of the books available in the media center. These types of experiences really help the students work on analysis, evaluation, and other higher level thinking skills. Mr. Stuard sent down posters from his students. The posters were the result of a collaboration where Mrs. Tighe showed the classes how to use DISCUS. Did You Know? Librarians provide guidance for integrating technology into classroom activities? Much of students’ research is completed in a school library under the guidance of a school librarian. Research and media skills are embedded in the S.C. Curriculum Standards and in the Common Core Standards for ELA, social studies, science, and technical subjects. Librarians teach students to locate, select, evaluate, and use information (both print and online) efficiently and ethically. City Heights, an improve group, worked with students from English, drama, and Chinese classes. Social studies students helped others become aware of the history behind different religious  beliefs by creating posters. Authors paid a visit by way of student projects (Mrs. Burke’ s classes). Students created informational reports using cereal boxes. Come by and see what is going on @ the SHS Library! Virtual Reading Any student who loves books is welcome to sign up for the Vikings Read virtual book club. The club is hosted on Edmodo, a safe environment where posts are monitored. Students just need to visit http://edmodo.com and put eqerye as the code. Students do not need an email address to sign up. See Mrs. Myers if you have any questions. 7Reads Thank you for the compliments and kudos about the 7Reads process. Be sure to thank the students for the final six titles as they were the ones who narrowed it down for us. While the committee worked hard, the students are the ones who gave us the final six titles. The students loved having input in their reading  program.
