Variable Reluctance Torque Sensing Enabling flight control feedback and

rotating shaft health measurement

• Two sets of 3 Variable Reluctance (VR) sensors measure ferrous

targets on a spinning shaft (gear teeth, coupling features, etc.)

• Timing between the two sets of sensors used to determine shaft motion

in 5 degrees of freedom

• Able to accurately determine shaft twist to <0.001°, twist measurement

and shaft stiffness calibration used to calculate torque
